The 2024 Southern Living Idea House is a new build that fits perfectly into the lush countryside. Designer and architect Kirsten Schoettelkotte’s design was inspired by the historic farmsteads and traditional architectural styles of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. The home has a wide front porch, brick stairway, copper gutters, and a standalone carriage house. The house’s design blended the indoor and outdoor spaces to take full advantage of the surrounding natural environment. “[Nearly] every room in the house has a window, and that was intentional,” said Schoettelkotte. Multiple Marvin products from the Ultimate and Elevate collections were selected for the home. Their durability and customization ability were a perfect fit for the project. The original small 2 bedroom dwelling was deconstructed piece by piece, with every element recycled/re-used. The larger, newly built home + studio uses much less energy than the original. In fact, the home and office combined are net zero (the home’s blower door test came in at Passive House levels, though certification was not procured). The transformed home boasts a better functioning layout, increased square footage, and bold accent colors to boot. The multiple level patios book-end the home’s front and rear facades. The added outdoor living with the nearly 13’ sliding doors allows ample natural light into the home. The transom windows create an increased openness with the floor to ceiling glazing. The larger tilt-turn windows throughout the home provide ventilation and open views for the 3-level contemporary home. In addition, the larger overhangs provide increased passive thermal protection from the scattered sunny days. The conglomeration of exterior materials is diverse and playful with dark stained wood, concrete, natural wood finish, and teal horizontal siding. A fearless selection of a bright orange window brings a bold accent to the street-side composition. These elements combined create a dynamic modern design to the inclusive Portland backdrop.

St. Andrews Project — Primary Bathroom & Spa Retreat This St. Andrews primary bathroom is conceived as a private spa retreat, where material continuity, sculptural forms, and architectural restraint create a sense of understated luxury. The design intentionally avoids visual clutter, allowing the quality of the materials and precision of the detailing to define the space. The room is anchored by a dramatic marble-look stone that extends continuously across the shower enclosure and floor, creating a seamless visual envelope. The expressive veining introduces movement and natural variation, transforming what could otherwise be a minimal white bathroom into a richly layered composition. Carrying the stone through multiple surfaces also gives the room a sense of scale and architectural cohesion. The freestanding bathtub is treated as a sculptural object rather than simply a functional fixture. Its softly curved silhouette and vertically fluted exterior introduce an organic counterpoint to the linear geometry of the surrounding architecture. Positioned directly beneath the large black-framed window, the tub becomes a quiet focal point while taking advantage of abundant natural light and views toward the greenery beyond. Black-framed glass creates another important layer of contrast. The expansive shower enclosure and adjacent glazed opening establish a crisp graphic framework against the pale stone, while black plumbing fixtures and hardware reinforce the same architectural language. This repeated use of black creates visual continuity without overwhelming the light palette. The oversized window is particularly important to the atmosphere of the room. Instead of treating the bathroom as an enclosed, highly private environment, the design establishes a connection to nature, allowing daylight and greenery to become part of the experience. The result is a space that feels bright, open, and restorative. A restrained wooden stool introduces warmth and an organic material note against the stone and glass. Its natural finish prevents the monochromatic palette from feeling overly clinical, while the simple form complements the sculptural bathtub. The overall design is based on material continuity, contrast, and calm geometry. Veined stone provides movement, fluted surfaces provide texture, black metal provides definition, and natural wood introduces warmth. The result is a contemporary luxury bathroom that feels architectural, serene, and highly considered, more like a private wellness retreat than a conventional ensuite.

Wild View Farm includes a new “Forever home” (we deconstructed an existing house with a 90% landfill diversion rate), and enhancements to several working barns. The 80 acre site was an original homestead farm from the 1890’s. Both its buildings and soil had become severely degraded. The owners are working to holistically restore this property and make it a model of modern regenerative farming. They are planting hundreds of trees, re-introducing livestock and working with Dryland Agroecology Research and High Plains Permaculture to restore the soil. The -51 HERS rated home is not just energy-efficient - it’s a model of “Regenerative design”. The deep green house design included multiple challenges – foremost was how to create a Passive Solar design that also took full advantage of the massive views to the West. We solved it with an L shaped building that optimized passive and active solar strategies on the south face, then actively protected the western facade with a giant covered porch and tuned glazing. The home’s leading-edge energy package includes a Ground source heat pump, a large roof-mounted solar PV array, battery back-up, EV chargers, and Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), Energy Star Appliances and windows, a robust foam insulation shell and LED lighting. We also endeavored to craft a modern day interpretation of the farmhouse typology, with a low-slung simple gable-roofed form that would feel like it’s always been there. The exterior material palette of limestone, cementitious stucco and heavy timber gives it a rich Colorado Modern Farmhouse feel. The home is full of custom details like walls of vaulted glass to capture the sweeping mountain views, an AI Smart Home control system, a sleeping loft for kids and guests, a hard-working Butler’s Pantry, a gourmet outdoor kitchen, a pool & spa, a cozy office nook for reading, and a lovely built-in bench for morning coffee. To do this, the surfaces featured are walnut floors, walnut grain matched cabinets, walnut banding and casework along with other wood accents such as live edge countertops, dining table and benches. To further play with an organic feel, thickened edge Michelangelo Quartzite Countertops are at home in the kitchen and baths. This home was created to entertain a large family while providing ample storage for toys and recreational vehicles. Between the two oversized garages, one with an upper game room, the generous riverbank laws, multiple patios, the outdoor kitchen pavilion, and the “river” bath, this home is both private and welcoming to family and friends…a true entertaining retreat.

This project features cabinet designs for the kitchen, master bathroom, two additional bathrooms and a laundry room, created by Nancy Knickerbocker of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Southern Pines, NC with all cabinets and only cabinets supplied by Reico Kitchen & Bath on this project. The kitchen design features custom frameless cabinets supplied by Reico in a combination of painted finishes in grey (perimeter) and blue spruce (island) with dovetail wood drawer cores and soft close doors and drawers. The master bathroom design features Ultracraft Cabinetry in the Avon door style in Maple with a Sherwin Williams SW7015 Repose Gray painted finish, with dovetail wood drawer cores and soft action guides. The bathroom design featuring a mirrored door vanity cabinet is the Ultracraft Rockford door style in Maple with a Melted Brie Nickel Linen finish, with dovetail wood drawer cores and soft action guides. By removing the wall between the kitchen & dining room, as well as the walls of the dining room, which created a hallway, provided the large space to expand the kitchen into. Also, by taking the soffits out, allowed us to take the cabinetry to the ceiling, which provided additional cabinet storage, as well as "visual height" to the space. The homeowner brought incredibly unique and special elements that she wanted incorporated into the overall design of the space, such as two antique French carved wood panels, an antique "Arms of France" fireback, as well as the 60" Round dining table, which was custom modified to the exact height needed for the top to rest on the island countertop. This warm and inviting space can comfortably seat 8, in addition to their formal dining room. Another focal point of the kitchen space came in the form of the custom hutch that was created from matching the island cabinetry, as well as the cherry base cabinets, with the wood countertop. The "X" mullion doors flanking the open cookbook storage space and plate rack, show off its contents with interior LED tape lights. The base of the hutch also conceals two Thermador refrigerator drawers, which are easily accessed as family and friends come in from the pool, though the new sliding glass doors that were installed where a large window was previously. All of the unique, existing, new, and custom elements came together better than we had even hoped; creating a warm and inviting space that feels like it has always been a part of this beautiful home.

A vaulted screen porch overlooking Lake Hartwell on the Georgia, South Carolina state line. We have solid cedar posts and trusses. Between the posts we used screen 'windows' called Eze Breeze. These are quadruple hung windows with plastic glazing that can be opened in multiple configurations. The fireplace is stacked stone with a reclaimed rough sawn cedar timber mantle. The slate flooring compliments the slate backsplash in the kitchen and there's room for a seating arrangement and an eating area.
