Klopf Architecture, Arterra Landscape Architects and Henry Calvert of Calvert Ventures Designed and built a new warm, modern, Eichler-inspired, open, indoor-outdoor home on a deeper-than-usual San Mateo Highlands property where an original Eichler house had burned to the ground. The owners wanted multi-generational living and larger spaces than the original home offered, but all parties agreed that the house should respect the neighborhood and blend in stylistically with the other Eichlers. At first the Klopf team considered re-using what little was left of the original home and expanding on it. But after discussions with the owner and builder, all parties agreed that the last few remaining elements of the house were not practical to re-use, so Klopf Architecture designed a new home that pushes the Eichler approach in new directions. One disadvantage of Eichler production homes is that the house designs were not optimized for each specific lot. A new custom home offered the team a chance to start over. In this case, a longer house that opens up sideways to the south fit the lot better than the original square-ish house that used to open to the rear (west). Accordingly, the Klopf team designed an L-shaped “bar” house with a large glass wall with large sliding glass doors that faces sideways instead of to the rear like a typical Eichler. This glass wall opens to a pool and landscaped yard designed by Arterra Landscape Architects. Driving by the house, one might assume at first glance it is an Eichler because of the horizontality, the overhanging flat roof eaves, the dark gray vertical siding, and orange solid panel front door, but the house is designed for the 21st Century and is not meant to be a “Likeler.” You won't see any posts and beams in this home. Instead, the ceiling decking is a western red cedar that covers over all the beams. Like Eichlers, this cedar runs continuously from inside to out, enhancing the indoor / outdoor feeling of the house, but unlike Eichlers it conceals a cavity for lighting, wiring, and insulation. Ceilings are higher, rooms are larger and more open, the master bathroom is light-filled and more generous, with a separate tub and shower and a separate toilet compartment, and there is plenty of storage. The garage even easily fits two of today's vehicles with room to spare. A massive 49-foot by 12-foot wall of glass and the continuity of materials from inside to outside enhance the inside-outside living concept, so the owners and their guests can flow freely from house to pool deck to BBQ to pool and back. During construction in the rough framing stage, Klopf thought the front of the house appeared too tall even though the house had looked right in the design renderings (probably because the house is uphill from the street). So Klopf Architecture paid the framer to change the roofline from how we had designed it to be lower along the front, allowing the home to blend in better with the neighborhood. One project goal was for people driving up the street to pass the home without immediately noticing there is an "imposter" on this lot, and making that change was essential to achieve that goal. This 2,606 square foot, 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom Eichler-inspired new house is located in San Mateo in the heart of the Silicon Valley. The angular theme of this first floor master bath begins with the split-face travertine focus wall and continues with the rectangular tub and sinks. To accentuate the organic feeling, we chose granite countertops and light bronze sconces that remind us of bundles of twigs.

We wanted our client's bedroom to feel masculine and cozy, while enhancing the modern architecture of the space. We kept the space feeling clean and relaxing by keeping a neutral palette and adding just a few accents of bold color in the chair and bed pillow. The combination of natural woods and soft textures help make the space feel cozy and inviting, which balances nicely with the metal accents that keep it modern and fresh. Photos by Matthew Williams

The original hall bath had vinyl flooring, a "Big Box" vanity and an acrylic tub. Now, a the walnut vanity and Carrara hexagon floor compliment the rich blue walls and brass fixtures. The dark grey grout enhanced the subway tile in the shower adding much needed interest to the shower.

The Aquatica Lacus 70 x 70 inch white tub is an awesome soaking experience for one or two after a long day at work! We love it! Aquatica is a high-end quality tub that is a perfect enhancement to create a in-home spa experience. Aquatica provided a great customer experience in purchasing and shipping this tub. We used a Navien Model NPEA Series tankless water heater to properly fill the tub with plenty of hot water. The tub holds the heat perfectly. You can custom design the tub surround to your personal style. We used creme marfille tumbled marble tile and backlit the quartz accents and vanity top. The shower features a six-jet Grohe shower. A glass frameless toilet surround was frosted for privacy. Kohler faucets compliment the marble vessel sinks. The Dimplex Nicole fireplace completes the spa ambience! This 1950’s mid century ranch had good bones, but was not all that it could be - especially for a family of four. The entrance, bathrooms and mudroom lacked storage space and felt dark and dingy. The main bathroom was transformed back to its original charm with modern updates by moving the tub underneath the window, adding in a double vanity and a built-in laundry hamper and shelves. Casework used satin nickel hardware, handmade tile, and a custom oak vanity with finger pulls instead of hardware to create a neutral, clean bathroom that is still inviting and relaxing. The entry reflects this natural warmth with a custom built-in bench and subtle marbled wallpaper. The combined laundry, mudroom and boy's bath feature an extremely durable watery blue cement tile and more custom oak built-in pieces. Overall, this renovation created a more functional space with a neutral but warm palette and minimalistic details. Our busy young homeowners were looking to move back to Indianapolis and considered building new, but they fell in love with the great bones of this Coppergate home. The home reflected different times and different lifestyles and had become poorly suited to contemporary living. We worked with Stacy Thompson of Compass Design for the design and finishing touches on this renovation. The makeover included improving the awkwardness of the front entrance into the dining room, lightening up the staircase with new spindles, treads and a brighter color scheme in the hall. New carpet and hardwoods throughout brought an enhanced consistency through the first floor. We were able to take two separate rooms and create one large sunroom with walls of windows and beautiful natural light to abound, with a custom designed fireplace. The downstairs powder received a much-needed makeover incorporating elegant transitional plumbing and lighting fixtures. In addition, we did a complete top-to-bottom makeover of the kitchen, including custom cabinetry, new appliances and plumbing and lighting fixtures. Soft gray tile and modern quartz countertops bring a clean, bright space for this family to enjoy. This delightful home, with its clean spaces and durable surfaces is a textbook example of how to take a solid but dull abode and turn it into a dream home for a young family.

This gracious property in the award-winning Blaine school district - and just off the Southport Corridor - marries an old world European design sensibility with contemporary technologies and unique artisan details. With more than 5,200 square feet, the home has four bedrooms and three bathrooms on the second floor, including a luxurious master suite with a private terrace. The house also boasts a distinct foyer; formal living and dining rooms designed in an open-plan concept; an expansive, eat-in, gourmet kitchen which is open to the first floor great room; lower-level family room; an attached, heated, 2-½ car garage with roof deck; a penthouse den and roof deck; and two additional rooms on the lower level which could be used as bedrooms, home offices or exercise rooms. The home, designed with an extra-wide floorplan, achieved through side yard relief, also has considerable, professionally-landscaped outdoor living spaces. This brick and limestone residence has been designed with family-functional experiences and classically proportioned spaces in mind. Highly-efficient environmental technologies have been integrated into the design and construction and the plan also takes into consideration the incorporation of all types of advanced communications systems. Master bath needed some serious reconfiguring. The huge jacuzzi tub was removed as it was never used. Client wanted more functional space and more closet space. So we expanded the master closet. In addition we updated the vanity space. We reorganized the shower removing the steam, giving us another 2 ft in the shower allowing to add a long niche and bench.

The family living room/great room embodies rustic mountain luxury, defined by reclaimed wood beams, textured wall planks, and indigenous stone details. Warm amber lighting enhances the natural materials, creating a cozy yet elevated atmosphere for gathering and relaxation. Thoughtfully designed, the space reflects the surrounding beauty of Cashiers while feeling like a true mountain retreat. J,Weiland

Though successful in virtually any small space, area size Caucasian tribal rugs are especially effective in bringing a welcome new artistic dimension to elegant bath areas, where their folk art energy can be experienced every day on a direct, personal level. Here, the expressive, nuanced natural color of this very early tribal rug immediately harmonizes with the materials of the space: warm cherry wood and Carrara marble resonate with the carpet’s potent terracotta and sand tones, while the small scale tile detailing recalls the planned, geometric arrangement of the rug’s motifs. Yet, the mesmerizing, faceted allover pattern brings its own vitality that provides a completely divergent and fresh perspective, as well as introducing welcome accents of forest green, sapphire blue and indigo. There is an interesting relationship between the crisply drawn, deconstructed blossoms of the rug and the naturalistically rendered flowers in the upholstery and framed Chinese print, as each reveals something essential about these universal botanical forms in entirely different ways.
