The unique opportunity and challenge for the Joshua Tree project was to enable the architecture to prioritize views. Set in the valley between Mummy and Camelback mountains, two iconic landforms located in Paradise Valley, Arizona, this lot “has it all” regarding views. The challenge was answered with what we refer to as the desert pavilion. This highly penetrated piece of architecture carefully maintains a one-room deep composition. This allows each space to leverage the majestic mountain views. The material palette is executed in a panelized massing composition. The home, spawned from mid-century modern DNA, opens seamlessly to exterior living spaces providing for the ultimate in indoor/outdoor living. Maximizing space, modifications to windows and moving a doorway gave our clients a baker’s dream kitchen without adding an addition to the home The underutilized sunroom became the designated expansive space with its own pantry for baking. The second island in this space was designed with a 30” tall baking island rather than a standard height counter allowing for perfect leverage and pressure on dough while kneading. Our client wanted the induction cooktop, with a retractable hood, on the island so she could look out to the family room while she cooks. This expansive and beautiful kitchen, newly vaulted ceilings with hemlock beams, and a seating area with a built-in desk created a warm and wonderful space for the family to enjoy.

THE SETUP Client Background: Our clients, a couple who have transitioned into the empty nest phase, have cherished their home for over three decades without undergoing any significant renovations. With a newfound desire to adapt their living space to better suit their current lifestyle, they’ve embarked on a journey to reimagine their kitchen — the heart of their home. Their aspiration is to cultivate a serene, neutral-toned sanctuary on the first floor that seamlessly merges with their family room, ensuring a harmonious and inviting environment. Design Inspiration: The renovation is inspired by the couple’s penchant for soft, calming neutrals, using their cherished family room and the kitchen’s existing tile flooring as the cornerstone for the color scheme. This approach aims to foster a sense of warmth and tranquility throughout. Design Objectives: Harmonize the kitchen with the family room by adopting a soothing, neutral color scheme, ensuring a seamless flow across the first floor. Despite liking the current placement of plumbing and appliances, the homeowners aspire for a more open floor plan to facilitate better movement and interaction. The need to amplify natural light in the kitchen, especially around the sink area, where existing lighting is insufficient. Preserving the half-wall between the kitchen and family room, a feature the homeowners want to keep, while ensuring it complements the new design. THE RENEWED SPACE Design Solutions: By choosing a neutral color palette that complements the existing tile, the design unifies the kitchen with the adjacent spaces. The tile’s grout was cleaned and restored, enhancing the floor’s appearance and integrating it seamlessly with the new kitchen aesthetic. The inclusion of a larger island with seating for two, alongside maintaining a substantial dining table, was achieved by optimizing the spatial layout. This allowed for a sociable yet functional kitchen, accommodating large family gatherings without feeling crowded. Minor adjustments to the kitchen’s layout maintained the preferred locations for plumbing and appliances while introducing an ‘open’ design concept. Strategic modifications, such as angling the pantry wall, improved the flow and accessibility within the space. Replacing the garden window with a broader, standard window significantly increased natural light, transforming the sink area into a bright, welcoming space with enhanced views of the outdoors. The decision to keep the half-wall was ingeniously leveraged to define the dining area while maintaining an open connection to the family room. A hip young family moving from Boston tackled an enormous makeover of an antique colonial revival home in downtown Larchmont. The kitchen area was quite spacious but benefitted from a small bump out for a banquette and additional windows. Navy blue island and tall cabinetry matched to Benjamin Moore’s Van Deusen blue is balanced by crisp white (Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace) cabinetry on the perimeter. The mid-century inspired suspended fireplace adds warmth and style to the kitchen. A tile covered range hood blends the ventilation into the walls. Brushed brass hardware by Lewis Dolan in a contemporary T-bar shape offer clean lines in a warm metallic tone. This residence represents the dynamic collaboration between artist and architect. The architectural experience seeks to unite the tactile warmth of earth and clay with the compositional elegance of craft. Against a textured canvas of linen and limestone, light is leveraged to bring dimension and life to the architecture on every level. Through the radical embrace of nature, guests are greeted by a 16’ tall Australian Brachychiton tree as they enter the double-height entry. The home is organized around a large, outdoor courtyard which creates fluid continuity and access between the indoor and outdoors. From a chandelier of ceramic bells to a locally sourced, custom dining table, every major element has been calibrated to add to timeless composition of the home.

The homeowner was eager to update her dated kitchen into a modern yet functional space for both entertaining and cooking. The DEANE team worked to deliver a sophisticated, industrial vibe, leveraging unique materials and memorable accessories. The kitchen was outfitted with the full suite of SubZero/Wolf appliances and accessories to create a true chef’s kitchen for this family of six. The 48” range with griddle was a necessity, in addition to a convection oven, steam oven, and warming drawer. The decision was made to dedicate a refrigerator column to beverages with an independent ice maker by the beverage bar. The white powder-coated convex hood is accented with polished stainless steel metal strapping. It is flanked by cabinetry columns with integrated LED lighting on either side, which have been recessed into the wall, projecting slightly to feel like professional displays. Satin stainless steel drawer fronts with polished trim for dramatic effect shine on the lower cabinetry on the cooking wall as well as the display and upper cabinetry on the opposite wall, adding a mix of transitional white cabinetry for warmth and variety. The backsplash is a 2 1/2 x 10 1/2 ceramic tile installed in a contemporary ‘stacked’ pattern, balanced by Calacatta quartz countertops. A finishing touch was to replace wood floors with 2×2 ft porcelain tiles that are warmed by radiant heat.

Project Overview ​ In one of the most iconic skyscrapers of Moscow City "Neva Towers", SOIA DESIGN was commissioned to design a refined, modern apartment that would harmonize with the panoramic skyline while remaining deeply personal and livable. The result is a bespoke 3D interior design project where every square meter was crafted with purpose and elegance. The Challenge The client approached us with a stunning high-rise space—but also with a complex brief: Maximize views while ensuring privacy Infuse warmth and comfort into a glass and steel environment Introduce high-end materials and modern finishes without making the space feel cold Optimize layout for both entertaining and everyday living Achieve it all remotely Our Solution ✦ Space Planning with Purpose: We reconfigured the layout to establish a seamless flow between the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Custom-built millwork and integrated storage solutions allowed us to keep the space minimalist without compromising on functionality.​ ✦ Warm Modernism: To contrast the building’s steel-and-glass architecture, we brought in natural stone, matte wood finishes, and warm lighting. Curated textures and neutral tones created a soft yet sophisticated atmosphere.​ ✦ 3D Visualization Precision: Leveraging high-end 3D modeling and photorealistic rendering, we presented the design in full detail—allowing the client to walk through the space virtually, make informed decisions, and see exactly how each element would look and feel.​ ✦ Tailored Detailing: Every aspect was custom—from the furniture selection and lighting scenarios to the precise alignment of veined marble in the bathroom. Farmhouse chic is a delightful balance of design styles that creates a countryside, stress-free, yet contemporary atmosphere. It's much warmer and more uplifting than minimalism. ... Contemporary farmhouse style coordinates clean lines, multiple layers of texture, neutral paint colors and natural finishes. We leveraged the open floor plan to keep this space nice and open while still having defined living areas. The soft tones are consistent throughout the house to help keep the continuity and allow for pops of color or texture to make each room special.
