when you need more space for a Master bedroom, Master Bath and Master Closet….you add a second story space above your existing three car garage to achieve that objective. They asked us to create a new Master Suite with an elegant Master Bedroom including a fireplace. They requested the Master Bathroom have an oasis spa-like feel with the closet roomy enough to house all of their clothing needs. As you can see there was just enough room for a spacious and well laid out plan and design.

The Master bath shifts the focus from the ceiling to the floor with a modern starburst mosaic, while the large double-sided shower is clad in white marble slabs for a sleek look. Its centrally positioned sculptural soaking tub backs up to a knee wall.

This project encompasses the renovation of two aging metal warehouses located on an acre just North of the 610 loop. The larger warehouse, previously an auto body shop, measures 6000 square feet and will contain a residence, art studio, and garage. A light well puncturing the middle of the main residence brightens the core of the deep building. The over-sized roof opening washes light down three masonry walls that define the light well and divide the public and private realms of the residence. The interior of the light well is conceived as a serene place of reflection while providing ample natural light into the Master Bedroom. Large windows infill the previous garage door openings and are shaded by a generous steel canopy as well as a new evergreen tree court to the west. Adjacent, a 1200 sf building is reconfigured for a guest or visiting artist residence and studio with a shared outdoor patio for entertaining. Photo by Peter Molick, Art by Karin Broker

2013 NKBA MEDIUM BATH
When this young couple purchased their nearly 25-year-old colonial, the master bathroom was the first thing they wanted to change. Drab looking with worn out cabinets and a shower that was too small, it didn’t fit their modern vision for the space.
Working with Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, they came up with a plan to enlarge the bathroom, stealing space from the master bedroom. The new design includes a much larger shower, the addition of a walk-in shower and more. And the results are nothing less than stunning.
A new, frameless glass shower stall is equipped with a steam unit, body sprays, rain shower head, and thermostatic valve and control. A double-sided fireplace overlooks a large whirlpool tub (also visible from the master bedroom).
Modern wall hanger espresso finish vanities are topped with a marble top and his and her tumbled marble vessel sinks. Two tall linen cabinets bookend the vanity for additional storage. A recessed mirror with back lighting effect was also installed.
Large 20” × 20” white marble floor and walls with dark metallic tile were placed on featured walls for added effects. The floors in both the bathroom and closet are heated.
An enlarged doorway from bathroom to walk-in closet offers double French glass doors which are pocketed for better traffic flow. Built-in closet systems are his and hers with matching cherry espresso finish cabinetry covered by obscure glass doors and a touch pad lighting system. The middle island features shoe racks and tie and socks storage.
Clean, streamlined and functional, the homeowners love this award-winning space.

Kowalske Kitchen & Bath designed and remodeled this Delafield master bathroom. The original space had a small oak vanity and a shower insert.
The homeowners wanted a modern farmhouse bathroom to match the rest of their home. They asked for a double vanity and large walk-in shower. They also needed more storage and counter space.
Although the space is nearly all white, there is plenty of visual interest. This bathroom is layered with texture and pattern. For instance, this bathroom features shiplap walls, pretty hexagon tile, and simple matte black fixtures.
Modern Farmhouse Features:
- Winning color palette: shades of black/white & wood tones
- Shiplap walls
- Sliding barn doors, separating the bedroom & toilet room
- Wood-look porcelain tiled floor & shower niche, set in a herringbone pattern
- Matte black finishes (faucets, lighting, hardware & mirrors)
- Classic subway tile
- Chic carrara marble hexagon shower floor tile
- The shower has 2 shower heads & 6 body jets, for a spa-like experience
- The custom vanity has a grooming organizer for hair dryers & curling irons
- The custom linen cabinet holds 3 baskets of laundry. The door panels have caning inserts to allow airflow.

Creating symmetry on either side of the vanities was key. Also giving detail and height to the space by framing around the mirror using the same material as the cabinets.

This master bathroom got a complete transformation from dark to light and bright! We were able to widen and grow the depth of the shower in order to get a shower bench. Not only is this bathroom so playful with so much visual interest with all different tile shapes and patterns.

2013 NARI CAPITAL COTY, FINALIST AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL BATH UNDER $30,000
A colonial home recently built in the suburb of Leesburg had a run of the mill 10’x11’ bathroom connected to the seating room of the master suite.
The clients disliked both the builder grade soaking tub and small shower, in fact, preferring to sacrifice the tub for a much bigger spa-like shower stall. In general, they wanted more space and more storage. To increase the footprint for the remodel, a decision was made to “steal” some space from the seating room.
The new layout features a large, walk-in shower with a frameless glass enclosure. A rain shower, body sprays and bench seating meet all of the homeowners’ desires.
Large linen cabinets surround a large new vanity, touting a granite top, vessel sinks and wall-mounted faucets. Mirrored, embedded medicine cabinets are wrapped in glass tile and illuminated by hanging lights. The opposite wall features floating dressing cabinets which serve as a new make-up area.
Smart use of lighting, such as pendants, sconces, and recess lights has made the space brighter than ever. Designers at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes used large, light color porcelain tiles and enhanced the look with complementary glass tiles on accents walls, niches and other areas.

This bathroom was re-designed to create a separate water closet, large vanity with dual sinks and a custom shower. Glass, porcelain and pebble come together to create a soothing atmosphere for a steam shower after working out. The bench below the window is capped in the same quartz used in the vanity counter top. Body sprays and dual rain-head fixtures create a luxurious two-person shower space. The existing skylight box and window were tiled with glass to create a moisture barrier so that the home owners could take advantage of the additional light. Photographer: Michael Conner
