Perfect for exercise or entertaining, this compact plunge pool tucks neatly behind the house in this urban Toronto yard. Underwater benches flanking the walk-in steps invite lounging, while a sheer descent waterfall adds drama to the raised ledgerock feature wall. Directly below is a powerful Badu Jet for lap swimming. The owners also use it for paddle practice in a kayak. The natural pond-look of the dark grey Armourcoat interior offers a pleasing contrast to the Wiarton flagstone coping and deck. The back yard patio is the new living room.
Let’s discuss.
If you’ve tried to purchase an outdoor, propane heater, new grill, or even outdoor seating in the past six months, this is not news to you. We’re all doing our best to manage through the pandemic while still enjoying social connections and time with family and friends. The solution that so many of us have adopted is to spend more time outside. There’s a Norwegian saying that says, “there is no bad weather, only bad clothing.” It’s a mantra worth adopting these days. We have a lot of customers who are ready to bundle up and enjoy their back yards as much as they enjoy their living rooms. But these lucky homeowners have had that opportunity for the past six months. Reading any further may make you pretty jealous, but we hope that it inspires you for a future project in your own back yard.

The backyard for this prestigious Toronto home was sloping at the rear, so retaining walls were built to create a level area for the pool and deck. The simple elegant design features full-width entry steps, and at the deep end, an elevated Brazilian Ipe hardwood deck with lounge area. The pool's gray Armorcoat interior is framed by the Indiana limestone coping and deck. An adjoining cabana features a washroom and change room, while the pool equipment is discreetly hidden behind the shrubs at the back. (16 x 36, rectangular)

Even before the pool was installed the backyard was already a gourmet retreat. The premium Delta Heat built-in barbecue kitchen complete with sink, TV and hi-boy serving bar is positioned conveniently next to the pergola lounge area.

A little 'oasis' was created in this compact urban yard as a 'mini pool' for a family with young children. The plunge-pool/spa with black slate interior and integrated rock feature, has a waterfall surrounded by the lush plantings. The deck is natural square-cut flagstone set on a concrete base. A natural cedar hedge and custom cedar side screens provide privacy. With equipment in the garage, insulated plumbing lines and a custom cover allow for year round use. (8 x 13, kidney shape)

Extending the architectural elegance of the house was the primary objective for this suburban Toronto pool. Special care was taken to retain existing mature trees and a small retaining wall was built to help level the sloping yard. The pool's formal lines are established with the 11' radius Roman steps centred across from a stone feature wall with three bronze fleur-de-lys spitter sconces. A dark vinyl liner surrounded by natural flagstone coping and deck completes the look. (13 x 30, rectangular)

This pool patio in architectural stamped concrete with Wiarton stone coping and ledgerock feature walls is the focal point for entertaining for this suburban family. Located on a corner lot, it has thick sound-resistant cedar fencing and a hedge of densely planted cedars to lend privacy and quiet. The raised portion of the pool wall conveniently seats up to 25. (14 x 28, rectangular)

This young suburban family transformed their sloping yard into an entertainment complex. First step was to create two levels; an upper one with lounge chairs, BBQ and outdoor dining area; and a lower one with chaise lounges and a large covered outdoor living room highlighted by a stone feature wall with fireplace and TV. The inspiration for this unique project draws on the clients’ love of Paris and the city’s vibrant romanticism and mix of architectural styles. Our challenge was to elevate builder-grade finishes in a newly-constructed townhome to create an urban retreat with aged patina for this young couple. Soft industrial elements were layered over Old-World inspired details on nearly every surface for maximum impact. We added rustic wood ceilings and industrial beams to create drama, texture, and value throughout.
A Parisian-inspired glass/iron wall divider relieves the open concept floor plan, creating a more intimate seating space. Oversized pendants of steel, blown glass, horsehair and faux horn provide soft illumination while drawing the eye upward to architectural ceiling details. Custom midnight blue built-ins create a library that frames the entry and study. The deep and dramatic color palette of paint and wallpaper that adorns the walls is a vibrant mix of cobalt, citron, teal and smoky lavender. Light pours into the rooms from the large windows, reflects off the oversized acid-wash mirror, and forms dramatic shadows on the walls, setting the mood for this home.

The first challenge was to retain a large weeping cypress tree located at the middle of the yard. The solution was to build a semi-circular stone wall around the tree which would provide a raised structure for the three sheer descent waterfalls and end up as the focal point of the yard. (15 x 18 custom rectangular)

Without the space for a large pool this compact vinyl liner pool was designed with two purposes. In summer it can be used as a refreshing plunge pool, while in spring and fall it can be heated to hot spring temperature and significantly extend the pool season. The three sheer descent waterfalls are both beautiful and practical as they help to soften the sounds of area traffic.
