Hewn timber: In the old days, this texture was a result of how the round tree was hewn by broad axe into a square or rectangular timber. This photograph shows reclaimed timber with its original hand hewn patina. A hundred and fifty years have worn and softened the hewing chop marks and given the timber a color and patina that is, in our opinion, impossible to duplicate on new timber. Occasionally we hew new timber, and there's a short video on our website of one of the most talented hewers alive today. © Carolina Timberworks

Encircling a sleek pool, this garden for a growing family offers comfortable spaces in which to play, relax and dine. New raised planters and containers overflow with citrus, herbs and colorful Mediterranean plantings. Synthetic turf provides a soft, inviting play place in a shady area of the yard. A gorgeous rust patina on the panel fencing provides visual contrast to the the concrete walls and bright green climbing plants. Extraordinary greenery defines this ultra-modern landscape build. Edible beds show off bright greens, contrasting with the grey of the concrete walls. Ornamental grasses and stunning rock accents add a pop of earthy brightness.
