Here’s a really interesting commercial job for you, which I recently completed in the town of Hinckley, Leicestershire. I was asked to take a look at a Victorian Geometric and Encaustic tiled floor in the historic Queen’s Head pub. This floor is over a century old and although in good condition for its age had suffered significant wear over the years, along with some cracked tiles and slight inherent moisture issues. What the pub landlord requested was a restorative clean to alleviate the aesthetically damaging effect of the wear, and to enhance the natural colours of the stone. I was also asked to seal the floor following the clean to achieve a semi-gloss finish. The first step in the cleaning process was to mix a strong solution of one part Tile Doctor Pro-Clean to four parts clean water. Pro-Clean is a high alkaline cleaner which also contains stripping properties, allowing it to break down old sealer and tackle heavy soil build-up. The solution was applied to the floor and left to dwell for 15 minutes, giving it times to seep into the stone, get underneath the dirt and lift it to the surface. I addressed several paint spots and areas suffering from glue contamination by using Tile Doctor Remove & Go, which is specially formulated to break down paint and adhesives on unpolished natural stone floors, amongst others. The entire floor was then scrubbed using a special floor cleaning pad, and the resulting slurry was vacuumed away using a wet-vac machine. The final issue to deal with was the inherent efflorescence staining. This was treated using Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up, an acid-based product which removes not just efflorescence but also grout haze, mineral deposits, and rust stains. The solution here was one part Grout Clean-Up diluted with four parts water. After completing the clean, I thoroughly rinsed the floor with clean water to remove any trace of cleaning product and dried the floor as much as possible with a wet vacuum, then before leaving for the day i installed a couple of air movers to assist with drying overnight. Upon my return the following day, I checked the floor for any excess moisture before sealing it with our topical, semi-gloss finish sealer, known as Seal & Go Extra which due to its formula is ideal for external or old internal floors where there is unlikely to be damp from membrane. This unique product provides excellent protection, and allows the tiles to breath where floors are suffering from inherent moisture issues. It is suitable for both internal and external use, on Victorian floor tiles, Sandstone, Flagstones, Terracotta, and rough Slate. As you can see from the photo, I was able to fulfil my client’s request to a high standard, bringing the pub’s old yet characterful Victorian tiled floor back to life again. We turned this playroom into a fully functioning multi-person office space that allows customization and flexibility no matter the task. His research is far from square and boring – so we came up with a unique curvilinear countertop design using Maple desktops from Décor Cabinets, which truly add a touch of whimsy to the everyday. Against his wife’s preference, his creative process requires access to many types of material at once, so solutions like bi-fold cabinets and the large aluminum tambour doors allow him to organize loose papers, but shut away the mess when the day is done. Mixing a few different finishes creates enough interest so that staying in the same room for long periods is far from boring, and the acid etch mirror inserts give a frosted glass look without showing any of the mess inside. With this design, the move upstairs was a benefit for everyone.

A classic Seattle craftsman home is reimagined and restored. We cherished the opportunity to help a young couple in Seattle develop a materials, fixtures and lighting package for their beloved home remodel. The master bathroom is layered with a mix of white and black marble hex mosaic floor tile, classic white offset brick pattern subway wall tile, and beautifully crafted wood wainscoting. Kohler's Artifacts plumbing trim collection brings fresh vintage style to the vanity and shower. An easy to care for quartz counter and backsplash adds a bright contrast to the a gorgeous providence blue custom vanity. The powder room which doubles as a guest bathroom is dressed in Pratt and Larson's ceramic mosaic floor tile and paired with a space saving pedestal sink by American Standard. Wall niches lined with white quartz are incorporated into both showers creating a dedicated place to store bathing amenities. The checkboard cork floor in the kitchen adds a FUN pop of personality. Custom mudroom cubbies and a built in eating nook were beautifully crafted and finished in a crisp white paint. Light fixtures by Rejuvenation bathe the room in beautiful period appropriate light. Clever storage hides small appliances and a stand mixer. This project was a labor of love for he homeowners who took an active part in the process and a joy for our team to be involved in! This beautiful contemporary kitchen was designed by Mariah from our Nashua, NH showroom. The design features a full-access slab door cabinet with granite & quartz countertops, an island with a waterfall countertop edge, an induction cooktop with a built-in ceiling vent, and an existing 10ft. window behind the sink. The original kitchen did not use the entire space, which was a main focus during the design process. Pushing the sink against the wall allowed for a bigger island and more space to move around within the kitchen. The homeowners originally wanted concrete countertops, but in the end decided on a more durable granite countertop that looked just like concrete! Special features in this kitchen include two mixer lift cabinets, under-cabinet lighting, a spice rack, double trash, roll out trays and floating shelves above the countertop. Mariah also designed a laundry room cabinetry unit, featuring JSI Designer Cabinetry & a butcher block top, and an entertainment center in this home. Designed by Jen Denham of Reico Kitchen & Bath in White Plains, MD in collaboration with Potomac LLC, this kitchen remodeling project features a transitional style inspired design with Merillat Masterpiece cabinets in the door style Martel in the finish Evercore Rainfall. The kitchen countertops are Cambria Torquay. The kitchen also includes Roma Splendor Keystone Blend tile, Adex Habitat Leaf Glossy tile and 12x24 Nashville Nord Cement tile. “The clients were a joy to work with! They were able to roll with the process during all the issues and delays with Covid and were gracious and kind when everything was finished. They were so full of inspiration and were not afraid of color. They wanted to incorporate their favorite shades of green into each aspect of the kitchen,” said Jen. “We tried to open up the kitchen as much as possible and allow a bit more counter and storage space. A nice feature was being able to take the cabinets up to the ceiling to give more storage. This coffee table has been one of the more unique pieces I had the pleasure of designing and building. The piece of machinery in the center of the table is a compression chamber from a jet engine out of a Bowing 727. The client that commissioned this project wanted a unique way to display the engine. After a few design iterations, we came up with a coffee table where a glass river flows out of the jet engine. The base is made from walnut that is dyed to match some of the other millwork in the house. I reinforced the base with a hidden steel frame to help support the engine's weight. I used one of my favorite design elements to make it look like a bridge; even though the water is flowing over the top of the bridge instead of underneath it, I think the element helps tie the theme together. The top is made from a live edge cottonwood slab, which had some beautiful burls in it. The cottonwood tree was felled here in Colorado and provided by a local arborist, who helped slab the tree and dry the wood. The glass was waterjet cut to follow the grain in the wood and wrap around the shape of the burl. I then carefully inlaid it into the top of the slab. To get it in position at the client's place, I built a custom crate to strap the engine in and then used a mobile engine hoist/crane to place it into the back of the truck. The crate was notched specifically to sit on a dolly so it could be rolled around. I took the crane apart and loaded it into the truck with the table. Once on-site, we reassembled the crane to get it out of the truck and wheeled the engine inside over a makeshift ramp to get over any steps and thresholds. I disassembled the crane, brought it inside, and reassembled it to lift the engine in place onto the base. Then, I added the cottonwood slabs and slid the glass into place. I then reversed the process and took apart the crane to get back outside and into the back of the truck. I felt pretty proud that I pulled off a nicely choreographed bit of engineering to get it into its final resting place.
