The existing home, designed and built in the early ’70’s, was contemporary in style. Two lengthy barrel skylights bathed the interior in daylight. Ribbons of windows provided unobstructed river views. JRML was commissioned to redesign the second floor, expand the library, and add a covered balcony with dining and entertainment below. View and outdoor experience were paramount. Local ordinances restricted new construction to the existing patio size. Angling the library wall and edge-mounting the cable rail increased the balcony’s floor area. Oversizing the sliding glass door maintained the river views. Existing patios, steps and new grill station were resurfaced for a matte look. The earthy color palette, Douglas fir rafters, beam and slatted privacy panels blend with the landscape. Motorized screens exclude insects. The roof and balcony, supported on the most minimal column and beam sizes lend the composition an open, streamlined aesthetic.

This long strip close to the road was wet, so we installed a river-run rock walkway with drainage and an embedded tumbled stepping stone paver system. By using multiple materials in long strips, including recycled wood chips along the road, the multiple lengthy layers actually adds more '3-dimensionality' to this design, actually making it feel less close to the road. In addition, the light colored wood chips show road dust less, and contrast nicely with the hemlock. This results in less need to replenish or touch up the barkdust as frequently. 3 shrub form cisten plum in this area are just beginning to leaf out, and will add another "layer" of privacy near & opposite these windows as well.

Removing the two walls to make one great room was a great resale move. Thanks goes to Architect Reece Carter for convincing us to spend the extra money on that! To see that gorgeous Fireclay tile and stunning white cabinets as soon as you walk in the home really pulls you visually into the heart of the home! We completely rebuilt and reconfigured the staircase, (the original was too narrow and steep), rebuilt the floor joists to get rid of the sloping, put in all new energy-efficient wood windows, lay the pine floors and then finish the floors with tung oil. Rusty and I did the floor finishing ourselves- a lengthy, back-breaking weeks-long project. Glad we did it- but might not do that again! :)
