This comprehensive main floor remodel transformed a dated early-2000s home into a warm, distinctive space tailored for modern family life and effortless entertaining. Located in Northwest Indiana, the home’s renovation included the kitchen, living room, dining-to-sitting room conversion, office, mudroom, and laundry—each space reimagined with layered detail and a cohesive design language.
The project’s primary goal was to move away from builder-grade finishes and create a home full of character and comfort. In the kitchen, we reworked the layout to improve flow—removing a restrictive peninsula, extending the island for added seating, and designing a custom hood and cabinetry plan that worked around existing structural beams. A warmer palette of earth tones and neutrals reflected the clients’ personal style, while upgraded lighting, a statement range, and a larger pantry elevated functionality.
A double-sided fireplace connecting the kitchen and living room was redesigned to feel more intentional, with cohesive materials used on both faces. In the living area, a previously underwhelming wet bar became a standout moment with deep green cabinetry, a wine fridge, and built-in storage—adding both function and sophistication.
Throughout the project, structural limitations and narrow footprints presented design challenges that were met with custom solutions—from a uniquely shaped island to intentional lighting plans that worked around ceiling beams. The final result is a highly personal, connected series of spaces that support both everyday routines and meaningful moments of gathering—infused with warmth, purpose, and a relaxed sense of luxury.

Resort-Style Backyard Oasis: Modern Farmhouse Meets Five-Star Outdoor Living
This extraordinary backyard transformation turns a sprawling wooded property into a private resort that rivals the finest luxury hotels — a complete outdoor living destination where every detail has been considered and every zone invites you to slow down, gather, and stay a while.
The centerpiece is a breathtaking freeform pool of impressive scale, its organic, curvilinear shape designed to feel as though it was carved naturally from the landscape rather than constructed within it. The pool's deep, jewel-toned water — achieved through a rich dark mosaic tile waterline and a dark plaster finish — creates an almost lagoon-like quality that shifts from teal to deep blue depending on the light and angle. In-pool sun shelf loungers sit at the water's edge, allowing guests to lounge half-submerged on warm days, while a separate built-in spa nestled at one end completes the aquatic experience.
The pool's surround is equally impressive. A generous travertine patio wraps the full perimeter of the pool in warm cream and honey tones, providing abundant space for multiple entertainment zones to coexist without ever feeling crowded. A sweeping row of premium chaise lounges with crisp white cushions lines one side of the pool, shaded by a series of elegant teak-framed market umbrellas that bring a Riviera-resort sensibility to the suburban backyard.
The stone hardscape tells a particularly rich material story. Dry-stacked natural stone retaining walls curve generously around the lower elevation of the pool, their warm amber, rust, and gray tones echoing the travertine patio above and connecting the pool structure organically to the sloped terrain. Stone steps with flagstone treads descend gracefully between levels, and large natural boulders are thoughtfully placed throughout the landscaping — giving the entire environment the feeling of a discovered natural water feature rather than a constructed pool.
A dedicated outdoor living room sits on the patio, anchored by a woven-rope lounge chair and a coordinating sofa with generous cream cushions, gathered around a sculptural concrete pedestal side table. The furniture selection — organic, tactile, and resort-caliber — creates a seating area that feels as comfortable and considered as any indoor living room, with the forest canopy serving as a natural ceiling above.
Around the corner, a separate fire pit terrace provides a second distinct outdoor destination. A massive circular stone fire pit — built from the same dry-stacked natural stone as the retaining walls — sits at the center of a gathering space ringed by weathered teak Adirondack-style chairs with white cushions. This zone feels intentionally removed from the pool's energy, offering a quieter, more intimate space for evening gatherings and cooler nights.
The house itself — a stunning modern farmhouse with white board-and-batten siding, exposed timber gable trusses, black-framed windows, and a covered back porch with timber posts — anchors the entire composition. The architecture and the landscape speak the same language: natural materials, clean lines, and an effortless relationship between indoor and outdoor living. A separate carriage house or garage structure in matching architectural style rounds out the property's exterior.

My clients for this project wanted to erase from their newly purchased home the style choices of the previous owners. Eager to make their own impression, we decided to turn the dining room into more of a statement space with elegant wood paneling, a grand carved wooden dining table, and a sense that a feast was about to take place. I thought of it as Modern Medieval! The guest dining chairs are covered in a tapestry-like material of paisley and leopard while the host chairs, bigger and more luxuriously scaled, are covered in a soft olive green leather. Hanging above is a lighting fixture that recalls ancient round candelabras. Below is a rug in camel and gold with an organic pattern of branches and leaves. Wall sconces, a mirrored buffet with iron rings, and custom draperies finish the look. At night during dinner parties, the metallic gold ceiling reflects the chandelier and sconces, giving the room a glamorous, warm glow.

A refined close-up reveals the heart of the living area – a deep-blue tufted sofa by Roche Bobois, radiating timeless elegance and sculptural presence. Carefully curated styling elements, such as decorative throw pillows, tie together the room’s color palette with effortless sophistication.
The modern rug beneath adds texture and balance, echoing the tones of the stone flooring while grounding the composition and letting the furniture take center stage. A framed artwork, newly re-mounted to suit the overall design language, completes the vignette – blending seamlessly into the total look while adding a personal and emotional layer.

This remodel reimagines the main living space into a bright, open-concept environment that blends comfort, functionality, and modern design.
Wide-plank flooring flows throughout, creating continuity and warmth, while expansive windows bring in natural light and enhance the sense of openness. A sleek fireplace feature wall anchors the living area, paired with custom built-ins and floating shelves that add both storage and visual balance.
The kitchen was designed as the centerpiece of the home, featuring clean-lined cabinetry, a large island for gathering, and high-end finishes that elevate everyday use. Thoughtful lighting—from recessed fixtures to statement pendants—adds depth and highlights key areas throughout the space.
The lower level continues the same design language with a spacious layout ideal for entertaining or relaxing. A custom wet bar with open shelving and a tile backsplash creates a dedicated hosting zone, while soft carpeting keeps the space comfortable and inviting.
Finishing touches like updated bathrooms with modern fixtures and clean tilework complete the transformation, tying every space together with a cohesive, refined feel.
The result is a home that feels open, elevated, and built for the way people actually live.

Offering an afternoon of socializing, or an evening of quiet repose in the fading light of sunset, the house in Newport Heights embraces the duality of modern living through the architectural language and spatial relationships of the Mid-Century era that are interpreted into today’s lifestyle and sensibility.

Walking into this reimagined primary bath feels like stepping into a boutique spa. The entire space is wrapped in a soft, barely-there blush-white wall color that reads almost like warm light itself, creating an instantly calming atmosphere that the design then builds upon thoughtfully.
Twin sage blue-gray vanities run along both sides of the room, each finished in a shaker-style painted cabinetry with polished chrome bar pulls and topped with a gorgeous Calacatta-style quartz — the same material flowing seamlessly across countertops and up as a low backsplash. Above each vanity hang individual black rounded-rectangle mirrors with matching chrome picture-light sconces, creating a clean, modern hotel-bath aesthetic that feels crisp without being cold.
The walk-in shower is the undeniable heart of the room — a generous double-entry wet room featuring dual rainfall showerheads, dual handheld wand fixtures, and a natural light source through a privacy glass window that floods the space with soft, diffused daylight. Large format white wall tile set in a simple grid pattern keeps the shower feeling expansive and serene, while large-format Calacatta marble-look porcelain tile on the floor carries the quartz veining language from the vanities underfoot throughout the entire bathroom. A polished chrome heated towel rack mounted on the bathroom wall adds a luxurious, spa-grade detail — warm towels waiting after every shower. A teak wood bath mat on the floor completes the spa atmosphere perfectly.
The Laundry Room
Just steps away, the laundry room received an equally remarkable transformation — one that proves this hardworking space can be just as design-forward as any other room in the house. Deep hunter green painted cabinetry with brushed brass bar pulls commands the room from floor to ceiling, creating a rich, dramatic palette that feels collected and intentional rather than builder-grade.
Upper shaker-style cabinets maximize storage above the machines, while a tall pantry-style column cabinet on the end wall provides floor-to-ceiling concealed storage for supplies. A painted shiplap accent panel between the upper cabinets and the counter is fitted with a row of brass coat hooks — a dual-purpose detail that adds texture and hang space for bags and reusable totes. The counter surface in white quartz sits above the side-by-side front-load washer and dryer, creating a functional folding station. A white square tile backsplash behind the machines adds a clean, easy-care surface that holds its own against the bold green cabinetry. A built-in wood bench with open storage below creates a secondary mudroom function, while a warm-toned live-edge wood floating shelf adds organic contrast. A custom built walnut open bookcase tucked at the room's end provides stylish overflow storage that gives the space personality beyond its utility.

Completed several years ago, this kitchen renovation continues to demonstrate the enduring qualities of a well-balanced design. Rather than following short-lived trends, the project focused on proportion, material contrast, and functional clarity — principles that remain visually relevant over time.
The composition pairs clean white perimeter cabinetry with a darker island, creating a grounded visual hierarchy while preserving a bright, open atmosphere. Subtle material transitions and restrained detailing contribute to a cohesive aesthetic that feels both modern and comfortably lived-in.
Integrated lighting and thoughtful storage planning enhance everyday usability without introducing visual clutter. The overall design language emphasizes simplicity, durability, and timelessness, allowing the space to age gracefully despite shifting design fashions.
This project serves as an example of how disciplined design decisions can result in interiors that remain fresh and appropriate years after completion.
