A kitchen revamp was in order for a local chef and his wife who, manages a local B&B. The foodie duo were tired of their dingy, poorly designed, 1980's style kitchen and desired a bright and open work space where they can kick back and prepare delicious meals for themselves, when they aren't cooking for other people. The space was gutted and reconfigured, switching the sink and stove placement, and situating the refrigerator on the opposite wall, to create a better work triangle. Budget constraints dictated a plan that will be done in phases, and allows more cabinets to be added at a later date, where the open pantry currently lives. A rolling cabinet, with butcher block top, situated to the right of the stove, (unfinished by the cabinet company at the time of the photo shoot), can be pulled into the room to provide a portable island. Budget friendly materials were sourced, including luxury vinyl tile for the floors, that mimics the look of concrete, and laminate counter tops that evoke the look of granite. This family residing on North Euclid in Upland, requested a living room they could actually live in. A space that was not too formal but nodded toward formality in a subtle way. They wanted a space where many people could gather, converse, watch TV and simply relax. The look I created I call “California French Country”. I achieved this by designing the room in layers. First I started with new dark wood floors to match their staircase. Then I had Board and Batten installed to accentuate ceiling height and give the room more structure. Next, the walls were painted above the Board and Batten Mood Indigo by Behr and the ceiling beams white for a clean, classic, crisp, fresh look. I designed custom inverted pleat drapes with a navy blue band to be installed. A new chandelier in loft area was installed to go with the existing entry chandelier from Restoration Hardware. Then it was time to furnish the space according to my new space plan. I used a mix of new and existing pieces, which most were repurposed and refinished. New furnishings included a goose down sofa, wool rug, tufted navy ottoman. Existing pieces I reused were the armoire which I had finished in a cranberry to match loft chaise. A wing back chair , ottoman, cane back chair and client’s entry bench that was made by her father were all reupholstered. I had a custom marble table top fabricated to sit atop 2 antique Chinese meal box holders that the client has been holding on to, which created the perfect entry table. I accessorized the room with red, blue and white accents to give the room that “lived in” feeling. The loft houses a large antique mirror that I found in a local shop, a velvet chaise to lounge and their daughter’s artwork was hung in the loft area to make the space feel like their own little getaway.

Quinn and Paige, residents of this tired 1960’s tri-level home hated their kitchen. As a matter of fact, prior to making plans to renovate the first floor - they considered selling the home, but were reluctant because of its enviable location near the heart of downtown Barrington which was within walking distance to local stores and all their favorite places. So instead they contacted Advance Design Studio after hearing about them from a neighbor, to rescue their tired home and give it new life. The very first plan was to remove the constricting walls surrounding the original kitchen, and open the expansive first floor living room and dining area to the new heart of the space; a stunning state of the art coastal designed kitchen. Exposing attractive beams in the vaulted ceiling created an interesting structural detail that suits the open plan and salutes the original architecture of the home, further emphasizing the height of the new space enjoyed now by the family as a great room. The stage was set for the seaside feel of this kitchen by pairing crisp white painted maple cabinets with Dura Supreme’s one of kind hand weathered finish on the island in soft blue-green finish. But the authentic feeling of being on your favorite beach was supremely achieved by the matching of unique Mt. Claire marble on the island and the specialty Wareham acid washed stone on the perimeter counter tops. Pictures don’t do justice to the feel of this stone under your hand; its water-washed texture reminds instantly of summer vacations collecting rocks softly etched by hundreds of waves. Stainless steel appliances and satin nickel hardware shine brightly against the backdrop of bright white subway tiles accentuated by subtle grey grout lines contributing to the nautical feel of this comfortable kitchen. Seeded glass door cabinetry reminiscent of beach grasses dress up the space just enough, and a proud 6” stacked crown molding extends above 36” wall cabinets into the expanse of the now taller space; balancing this kitchen nicely within its newly integrated home. Features in this kitchen include a built in standard depth refrigerator, pull out spice racks, tall tray dividers and wood super Susan with double pull out trash and recycling. A cutlery divider holds sharp knives, and an angled cabinet was customized to hold a secret USB charging station. The bright white Kohler farm sink is graced by an elegant bridge faucet in brushed nickel. This now airy and spacious kitchen has room for guest and family to congregate around the large island, complete with stools and attractive hidden storage for seldom used entertainment pieces. “I was sold when I saw the drawings. My designer nailed it, down to every last storage idea and coastal detail I envisioned, it was all in there. It was unbelievable how accurate her interpretation was of what was in my head; working with her made my kitchen renovation so easy, it’s as if she literally read my mind”, said Paige enthusiastically. The woman of the house expressed upon completion not only her love for her fantastic new cooking space, but how renovating her kitchen has given new life to the entire home. Talk of moving has been relegated to the recycling bin, and instead the family is discussing plans to renovate the master bath now that they’ve decided to stay for the long term. Friends who visit the home do a double-take as they recognize the new space’s dramatic transformation from original cramped and closed spaces - to the now amazingly fresh open kitchen that has become the center of every gathering and family meal. The kitchen island leads into the family room, where glowing floral lighting call to the gardens outside. Nature inspired artwork by Kaoru Mansour and Joyce Gehl hang on the walls, creating another conversation with the plant life outside.A Calacata Avorio marble island offers a large surface to prepare food, or enjoy breakfast while admiring exterior views. Stacks of produce are at the ready for convenient snacking, with vegan cookbooks close at hand in preparation for larger meals. A custom niche was designed to display a pottery collection, and offers another space for plant life to grow. Golden hues in the marble add warmth. Wooden bar stools neatly tuck into the island, perfect for socializing and conversation while preparing meals. The kitchen was made with natural materials to inspire peace, and encourage a connection between the environment when considering the food being prepared. A custom knife drawer as part of cabinetry made in collaboration with a local artisan, conveniently located near the oven for easy preparation. FSC certified no VOC apple ply was used for the cabinetry. Custom silverware drawers give ample space for a variety of flatware. Fresh fruit available for healthy snacking doubles as colorful decor. Artwork by Karen Sikie provides a permanent bouquet when flowers begin to wilt. The pantry, featuring a large concealed fridge to match the cabinetry. On the left, two freezer drawers sit below the counter, with additional storage for dried goods and spices. Custom cabinets made in collaboration with a local craftsperson are painted in a warm grey to bring out the dove tones in the marble. The counter tops were specified to reach the clients ideal height for food preparation. The kitchen is designed for ease of use and calm, creating a mindful experience for cooking.

Split Level 1970 home of a young and active family of four. The main public spaces in this home were remodeled to create a fresh, clean look. The Jack + Mare demo'd the kitchen and dining room down to studs and removed the wall between the kitchen/dining and living room to create an open concept space with a clean and fresh new kitchen and dining with ample storage. Now the family can all be together and enjoy one another's company even if mom or dad is busy in the kitchen prepping the next meal. The custom white cabinets and the blue accent island (and walls) really give a nice clean and fun feel to the space. The island has a gorgeous local solid slab of wood on top. A local artisan salvaged and milled up the big leaf maple for this project. In fact, the tree was from the University of Portland's campus located right where the client once rode the bus to school when she was a child. So it's an extra special custom piece! (fun fact: there is a bullet lodged in the wood that is visible...we estimate it was shot into the tree 30-35 years ago!) The 'public' spaces were given a brand new waterproof luxury vinyl wide plank tile. With 2 young daughters, a large golden retriever and elderly cat, the durable floor was a must. project scope at quick glance: - demo'd and rebuild kitchen and dining room. - removed wall separating kitchen/dining and living room - removed carpet and installed new flooring in public spaces - removed stair carpet and gave fresh black and white paint - painted all public spaces - new hallway doorknob harware - all new LED lighting (kitchen, dining, living room and hallway) Jason Quigley Photography
