two years after the first posts, these next 4 pics show the slow progress to fill in the woodland shade garden. This garden space is sometimes called the dynamic edge, where low light get in below an otherwise tight canopy. 50 year old Spruce trees provide the dense overhead shade.
This part of the shade bed is the oldest, and has Vinca ground cover and liriope to slow the flow of water from the neighbor's drive. This has proven to be successful. Azaleas are slow to grow, but are filling in behind. A native Spicebush is added in here too.

One of Jamaica Cottage Shops most popular designs. Tiny house at 416 sq.ft, includes a loft. Hand made in Vermont, from native rough sawn hemlock and pine lumber, the prefab cottage kit includes all fastening hardware, metal roofing, and step-by-step plans necessary for assembly. Rugged post and beam techniques passed down through the centuries are at the foundation of this sturdy, picturesque retreat reminiscent of old New England. Have your own “Vermont cottage” in your backyard.

This 3200 square foot home features a maintenance free exterior of LP Smartside, corrugated aluminum roofing, and native prairie landscaping. The design of the structure is intended to mimic the architectural lines of classic farm buildings. The outdoor living areas are as important to this home as the interior spaces; covered and exposed porches, field stone patios and an enclosed screen porch all offer expansive views of the surrounding meadow and tree line.
The home’s interior combines rustic timbers and soaring spaces which would have traditionally been reserved for the barn and outbuildings, with classic finishes customarily found in the family homestead. Walls of windows and cathedral ceilings invite the outdoors in. Locally sourced reclaimed posts and beams, wide plank white oak flooring and a Door County fieldstone fireplace juxtapose with classic white cabinetry and millwork, tongue and groove wainscoting and a color palate of softened paint hues, tiles and fabrics to create a completely unique Door County homestead.

This serpentine wall design is based off of Thomas Jefferson's walls at the University of Virginia. The curve of the walls gives it strength to hold the soil behind it, like an arch.

Welcome to the essential refined mountain rustic home: warm, homey, and sturdy. The house’s structure is genuine heavy timber framing, skillfully constructed with mortise and tenon joinery. Distressed beams and posts have been reclaimed from old American barns to enjoy a second life as they define varied, inviting spaces. Traditional carpentry is at its best in the great room’s exquisitely crafted wood trusses. Rugged Lodge is a retreat that’s hard to return from.

This back yard in Mission Viejo got an earth friendly make over using soft set flagstone, California native plants and several rain tanks. The homeowners now have more space to entertain and enjoy life. All the materials were also locally sourced and hand selected to suit the clients needs and budget. Gravel defines the picnic patio and separates it from the outdoor kitchen workspace and walkway between the home and landscape. Sand colored gravel evokes the nearby beach and synchronizes with the natural wood of the fence and clean lines of the home. Photo: Lesly Hall Photography
