Innovation House’s design team worked just as hard hand-selecting finishes for the exterior of the home as they did the interior in order to create a dramatic first impression for guests that would also perform to the standards of a busy family. Innovation House’s courtyard begins at the edge of the home’s grand circular drive. Branching to the right of the main structure, the contrasting stone driveway pavers lead you into an artfully designed garage and courtyard space. The stonework, hardwood garage doors, dark aluminum railings and natural finish porch supports comprise a majority of the space’s hardscape. Innovation House’s design team built two separate garage structures: one two car garage attached to the house and another two car garage opposite the first lending a carriage house feel. Just past an elegant low profile stone dividing wall is expansive green space for family play and relaxation. A combination of colorful in-ground plantings and sculptural container planters evokes a decidedly English garden feel. To add drama and a way to easily find the side doors, Innovation House’s design team used a combination of sleek recessed landscape lights and traditional carriage lights. The continued stone work helps draw visual attention beyond the garages and verdant carpet of grass to a welcoming outdoor kitchen and living area complete with large stone fireplace, gas grill with custom butcher block grill cart, and stone topped food preparation space. This passive solar cottage included energy efficiency and sustainability strategies across all divisions of construction, from the LEED concrete mixes to the custom designed bio-mass wood boiler hydronic heating system. The clients – a forestry consultant and an energy policy advocate – drove the design and construction of the project to be an extremely unique and functional building. Fundamentals of passive solar design and sun-tempering were the basis around which the major project parameters were established. The active space conditioning and domestic hot water is provided by a visible-flame architectural wood boiler, backed up by a bio-diesel boiler. Other features include decorative polished concrete slab floors; locally-sourced hybrid timber frame components; custom sawn northern white cedar beveled siding; oak stair treads sourced from the property; heart pine flooring for Fall River mill timbers; super-insulated assemblies with cellulose and insulated sheathing; and reclaimed, restored lighting and plumbing fixtures.

This shower has a seat that appears to float in air with a hand shower. The custom niche is reachable whether standing or sitting. Tile, stone, quartz and glass! This was a major Master Suite remodel. It has it all; a large walk-in shower, a spa tub with TV, bench seats both in the shower and by the tub, his and hers storage, a walk-in closet, heated floors everywhere and a flood of light. The blanket is a striped natural and pearl linen blanket and at the foot is a flint merino wool washable blanket. The folded throw is a slate alpaca and the thrown throw is our pemaquid cotton and linen day blanket

At our first meeting, my clients’ insisted that whenever possible, the materials selected be renewable, Earth friendly and ideally, locally sourced. But to get to that end, they did not want to sacrifice a beautiful, cohesive design. For flooring, we selected a Teragren strand bamboo that set the tone for the entire space. The soaring ceilings and beams in the main living space were clad entirely in FSC certified VG fir. No or low VOC paint was used throughout the home and the majority of the tile is porcelain with a minimum recycled content of 80%.
