Shade gardens don't have to be boring, in fact they can be some of the most surprising and dynamic gardens to design. Layered plantings like this one create lots of texture and interest-even when the plants aren't in bloom! Even better, this garden uses native plantings and will not need supplemental water once established.

Wild Lupine / Lupinus perennis

This Texas Hill Country home has a rustic, slightly mediterranean feel. Our clients chose materials and colors which reflect the land around their home, and decided to pursue xeriscaping with native Texas plants.

Mulching dryland plantings with granite provides more drainage than traditional hardwood mulch. Plants like agave and stemodia prefer to dry out between waterings.

Leuders limestone walls help to create this multi-level space, looking over a neighborhood lake, while you sit around this custom made fire pit. The firepit is a single block of Leuders limestone cut and carved to create a very unique piece. Chunk lava rock finishes it off right.

I did a complete new planting design for this project which is a single family home in the suburbs of Towson. The garden is 1/3 acre in size. Most of the existing plants, including many non-native ground covers, like English Ivy, shrubs, and trees, were removed in order to bring in the sunlight for pollinators and remove interference with the power lines. I designed and installed a mostly native plant garden that is designed to be beautiful to view with many flowers blooming all season long and varied textures and movement with ornamental grasses and provides habitat and food for pollinators, like butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, and for songbirds. Nearly 100 trees, nearly 100 shrubs, and 1,000 perennials and grasses were installed. I continue to oversee the maintenance of this garden. Landscape design and photo by Roland Oehme

This modern landscape w warm inviting touched brings the owners personal touches into play. We used Mediterranean plantings w majestic fruitless olive trees, plenty of native grasses, succulents and perennial color to surround this warm modern home. Many creative touches including a driveway turnaround parking area with synthetic lawn and concrete strips, subtle stone water features, steel and wood trellises, inset tile paving and imported antique wood doors were selected and placed in this landscape.

Rock outcroppings make a striking background for new lounge areas in this compact Los Angeles hillside garden. Working with the attributes of the site, we added native plants to drape over the stone, and converted hollowed stone planters into a firepit and water feature. Cedar Elm The Cedar Elm, Ulmus crassifolia, is one of the most common and widespread native trees in Texas. It grows all over the eastern half of the state, with the exception of the most southern parts. We love Cedar Elms because they are a tough, heat-tolerant shade tree that can weather a drought. This Bryn Mawr landscape was transformed from a lawn to a half-acre meadow wrapping around the home. The dynamic combination of grasses, native wildflowers, trees and shrubs changes appearance throughout the season while providing a lush year-round habitat for wildlife. Unseen to onlookers, the meadow offers meandering exploratory pathways that immerse you in nature’s sounds, movement and smells, up close. These grassy channels also provide children fun access routes from one playing area to the next, hidden from the grown-ups, free to roam and explore. Dense perennial plantings enveloping the formerly underused patio create an intimate and immersive gathering space; beckoning its inhabitants with a daily dose of drama and beauty.

This native plant style garden transitions the home off of the formal lawn and terrace to a spectacular and architectural native plant garden. Also designed as a Butterfly or Pollinator garden, perennials mix with flowering shrubs , grasses, Joe Pye Weed and Blazing Star varieties to create natural habitat in an urban location.
