Earthy and zen, this powder room utilizes texture and detail to create a moody escape. The initial inspiration for this space came from an old wood carving that Audrey Sato Design Studio sourced for the custom vanity. The textural tile, lava stone countertop, and copper vessel sink were then selected to complement the carving.

The front door to this historic Bernard Maybeck craftsman style home was already planted with Boston Ivy but lacked interest. The narrow bed was planted with Peruvian lily, Chinese fountain grass, Biokova geranium and white yarrow. Cotoneaster spills over the wall and glows with red berries in winter, complementing the smoldering winter foliage of the climbing ivy.

Although the front yard didn't allow much space for planting, a layered look was created by using Snow In Summer (Cerastium tomentosum) in the foreground, a mid-ground of Pink Breath of Heaven (Coleonema), and Chinese Fringe Flower (Loropetalum chinense 'Hine's Purple') surrounding Forest Pansy Canadian Redbud (Cercis). A vine arbor was built to conceal trash cans while providing convenient access.

For the interiors, Matthew wanted to create a look appropriate for a remote Southern getaway, but nothing too sleepy. He started with a traditional foundation composed of classic American and English wood antiques, mellowed Oriental rugs, grids of framed prints, and Colonial portraits crowned with museum-style brass picture lamps. Lovely plant combination of Loropetalum and Coleonema (Breath of Heaven). These are two great plant combinations that don't need a lot of water and provide nice leaf color and textures throughout the seasons. Located in a Sleepy Hollow/San Anselmo garden in northern California. Other plants n this garden include Phormiums, native Penstemon, Snow in Summer, Lambs Ears and other colorful plants that create a beautiful low-water tapestry of groupings.
