The Glo A5 triple-pane windows and doors were utilized for their advanced performance capabilities. Year-round comfort is achieved by the thermally-broken aluminum frame, low iron glass, multiple air seals, and argon-filled glazing. Advanced thermal technology was pivotal for the home’s design considering the amount of glazing that is used throughout the home.

Set within a serene natural landscape and abutting the scenic Campbell's Scottish Highlands Golf Course, this striking custom modern home by RWH Architect blends contemporary architecture, functional living, and site-sensitive design into a residence that feels both dramatic and welcoming. Inspired by Scandinavian architectural principles and modern New England design, the home was carefully crafted to balance bold geometric forms with warm natural materials, creating a timeless luxury residence deeply connected to its surroundings. One of the primary design challenges of the project was fitting the home between two existing houses while maintaining a high level of privacy for both interior and exterior living spaces, while also maximizing expansive views of the course. Rather than allowing the surrounding structures to limit the design, RWH Architect carefully positioned and shaped the residence to create a sense of separation, openness, and visual connection where appropriate. Through thoughtful massing and strategic orientation, the home is able to open toward the golf course while shielding key living areas from neighboring properties, resulting in a balance of privacy, light, and uninterrupted views. The architectural composition is defined by two soaring gabled structures connected through a recessed central entry, establishing a bold visual identity while maintaining clean, minimalist lines. A significant challenge in the design process was balancing the large-scale modern forms with a sense of warmth and livability. Through the use of natural wood accents, expansive glazing, and carefully proportioned massing, the home achieves a refined balance between contemporary minimalism and inviting residential comfort. Dark exterior cladding contrasts beautifully against warm materials and the surrounding landscape, allowing the structure to feel sophisticated without appearing cold or overpowering. Another critical design challenge involved maximizing natural light while preserving energy efficiency and maintaining privacy throughout the home. RWH Architect carefully oriented the structure and strategically positioned the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows to capture sweeping golf course and landscape views while maintaining the comfort and privacy of the interior spaces. The result is a home filled with natural light that maintains a strong connection to the outdoors while still providing private, comfortable living environments. Inside, the thoughtfully designed floor plan prioritizes openness, comfort, and flexibility for modern living. The residence was intentionally organized into two distinct architectural zones: a private wing dedicated to the bedrooms and personal retreats, and a public living wing centered around the kitchen, dining, and gathering spaces. This separation creates a natural balance between entertaining and privacy, allowing the home to function seamlessly for both intimate daily living and larger social gatherings. The main living level centers around an expansive open-concept kitchen, dining area, and great room designed to function as the social heart of the home. One challenge within the interior layout was creating a highly open floor plan while still maintaining distinct functional zones and practical circulation. Through careful spatial planning, ceiling volume transitions, and strategic room positioning, the design creates separation without sacrificing openness. Large windows and direct access to the rear outdoor living spaces further reinforce the seamless indoor-outdoor connection, allowing the living spaces to fully embrace the surrounding views of the course and the natural landscape beyond. Rather than existing on a single flat plane, the residence was thoughtfully designed across multiple levels that respond directly to the site’s natural topography. As occupants move through the home, subtle level changes and transitional stair sequences create a dynamic spatial experience that guides movement between the public and private zones of the residence. This layered circulation approach enhances the architectural character of the interior while creating moments of progression, discovery, and connection between spaces. The result is a home that feels immersive and expansive, where movement throughout the residence becomes part of the overall architectural experience itself. The first floor also incorporates flexible private accommodations, including a guest suite with ensuite bathroom and additional secondary bedrooms positioned to create privacy away from the primary gathering spaces. This approach allows the residence to comfortably support multigenerational living, guests, and evolving family needs over time. On the upper level, the luxurious primary suite serves as a private sanctuary complete with dual walk-in closets, a spacious spa-inspired bathroom, and access to a private balcony overlooking the property and adjacent golf course. Dedicated office spaces were intentionally integrated into the design to address the growing demand for functional remote work environments without compromising the home’s residential character. A centrally located laundry room further improves day-to-day convenience and efficiency. Vaulted ceilings, oversized glazing, and carefully framed sightlines enhance the sense of openness and light throughout the upper level. Throughout the home, minimalist detailing and carefully selected materials reinforce the project’s modern architectural identity while preserving warmth and livability. The residence for Mr. Alex and family at Ethul Kotte is a perfect example for this, which is an open book with multiple layers. From the entrance to the rooftop, each space creates a specific impression and reveals a little more about the users, as it has been perfectly captured by the architect. The house is located at the further end of a narrow drive-way, almost hidden from view with its dark façade and greenery, and sits in a compact lot that opens to a marsh at its rear end. With its cladded wall of cement blocks with a unique imprint and the line of bamboo covering the length of the front wall, the boundaries are defined effortlessly while drawing focus to the main entrance. Earthy feeling created at this point heavily dwells on the solidity of the materials and the muted color palette, which is juxtaposed by the lightness of the timber gate, perforated external façade and screen of vines flowing down from the rooftop. Upon entering, the ambiance of the house changes from its somber guarded exterior to a bright and spacious interior that completely opens to its surroundings. The floating staircase that climbs along the dark titanium wall and the adjoining courtyard run through the full height of the building, merging the solids and the voids at all levels. Spatial organization in the house is predominantly in three layers and each section of a floor has a clear demarcation between the public and private spaces. Spaciousness is achieved through the simplicity of the spaces, minimalistic furniture and muted tones that are complemented by the complete openness created by the glass facades covering the full height of the spaces. Another noticeable feature is the landscaping where thick low hedges are broken by thin trees to mimic a rampart that characterizes the intermediate space between the interior and boundary of the site, which is demarcated by the alternating solids and voids of the boundary fence. The ground level creates a warm, welcoming ambiance that is ideal for entertaining guests. From the lines of textures and materials used, to heights and orientations of furniture, each element complements each other to add volume and composure to the space. A peculiar feature is a subtle inspiration from Japanese architecture that is visible in the sharp lines and several decorative features, which enhance the ambiance with splashes of vibrancy created by the simple, yet colorful elements. While the open living-dining space is a subtle fusion between a modern western living space and the Sri Lankan lifestyle that welcomes nature and social interactions, privacy of adjoining spaces such as the kitchen and bedroom is ensured by isolation made pleasant by their private courtyards. Gradually gracing a visitor at the extended landing of the first floor is the calming sight of the full height cross formed by light filtering through crafted gaps on the wall which becomes a feature and an open shrine. This , seamless flows to the rest of the floor with its vibrant, spacious family living room and TV lobby a that connects all these well as the custom-designed bedrooms The ambiance of each room voices the unique needs and tastes of its user, while the private balcony screened from the outside by a perforated aluminum façade and a screen of vines, creates an intimate niche. A significant feature is the glazed walls of the master bedroom, which are only screened by thick canvas shades that open to a mesmerizing sunset and a view of the marsh. This makes one question the concepts of privacy traditionally Sri Lankans, whereas the user appears to be embracing the vulnerability in openness and enjoying the soothing beauty in nature through the same. The second floor is mostly the rooftop garden and bar, which is a multi-functional space ideal for a small gathering. The curtain of creepers covering the full height glass façade separating the bar and open terrace creates a significant change in ambiance by defining the cozy, timber interior of the bar, against the outdoor-, where the monotonous greenery is only broken by a splash of red from the punctured cover of a service staircase running to the upper rooftop level. The uniqueness is in how each space caters for contrast in transition between ambiances spanning from an intimate, mystic bar area ideal for isolation, to a lively social space creates a unique mood compared to the rest of the house. The rooftop thus completes the transition of spaces from open and interactive interior to a mind-palace and a garden that inspires the soul. “I think that my job is to observe people and the world, and not to judge them; I always hope To position myself away from so-called conclusions; I would like to leave everything wide open To all the possibilities in the world.” -Haruki Murakami- Layering is a key feature in this design, which is evident in how the façade filters inwards from the curtain of greenery, permeable panel and the external wall, as well as the spatial structure of the interior. The linear form of the building, where the living spaces completely open-out through the glazed facades at the rear end of each floor merges these family-spaces with the neighborhood, which avoids complete isolation of the family. Thus, the design is inspired by the need for a sense of freedom in the residents, while allowing the house to become a place for escape when desired.

This home features a unique architectural design that emphasizes texture over color. Throughout the interior and exterior of the home, the materials truly shine. Smooth glass, chunky wood, rough stone, and textured concrete are combined to create a neutral palate that has interest and the feeling of movement. Despite such heavy building materials, the architectural design of the home feels much lighter than the traditional rustic mountain home thanks to expansive windows that flood the interior with natural light and create a connection between the inside of the home and out. This connection between the inside and out creates a true feeling of a mountain escape while the laid-back approach to the design creates a relaxing retreat experience. The A5f series of windows with double pane glazing was selected for the project for the clean and modern aesthetic, the durability of all-aluminum frames, and the ease of installation with integrated nail flange. High-performance spacers, low iron glass, larger continuous thermal breaks, and multiple air seals all contribute to better performance than is seen in traditional aluminum windows. This means that larger expanses of glazing provide the feeling of indoor-outdoor integration while also maintaining comfort and protection from the weather year-round.

During our first few meetings, our client had envisioned what drawers would house which items and really wanted the kitchen to accommodate more people whether for a simple meal or for multiple cooks during a celebratory gathering. The original kitchen did not have enough storage and the island did not allow for much seating space. Our client dreamed of a kitchen where she could cook and entertain her family and friends at the same time. An existing wall enclosing the kitchen was removed and another wall was extended to room for a wall of cabinetry while also allowing the space for a bigger island. Upon entering the kitchen, a base cabinet with beveled glass doors showcases the beautiful china that our client has collected throughout the years. The new kitchen is packed with appliances that allow our client to make the best usage of them. A 48” American Range Lenged Series rangetop and a 48” stainless steel hood by Windster form the heart of the kitchen. A stainless steel backsplash allows easy maintenance for our client who uses the kitchen so often. The new wall now starts with a desk/office area, a 30” American Range Legacy Series double wall oven, a 36” French door refrigerator, ice maker, wine refrigerator and beverage center. A mixer stand is located in the base cabinet of the island to save countertop space and a drawer bank allows for baking utensils. A prep sink is part of the island with a single trash to make cooking, prepping and cleaning an ease for multiple cooks. A microwave drawer is also available on the island. Easy access and once again keeping the countertop work space open and free. Storage is available at the seating area for seasonal items. The kitchen finishes were completely switched out as well. The new cabinetry consists of a Cherry species in the Nantucket door style by Crystal Cabinets. Cabinets were finished in a Cinnamon stain with black glazing in a distressed look with cracking and wearing. The surrounding cabinets have a leathered granite and a marble countertop for the island. The three-part crown was inspired by an armoire that has been with the family for a long period of time. Crystal knobs and cup style pulls provide the finishing touches to this beautiful and functional kitchen.
