Inspiration for a small 1960s light wood floor kitchen/dining room combo remodel in Orange County with gray walls and no fireplace

Here's one of our most recent projects that was completed in 2011. This client had just finished a major remodel of their house in 2008 and were about to enjoy Christmas in their new home. At the time, Seattle was buried under several inches of snow (a rarity for us) and the entire region was paralyzed for a few days waiting for the thaw. Our client decided to take advantage of this opportunity and was in his driveway sledding when a neighbor rushed down the drive yelling that his house was on fire. Unfortunately, the house was already engulfed in flames. Equally unfortunate was the snowstorm and the delay it caused the fire department getting to the site. Maintaining the existing shell, we reworked the interior room arrangement to create classic great room house with a contemporary twist. Both levels of the home were opened up to take advantage of the waterfront views and flood the interiors with natural light. On the lower level, rearrangement of the walls resulted in a tripling of the size of the family room while creating an additional sitting/game room. The upper level was arranged with living spaces bookended by the Master Bedroom at one end the kitchen at the other. The open Great Room and wrap around deck create a relaxed and sophisticated living and entertainment space that is accentuated by a high level of trim and tile detail on the interior and by custom metal railings and light fixtures on the exterior.

The proposal analyzes the site as a series of existing flows or “routes” across the landscape. The negotiation of both constructed and natural systems establishes the logic of the site plan and the orientation and organization of the new home. Conceptually, the project becomes a highly choreographed knot at the center of these routes, drawing strands in, engaging them with others, and propelling them back out again. The project’s intent is to capture and harness the physical and ephemeral sense of these latent natural movements as a way to promote in the architecture the wanderlust the surrounding landscape inspires. At heart, the client’s initial family agenda--a home as antidote to the city and basecamp for exploration--establishes the ethos and design objectives of the work. Photography - Bruce Damonte

This fun family room is the result of a great Client-Designer collaboration. This new house was a builder spec house, and the Client had negotiated to have one built in included in their purchase price. She had decided to have bookcases built to the left and right of the shallow fireplace. Instead, we had the "free" built in constructed in the Living Room (take a look at the photo of the LR.) The shallow stone work would have been lost in the shadows of the bookcases, and the room could have felt too heavy/serious. We were both delighted with our choice!

The renovated guest bathroom features an apron bathtub with custom shower doors, subway tile walls in "Ombre white" and a star pattern cement tile on the floors, matching the shampoo niche. A navy blue vanity with brass fixtures completes the unique and modern look.

Cerused white oak paneling adorns the walls in this cozy library that is centered around carved marble fireplace surround and dramatic art deco scones, negotiating the need for extraneous art. The library overlooks the city and the clients wrap around terrace that is custom landscaped in beautiful boxwoods and limestone.
