Guadalajara, San Clemente Coastal Modern Remodel
This major remodel and addition set out to take full advantage of the incredible view and create a clear connection to both the front and rear yards. The clients really wanted a pool and a home that they could enjoy with their kids and take full advantage of the beautiful climate that Southern California has to offer. The existing front yard was completely given to the street, so privatizing the front yard with new landscaping and a low wall created an opportunity to connect the home to a private front yard. Upon entering the home a large staircase blocked the view through to the ocean so removing that space blocker opened up the view and created a large great room.
Indoor outdoor living was achieved through the usage of large sliding doors which allow that seamless connection to the patio space that overlooks a new pool and view to the ocean. A large garden is rare so a new pool and bocce ball court were integrated to encourage the outdoor active lifestyle that the clients love.
The clients love to travel and wanted display shelving and wall space to display the art they had collected all around the world. A natural material palette gives a warmth and texture to the modern design that creates a feeling that the home is lived in. Though a subtle change from the street, upon entering the front door the home opens up through the layers of space to a new lease on life with this remodel.

Contemporary LEED Platinum certified one story home built in 2010 in coveted sustainable community of Urban Reserve. The home has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms each located on opposite ends of the 1200 square foot well equipped home. The sophisticated GREEN design elements intertwined with the sustainable elements such as the Geo Thermal HVAC system, the polished concrete floors and solar panels. Upon entering the front door from the private courtyard the living area and dining area await, overlooking the spacious custom kitchen. Beautifully designed by Wendy Konradi, there is a separate work area that is tucked behind the house with the refrigerator and washer and dryer area. The master bedroom is down the hallway, complete with barn closing doors and a luscious master bath with Ann Sacks tile work and full floor to ceiling ocean colored frosted glass doors that house the shower and separate water closest. The master bedroom overlooks a private terrace and creek view for coffee in the morning. This home exemplifies simplicity, modern comfort and contemporary design.

THE SETUP
Senior Designer Diana Burton’s client loved her sixties-era home – it just needed some work. The cozy galley kitchen was narrow and mostly closed off from the family room. A pass-through window served as a limited pipeline for treats and chatter. The appliances were failing, too. It was simply time for an overhaul.
Design Objectives:
Remove load bearing wall and open kitchen to the family room
Omit large unused fireplace in family room
Increase work surfaces and overall storage solutions
Dedicated small countertop appliance storage
Seating for 3 or 4 at island
Add pantry storage
Offer solution for lack of mudroom
Upgrade all appliances
THE REMODEL
Design Challenges:
Finding a location to hide structural support for new beam
Reworking awkward configuration of existing walls
Adding a walk-in pantry
Creating mudroom storage
Allowing room for large sectional in family room
Design Solutions:
Add a discreet column by the fridge to hide essential support
Flush out wall by bath to be even with the range wall, where the new walk in pantry exists
Use void space behind new wall for large appliance garage
Create combination walk in pantry/mudroom by adding bench with shoe storage and hooks
Maintain island depth for comfortable seating without infringing on space for the sectional
THE RENEWED SPACE
This cramped, dated kitchen has a new lease on life! Opening it to the family room dramatically transformed the space. Diana’s client now has plenty of storage, a big island for food prep, and an open-concept space that’s perfect for entertaining and hanging out with friends and family.

This first-period farmhouse dates to 1674.
WKD’s experience in historic preservation and antique curation restored this gentleman’s farm into a casual, comfortable, livable home for the next chapter in this couple’s lives.
The project included a new family entrance and mud room, new powder room, and opening up some of the rooms for better circulation. While WKD curated the client’s existing collection of art and antiques, refurbishing where necessary, new furnishings were also added to give the home a new lease on life.
Working with older homes, and historic homes, is one of Wilson Kelsey Design’s specialties.

This ornate period style bathroom has received a new lease of life in this Kew home in Melbourne. The owners were keen to preserve some original features with the lead light windows being a beautiful backdrop as you soak in the bath or enjoy a shower. We also love the texture in the floor & wall tiles which have been laid in place of the original timber floors.
The traditional brass finishes bring a homey luxury, pair well with the shaker style cabinetry. Wall-mounted vanities give more space to the room along with a sleek clean look, double vanity, undermount sinks and low-maintenance engineered stone. The wet room opens up this space featuring a large walk-in shower alongside a freestanding bathtub.
