Blending a modern sensibility with traditional architecture, this garden features a front yard meadow with native grasses (Carex praecracilis) and wildflowers. Poured-in-place concrete pavers in a meandering pattern slow the approach from the sidewalk to the entry. The modest backyard has been maximized for entertaining with outdoor dining and seating areas. Native plants, herbs, and edibles share the back garden beds, and a raised pond brings the garden to life.

There is a mix of high and low all throughout the Novogratzes' home, especially in the kids' rooms. With vast floor space to play, Major has the freedom he needs to explore and exercise his creativity. Inexpensive rugs mean less worrying and more experimenting and learning. The couple also believes in storage that is easy for little ones to navigate, like the red IKEA PS locker cabinet. By giving the kids an easy means of picking up, they are more likely to enjoy tidiness. The first thing people notice about my kitchen is the gorgeous reclaimed beams on the ceiling. Ironically, they were not part of the original plans, but were added to cover up a mistake. When the final plans arrived, the architect had added a cased opening to the breakfast room and a column that would have come down at the end of the kitchen peninsula. I was adamant that the column would ruin the look of the room, so Ridgewater Homes (my builder) worked with me to add a large ceiling beam for support. They were then able to remove the column from the plans. The builder covered the structurally necessary beam with rustic reclaimed wood, then added the smaller beams across the ceiling of the kitchen to make it look planned.

To contrast with the green we added in red window treatments, a toaster oven, and other small red polka dot accessories. A few final touches we made include a retro fridge, retro oven, retro dishwasher, an apron sink, light quartz countertops, a white subway tile backsplash, and retro tile flooring. The kitchen island comes with drawers, cabinets, shelves, a spot for the microwave (to avoid taking up counter space), and a seating area. Dark hardwood floors, an off-white subway tile backsplash, and stainless steel appliances and pendant lighting give contrast to the mostly white-colored room, giving it a bright, clean, and balanced look.
