A block of compressed, dried coir (coconut husk fiber). Coir soaks up 5 times its weight in water, and holds it in the potting mix for plants. Unlike peat moss, coir won't repel water if it dries out. An abundant byproduct of the coconut industry, it's more sustainable than peat. I still add some peat to potting mixes for acid-loving plants like blueberries, but use coir for all other uses. Photo by Steve Masley

Wall cabinets have a flush cap molding along their lower edges and paneled bottoms. Recessed puck lights illuminate the granite counter tops. The lovely tumbled natural stone backsplash is not interrupted by outlets because plug strips were cleverly built in beneath the wall cabinets.

A representation of true traditional kitchen design. This stunning inset kitchen remodel features a mixture of Brookhaven II and Wood-Mode 42 cabinets. A mixture of finishes was used to highlight the island and mantel hood area. The perimeter of the kitchen features a Cottage White finish on the Reston Recessed door style. Cabinets go to the ceiling and are finished off with an existing 12" room crown moulding. Upper wall cabinets have clear glass inserts and cabinet lighting to illuminate fine china. Due to the 11' high cabinets, the design of the kitchen has a detachable and easy to store ladder. Decorative toe kick valance enhances the traditional look of this elegant kitchen. Granite countertops complement the finish and door style selected.

This home was a mixture of traditional and contemporary farmhouse set in a country setting. The entry drive curves around to reveal the front entry porch and front elevation of the house. A mixture of ornamental grasses, natural flowing lines and various shrub plantings all help to create a natural feel. Large planting masses help to keep the garden clean and simple which ties into the contemporary side of the project.

This salvaged kitchen sink was found awhile ago by the client who new she wanted to use it if ever she renovated. Integrated beautifully into the Danby marble countertop and backsplash with new fixtures it is a real joy to clean up.
This kitchen was formerly a dark paneled, cluttered, divided space with little natural light. By eliminating partitions and creating an open floorplan, as well as adding modern windows with traditional detailing, providing lovingly detailed built-ins for the clients extensive collection of beautiful dishes, and lightening up the color palette we were able to create a rather miraculous transformation.

Potting mixes for container gardens need to drain freely, but still retain moisture. My base potting soil mix contains (clockwise from upper left) coarse builder's sand, high-quality organic compost or worm castings, coconut coir, and small lava rock. I supplement this with additional compost, fresh worm castings, and organic soil amendments, with the amounts varying depending on what I'm planting. Photo by Steve Masley
