This project was full outdoor living environment, what some would call a “staycation” backyard. A hybrid pool had been installed the previous year but now the living and entertaining spaces needed to be constructed. Consisting of a deck, two patio spaces with walkways connecting all, a couple retaining walls, fencing, landscaping and a new sliding door. The retaining walls were needed to allow for the patio space around to pool. The patio space was divided into two sections, one the wet zone by the pool and the second being the handout zone. This also allowed for a smaller area of fence with a clean transition. The deck constructed using Azek building products provided the style they wanted without having to worry about maintenance. With the elevation being over 8 feet off the ground, the staircase was given careful consideration. It was put on the side that had the grade in its favor to cut down on the size and to not impede on the usable living areas. Traffic flow and usable space should always be considered when designing your space. Now to get a better view of their beautiful backyard we changed their existing single 3 ft. hinged door for a new 6 ft sliding unit. This type of change does involve some structural modification but well worth it. It gave them the sight line they wanted, allows more natural light and has less impact on the living space as the door now slides. Building an Addition in Morrisville – Enhancing Living Spaces In Morrisville, we undertook a comprehensive project to build an addition to an existing house, transforming it into a more spacious and functional living area. The project involved several key phases to ensure both the aesthetic appeal and structural integrity of the addition. Initial Preparations and Foundation Work Removing Existing Concrete Slab: Our first task was to carefully remove the existing concrete slab to prepare the site for the new addition. Installing New Perimeter Foundation: We then laid down a new perimeter foundation, crucial for supporting the added structure and ensuring its long-term stability. Construction and Structural Enhancements Building New Walls and Roof: Once the foundation was set, we constructed new walls and a roof. This phase was critical in defining the new space and ensuring it was securely integrated with the existing structure. Installing Windows and Doors: New windows and doors were installed, chosen for their quality and ability to blend seamlessly with the existing house design, while providing improved insulation and natural light. Interior Development and Finishing Creating Living Spaces: The interior was designed to include three distinct living areas, an office, a half bathroom, and a laundry area. Each space was carefully planned to maximize functionality and comfort. Electrical Installation: All electrical work was done in compliance with code standards. This included installing recessed lights for a modern and unobtrusive lighting solution that enhances the ambiance of the space. Flooring Installation: We chose a diamond pattern tile flooring for its durability and aesthetic appeal, which was installed with precision across the new addition. Project Completion The project culminated in a beautifully expanded living area that not only added square footage to the existing home but also enhanced its functionality and aesthetic appeal. This home exceeds current energy codes, and all mechanical and electrical systems have been completely replaced. The clients remained in the home for the duration of the reno, so it was completed in two phases. Phase 1 involved gutting the basement, removing all asbestos containing materials (flooring, plaster), and replacing all mechanical and electrical systems, new spray foam insulation, and complete new finishing. The clients lived upstairs while we did the basement, and in the basement while we did the main floor. They left on a vacation while we did the asbestos work. Phase 2 involved a rock retaining wall on the rear of the property that required a lengthy approval process including municipal, fisheries, First Nations, and environmental authorities. The home had a new rear covered deck, garage, new roofline, all new interior and exterior finishing, new mechanical and electrical systems, new insulation and drywall. When Bill and Jackie Fox decided it was time for a 3 Season room, they worked with Todd Jurs at Advance Design Studio to make their back yard dream come true. Situated on an acre lot in Gilberts, the Fox’s wanted to enjoy their yard year round, get away from the mosquitoes, and enhance their home’s living space with an indoor/outdoor space the whole family could enjoy. “Todd and his team at Advance Design Studio did an outstanding job meeting my needs. Todd did an excellent job helping us determine what we needed and how to design the space”, says Bill. The 15’ x 18’ 3 Season’s Room was designed with an open end gable roof, exposing structural open beam cedar rafters and a beautiful tongue and groove Knotty Pine ceiling. The floor is a tongue and groove Douglas Fir, and amenities include a ceiling fan, a wall mounted TV and an outdoor pergola. Adjustable plexi-glass windows can be opened and closed for ease of keeping the space clean, and use in the cooler months. “With this year’s mild seasons, we have actually used our 3 season’s room year round and have really enjoyed it”, reports Bill. “They built us a beautiful 3-season room. Everyone involved was great. Our main builder DJ, was quite a craftsman. Josh our Project Manager was excellent. The final look of the project was outstanding. This commission involved the renovation and conversion of two duplex apartments into one single residence/retreat. The two existing external stairs were removed and replaced by a single internal staircase. This intervention made it possible to create one large outdoor area and maximise the existing view. This New England home has the essence of a traditional home, yet offers a modern appeal. The home renovation and addition involved moving the kitchen to the addition, leaving the resulting space to become a formal dining and living area. The extension over the garage created an expansive open space on the first floor. The large, cleverly designed space seamlessly integrates the kitchen, a family room, and an eating area. A substantial center island made of soapstone slabs has ample space to accommodate prepping for dinner on one side, and the kids doing their homework on the other. The pull-out drawers at the end contain extra refrigerator and freezer space. Additionally, the glass backsplash tile offers a refreshing luminescence to the area. A custom designed informal dining table fills the space adjacent to the center island. Paint colors in keeping with the overall color scheme were given to the children. Their resulting artwork sits above the family computers. Chalkboard paint covers the wall opposite the kitchen area creating a drawing wall for the kids. Around the corner from this, a reclaimed door from the grandmother's home hangs in the opening to the pantry. The 7th Avenue project is a contemporary twist on a mid century modern design. The home is designed for a professional couple that are well traveled and love the Taliesen west style of architecture. Design oriented individuals, the clients had always wanted to design their own home and they took full advantage of that opportunity. A jewel box design, the solution is engineered entirely to fit their aesthetic for living. Worked tightly to budget, the client was closely involved in every step of the process ensuring that the value was delivered where they wanted it.

The comfortable elegance of this French-Country inspired home belies the challenges faced during its conception. The beautiful, wooded site was steeply sloped requiring study of the location, grading, approach, yard and views from and to the rolling Pennsylvania countryside. The client desired an old world look and feel, requiring a sensitive approach to the extensive program. Large, modern spaces could not add bulk to the interior or exterior. Furthermore, it was critical to balance voluminous spaces designed for entertainment with more intimate settings for daily living while maintaining harmonic flow throughout. The result home is wide, approached by a winding drive terminating at a prominent facade embracing the motor court. Stone walls feather grade to the front façade, beginning the masonry theme dressing the structure. A second theme of true Pennsylvania timber-framing is also introduced on the exterior and is subsequently revealed in the formal Great and Dining rooms. Timber-framing adds drama, scales down volume, and adds the warmth of natural hand-wrought materials. The Great Room is literal and figurative center of this master down home, separating casual living areas from the elaborate master suite. The lower level accommodates casual entertaining and an office suite with compelling views. The rear yard, cut from the hillside, is a composition of natural and architectural elements with timber framed porches and terraces accessed from nearly every interior space flowing to a hillside of boulders and waterfalls. The result is a naturally set, livable, truly harmonious, new home radiating old world elegance. This home is powered by a geothermal heating and cooling system and state of the art electronic controls and monitoring systems.

Metzger Design worked along side Bellevue Homes - a local developer/builder of high-end residential projects on this project. A rewarding process from the start - Bellevue Homes provided a clear concept for this 4,000 sf Craftsman style home and retained us to refine the massing and construction details. The home features a spacious great room and kitchen area with a dynamic loft area above, first floor master suite, and a general flow and openness well suited for modern living and entertaining. Additional outdoor living spaces are created with oversized front and rear porches and a cozy courtyard formed within the space between the main structure and carriage house. The Abraham Knowlton House (c. 1725) was nearly demolished to make room for the expansion of a nearby commercial building. Thankfully, this historic home was saved from that fate after surviving a long, drawn out battle. When we began the project, the building was in a lamentable state of disrepair due to long-term neglect. Before we could begin on the restoration and renovation of the house proper, we needed to raise the entire structure in order to repair and fortify the foundation. The design project was substantial, involving the transformation of this historic house into beautiful and yet highly functional condominiums. The final design brought this home back to its original, stately appearance while giving it a new lease on life as a home for multiple families. Winner, 2003 Mary P.
