Our client is a High Level VC who hoped to limit time away from his young family. The scope of the project was to design a family-friendly home, while including all of the high style and high-tech amenities and conveniences expected in a Silicon Valley estate. Designing with these requirements in mind, our team created functional spaces for family life while maintaining business requirements in one space. This balance between comfort and professionalism was implemented through masterful layout and design including a private gathering room that can host up to 100 guests, which was intentionally designed to entertain business meetings, lessening the need for travel, and allowing for a more balanced lifestyle. Other features include a Screening Room, Bar and Wine Tasting Area, Private Library and Executive office, and Grand Dining Room.

This addition and extensive interior renovation optimizes front and rear river views, natural light and indoor / outdoor integration. The use of craftsman detailing – adding a front porch – makes this home naturally inviting, functional and extremely livable. The design was challenged due to the waterfront lot restrictions, lot coverage restrictions (car port instead of garage), slope stability challenges and septic restrictions (only 15% of existing footprint was allowed). The rear eating area / sunroom addition was built on pillars to achieve septic clearances. The second storey addition utilized sloped ceilings, which finished at 10 ft. in order to create spacial volume. Open to below areas allow more sunlight in and help achieve square footage requirements. The carport helped meet lot coverage restrictions, but more importantly, helped lessen the environmental impact. Driveways and walkways feature natural stone for water runoff. The Modern Z Sliding Barn Door combines modern with tradition. The simple construction and popular Z design echoes barn doors of the past. The door is built with a smooth panel in the core carefully built into the frame. The rails and stiles are constructed of engineered alder to prevent warping and limit movement in the wood. The Modern Z Barn Door can be used at any location in the home. It is popular in part with transitional or contemporary designs as the smooth panel lessens the distraction of the standard Z Sliding Barn Door. The door itself is made with mortise and tenon joinery, along with engineered alder rails and stiles to ensure the doors longevity. The bottom comes grooved out for the floor guide. This barn door is complementary to any of our barn door hardware. Customization for the barn door comes with the finish color chosen. While a painted and waxed finish gives the door a more modern or contemporary finish that fits well with clean lines and simple decor, a stained finish can add a taste of rustic or vintage to the home. The Twin Peaks Passive House + ADU was designed and built to remain resilient in the face of natural disasters. Fortunately, the same great building strategies and design that provide resilience also provide a home that is incredibly comfortable and healthy while also visually stunning. This home’s journey began with a desire to design and build a house that meets the rigorous standards of Passive House. Before beginning the design/ construction process, the homeowners had already spent countless hours researching ways to minimize their global climate change footprint. As with any Passive House, a large portion of this research was focused on building envelope design and construction. The wall assembly is combination of six inch Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) and 2x6 stick frame construction filled with blown in insulation. The roof assembly is a combination of twelve inch SIPs and 2x12 stick frame construction filled with batt insulation. The pairing of SIPs and traditional stick framing allowed for easy air sealing details and a continuous thermal break between the panels and the wall framing. Beyond the building envelope, a number of other high performance strategies were used in constructing this home and ADU such as: battery storage of solar energy, ground source heat pump technology, Heat Recovery Ventilation, LED lighting, and heat pump water heating technology. In addition to the time and energy spent on reaching Passivhaus Standards, thoughtful design and carefully chosen interior finishes coalesce at the Twin Peaks Passive House + ADU into stunning interiors with modern farmhouse appeal. The result is a graceful combination of innovation, durability, and aesthetics that will last for a century to come. Despite the requirements of adhering to some of the most rigorous environmental standards in construction today, the homeowners chose to certify both their main home and their ADU to Passive House Standards. From a meticulously designed building envelope that tested at 0.62 ACH50, to the extensive solar array/ battery bank combination that allows designated circuits to function, uninterrupted for at least 48 hours, the Twin Peaks Passive House has a long list of high performance features that contributed to the completion of this arduous certification process. The ADU was also designed and built with these high standards in mind. Both homes have the same wall and roof assembly ,an HRV, and a Passive House Certified window and doors package. While the main home includes a ground source heat pump that warms both the radiant floors and domestic hot water tank, the more compact ADU is heated with a mini-split ductless heat pump. The end result is a home and ADU built to last, both of which are a testament to owners’ commitment to lessen their impact on the environment.

The sloping site for this modest, two-bedroom house provides views through an oak savanna to Oregon’s Yamhill Valley and the Coastal Mountain Range. Our clients asked for a simple, modern, comfortable house that took advantage of both close and distant views. It’s long bar-shaped plan allows for views from each space, maximum day-lighting and natural ventilation. Centered in the bar is the great room, which includes the living, dining, and kitchen spaces. To one side is a large deck and a terrace off the other. The material palette is simple: beams, windows, doors, and cabinets are all Douglas Fir and the floors are all either hardwood or slate.
