Inspiration for a rustic kitchen remodel in Sacramento

Our overall design concept for the renovation of this space was to optimize the functional space for a family of five and accentuate the existing window. In the renovation, we eliminated a huge centrally located kitchen island which acted as an obstacle to the feeling of the space and focused on creating an elegant and balanced plan promoting movement, simplicity and precisely executed details. We held strong to having the kitchen cabinets, wherever possible, float off the floor to give the subtle impression of lightness avoiding a bottom heavy look. The cabinets were painted a pale tinted green to reduce the empty effect of light flooding a white kitchen leaving a softness and complementing the gray tiles. To integrate the existing dining room with the kitchen, we simply added some classic dining chairs and a dynamic light fixture, juxtaposing the geometry of the boxy kitchen with organic curves and triangular lights to balance the clean design with an inviting warmth.

This new custom house, completed in late 2012, was designed with an accessory dwelling unit to take advantage of an allowance in the single family zoning code in Seattle. The primary dwelling, 1300 square feet on the upper two stories houses a mother and teenager. The accessory dwelling, 750 square feet, provides a leasable smaller space that can be for a tenant or downsizing in the future. Seattle based RE Store began by completely deconstructing the original home so that its salvaged parts could have a new life in other design applications. The new design for the home is modern with a sustainable theme, incorporating a palette of natural materials. The Paperstone, wood and steel staircase connects the open-plan living, dining areas and kitchen to the upstairs bedrooms and open library. Exterior decks extend the main interior living spaces while sliding glass panels allow the primary bedroom to connect. Stylishly visible from all rooms in the open interior living spaces are two complementary objects, both lit from within, a frosted lexan pantry and a slatted reclaimed fir bathroom, with wood sourced from Windfall Lumber. Throughout the home, finishes are simple and minimal: polished concrete flooring, bright-white walls, and formaldehyde-free sapele and maple cabinetry. The main kitchen is outfitted with Ecotop counters and a custom sapele wood island that has large, handle-free pullout drawers on the cooking side and a built-in wine rack on the other. Maximizing storage, a custom built-in apple plywood bench and open wooden box shelves provide extra space. A model of efficiency, the home maximizes the performance of the envelope of the building. The reclaimed fir car decking wrapped around the exterior from Windfall Lumber, creates the rainscreen siding and is sourced locally from a deconstructed warehouse in Tacoma WA. In addition, access to daylight through high-performance glazing, solar preheat for domestic hot water needs, in-floor radiant heating and a green roof created by the owner adds to the efficiency. This previously small and under-utilized hall bathroom presented several design challenges. Maximizing storage and creating a big feeling with limited square footage was priority. It was also imperative that the end result be bright yet warm, durable and easy to maintain while achieving a sleek contemporary look. The solution was multifold. The fixture layout was rearranged to maximize function. European frameless cabinetry with large drawers was used to maximize storage. A larger medicine cabinet was custom designed and placed on an angle to give maximum storage above the vanity. Warmth was brought into the space with the charcoal wood grain patterned floor tile and Rift White Oak horizontal grain cabinetry. A soft blue grey hue was chosen for the walls and a new 5 lite door, bringing serenity and peace to the space. Updated LED recessed lights bounce off the Porcelonosa wall tile and highlight the subtle stripe detail. The old light bar was replaced with sleek wall sconces providing more flattering light both outward for the user and down to the counter to illuminate items gracing the surface. Special details such as the stone wrapped vanity were achieved through acute intention by the designer and skillful execution by fine local craftsman. Dekton was used as the wrap and is a striking and unexpected detail creating abundant simplicity and modern elegance while providing a durable and easy to maintain surface. The mirror was inset flush with the surrounding Porcelanosa wall tile and its edges align perfectly with the lines of the tile. Wall to wall Euro glass sliding shower doors maximize the spacious feeling and slide seamlessly on a brushed nickel mechanical rail system.
