Extensive Remodel of Master Bathroom
The was a big and extensive remodel with the removal of a 35 year old drop-in tub, marble steps to drop-in tub and backsplash of marble around tub's marble platform. This remodel consisted of locating the original Rojo Alcante Marble to expand into the space that was originally a platform for the drop-in tub – cleaning and polishing all the marble so that the new and old marbles worked in unison with one another.
By adding new plumbing fixtures and a lighter ‘tint’ of taupe color (Master Bathroom color) this lightened and opened the Master’s rooms for a consistent flow and feel.

2011 NATIONAL NARI COTY SOUTHEAST REGIONAL AWARD
This family of four living in a 1987 brick colonial had to make dramatic changes now that their 85 years old grandmother was about to move in. They needed a mother-in-law suite complete with bathroom facilities to meet her needs. Because they were remodeling anyway, they decided to overhaul the rest of the home to create the house they have always dreamed about, including a grand two-story entry.
Starting in the basement, the homeowner added a home theatre room, added storage and a larger bathroom. Hard wood floors and a new stairway were also added.
The main level boasts the new two-story entry foyer. To its left is the mother-in-law suite with a large front bay window and its own walk-in closet and private bath. The bath is furnished with a walk-in jetted tub and aging-in-place accessories. Other first floor highlights include a music room and gourmet kitchen.
Kitchen amenities the client always wanted were added, including a large center island, extended cabinets, double layered crown molding, exotic granite top and wide board mahogany floors throughout entire first floor.
The entire second floor and stairs going up were reconfigured too. The master bedroom is larger with a new tray ceiling and recess lights. The new walk- in closet is now adjacent to the master bath instead of being across the room. The master bathroom was totally gutted and re-positioned. It includes an enlarged shower with bench and frameless shower door, toilet hidden behind a closet and new whirlpool surround with beautiful travertine tile and long double vanity space.
This new renovation is truly a testament to the possibilities of aging-in-place remodeling strategies. Three generations are now living comfortably in this home.

For the wet room and shower, 1”x3” ceramic tile covers the radiant heated floors. The curb-less shower pan slopes towards a center drain. The curved shower rod and custom-designed curtain gives more space in the shower area for users and caregivers, when needed.

Our clients wished to remodel their master bedroom and bath to accommodate their changing mobility challenges. They expressed the importance of maximizing functionality to allow accessibility in a space that was elegant, refined and felt like home. We crafted a design plan that included converting two smaller bedrooms, a small bath and walk-in closet into a spacious master suite with a wheelchair accessible bathroom and three closets.
Custom, double pocket doors invite you into the 25-foot wide, light-filled bedroom with generous floor space to maneuver around the bed and furniture. Hardwood floors, recessed lighting and window views to the owner’s gardens make this bedroom particularly warm and inviting.
In the bathroom, the 5×7 roll-in shower features natural marble tile with a custom rug pattern. There’s also a new, accessible sink and vanity with plenty of storage. Wider hallways and pocket doors were installed throughout as well as a completely updated seated chairlift that allows access from the garage to the second floor. Altogether, it’s a beautiful space where the homeowners can comfortably live for years to come.

A view of the zero threshold walk-in shower in lieu of a secondary entrance and uncompressed circulation for flexibility in individual uses and abilities at the shower, toilet and vanity area.
Frameless tempered shower glass provides depth and an improved lighting scheme illuminates the master bath for vision and contrast. Ivory honed Travertine tile lines the floor and continues as a 2"x2" mosaic tile at the shower floor to prevent slipping.
The homeowners functional needs were met with three sturdy grab bars to aid with balance within the shower and toilet area. A Kohler Tresham toilet was selected in comfort height, and a Delta Dryden sink faucet for ease of use.
The vanity location with ample countertop surface for dual use contributes to a direct path to the shower and toilet area in the new layout.
Painted maple cabinetry emulates the home's elegant woodwork detailing with beautiful crown molding extending over the vanity mirror.
To reinforce flow, provide low maintenance durability and meet the homeowner's timeless taste, the shower walls and bathroom wainscot are adorned with an oversized ceramic subway tile and classic cap.
Travertine floor tile and curved shower mosaic ceiling compliment the painted cabinet and tranquil wall color. The decorative glass mosaic wainscot banding tile, shower feature wall and accessory corner lends itself to the calming waters of their childhood homes in Puerto Rico, close to the homeowners' hearts.
