Our clients requested a dramatic, yet classy look for their master and guest bathroom remodels. The clients desperately needed more storage space and wanted to maximize functionality. We were excited to share our ideas and design a timeless look that the clients could enjoy for many years. Our clients wanted the look of marble, without the maintenance of natural stone, in addition to a bold contrasting element within this space. The goal was to use similar materials throughout, but implement various patterns and textures to create a visual flow from one area to the next. To maximize storage and propose a contrasting element, we designed the cabinetry using maple cabinets with an Onyx finish for a classic look. Outback granite countertops were fabricated for the vanities. We installed the same granite on the tub deck and within the shower to create a smooth visual flow. The cabinet finish allowed the natural light from the window to provide colorful dimension to the overall look of the cabinets. The shower is wrapped in breathtaking porcelain slabs intended to look like marble, and provide little to no maintenance. Nestled in a wooded area in the Pacific Northwest, the 1800 sf Passive Cedar Haus was built as a retirement home. The Artisans Group designed the layout of the home, mindful of aging in place, and working to ensure that the home blended in with the surrounding natural beauty. The project meets a complex program, with an unheated sleeping porch for a master bedroom, a screened porch, a 600 sf caretakers apartment/mother in law unit, large wood shop, plus a two car carport. The home seamlessly integrates a floating cedar tongue and groove roof with large sheltering overhangs, clerestory windows, and language of cedar slats for privacy screens and doors inside and out. The warm, natural materials of wood and cork for the interior palette are punctuated by lively accents and stunning fixtures. This ultra energy efficient home relies on extremely high levels of insulation, air-tight detailing and construction, and the implementation of high performance, custom made European windows and doors by Zola Windows. Zola’s ThermoPlus Clad line, which boasts R-11 triple glazing and is thermally broken with a layer of patented German Purenit®, was selected for the project. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the main living area, gives an expansive view of the surrounding Northwest forest. The tops of these windows reveal the interior cedar clad and the up-swept soffits on the home’s exterior, creating a floating ceiling effect. Slatted spruce wood fly-overs break up the vertical areas of the great room and define separate areas that would otherwise feel like an overwhelmingly expansive space. The Kips Bay Show House is a major fundraiser for the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club. The house highlights the best the nation has to offer in interior design. Many challenges had to be overcome in order to make the show house a success. From the delivery of supplies to the official grand opening, Walker Zanger had three weeks to make the bathroom completely functional and presentable. All the materials used in the bathroom design had to be fabricated onsite to fit the bathroom. Walker Zanger was the corporate sponsor for the project, supplied all the stone, tile materials and vanity for the bathroom and was a strategic partner in implementing a seamless design between the master bedroom and bathroom.

Carlsbad Cottage underwent a remarkable transformation under the creative direction of Ginger Rabe Designs. The project encompassed a comprehensive redesign, incorporating various custom elements and meticulous attention to detail from designing, space planning to implementation. Living Room: Custom cabinets were designed and crafted with intricate detailing, including wood selection, grain orientation, and overall design. These cabinets belonged to the GR Studio Cabinet Line. A unique curved niche was introduced, featuring floating shelves, cabinets, custom lighting, and captivating tilework. A handpicked wood beam was integrated to infuse character into the room. Custom lighting, tile, and woodworking contributed to the enhanced ambiance of the living room. Kitchen: The kitchen received special attention, with a custom plastered hood adorned with a carefully selected wood beam that added coastal charm to the space. Marble countertops, fixtures, and hardware were chosen to harmonize with the overall design concept. The combination of materials and designs tied the kitchen's aesthetic together, blending the coastal-inspired feel with modern glamour.

When a world class sailing champion approached us to design a Newport home for his family, with lodging for his sailing crew, we set out to create a clean, light-filled modern home that would integrate with the natural surroundings of the waterfront property, and respect the character of the historic district. Our approach was to make the marine landscape an integral feature throughout the home. One hundred eighty degree views of the ocean from the top floors are the result of the pinwheel massing. The home is designed as an extension of the curvilinear approach to the property through the woods and reflects the gentle undulating waterline of the adjacent saltwater marsh. Floodplain regulations dictated that the primary occupied spaces be located significantly above grade; accordingly, we designed the first and second floors on a stone “plinth” above a walk-out basement with ample storage for sailing equipment. The curved stone base slopes to grade and houses the shallow entry stair, while the same stone clads the interior’s vertical core to the roof, along which the wood, glass and stainless steel stair ascends to the upper level. One critical programmatic requirement was enough sleeping space for the sailing crew, and informal party spaces for the end of race-day gatherings. The private master suite is situated on one side of the public central volume, giving the homeowners views of approaching visitors. A “bedroom bar,” designed to accommodate a full house of guests, emerges from the other side of the central volume, and serves as a backdrop for the infinity pool and the cove beyond. Also essential to the design process was ecological sensitivity and stewardship. The wetlands of the adjacent saltwater marsh were designed to be restored; an extensive geo-thermal heating and cooling system was implemented; low carbon footprint materials and permeable surfaces were used where possible. Native and non-invasive plant species were utilized in the landscape. The abundance of windows and glass railings maximize views of the landscape, and, in deference to the adjacent bird sanctuary, bird-friendly glazing was used throughout.
