Photography by Ken Wyner 2101 Connecticut Avenue (c.1928), an 8-story brick and limestone Beaux Arts style building with spacious apartments, is said to have been “the finest apartment house to appear in Washington between the two World Wars.” (James M. Goode, Best Addresses, 1988.) As advertised for rent in 1928, the apartments were designed “to incorporate many details that would aid the residents in establishing a home atmosphere, one possessing charm and dignity usually found only in a private house… the character and tenancy (being) assured through careful selection of guests.” Home to Senators, Ambassadors, a Vice President and a Supreme Court Justice as well as numerous Washington socialites, the building still stands as one of the undisputed “best addresses” in Washington, DC.) So well laid-out was this gracious 3,000 sf apartment that the basic floor plan remains unchanged from the original architect’s 1927 design. The organizing feature was, and continues to be, the grand “gallery” space in the center of the unit. Every room in the apartment can be accessed via the gallery, thus preserving it as the centerpiece of the “charm and dignity” which the original design intended. Programmatic modifications consisted of the addition of a small powder room off of the foyer, and the conversion of a corner “sun room” into a room for meditation and study. The apartment received a thorough updating of all systems, services and finishes, including a new kitchen and new bathrooms, several new built-in cabinetry units, and the consolidation of numerous small closets and passageways into more accessible and efficient storage spaces.

From the long linear rear yard and the overall pie shape lot, the restrictive setbacks & fuel modification zone requirements, to the numerous design features desired by the Clients, this design layout proved to be intriguing and fun. Some of the main design features includes: an infinity edge and perimeter overflow pool, an infinity edge spa, large baja shelf, fire-pit seating patio, lounge seating patio, large putting green, covered seating area and a BBQ/bar gathering area, just to name a few of the numerous features. Also included in the design is a full renovation of the front and side yards which all blended with the rear into one cohesive exquisite environment

You could think of this interior door model as representing the two Pillars of Hercules, a source of many romantic tales in Greek and Roman mythology, and a symbol of strength. Depending on which version of the story you like best, the hero narrowed, widened, or created (by using his superhuman strength as he smashed through the obstructing mountain) the Strait of Gibraltar, linking the Mediterranean sea to the Atlantic Ocean, and the resulting two promontories on either side have been called - well, you know - ever since. The image has inspired numerous designs, including the coat of arms of Spain (you can still admire the two columns, originally the impressa of Charles I (the Holy Roman emperor), on the wall in Seville's city hall. According to some chroniclers, the dollar sign may have been modeled on that design as well. Some decors require interior doors that symbolize strength in order to create harmony, and this particular interior door model might just be the answer. There is a dozen different finishes to choose from. State-of-the-art hardware comes standard with all Almese interior doors.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has developed and operates numerous public parks around the lake for camping and day-use activities. Lake Lanier Islands, a development by the State of Georgia and the Corps of Engineers, is the major resort area on the lake. The Islands complex provides picnicking, camping, beach areas, a water theme park, tennis courts, golf courses, rental boats, and hotel accommodations. Numerous other recreation areas operated by county and city agencies also offer recreational opportunities around the lake. Lake Lanier was host to the 1996 Centennial Olympic Rowing and Sprint/Canoe/Kayak Events, as well as the 1996 Paralympic Yachting events. These honors have helped make Lanier a world class lake.

Rearview of a replacement metal roof on this expansive residence in Waccabuc, New York. The uncluttered and sleek lines of this mid-century modern residence combined with organic, geometric forms to create numerous ridges and valleys which had to be taken into account during the installation. Further, numerous protrusions had to be navigated and flashed. We specified and installed Englert 24 gauge steel in matte black to compliment the dark brown siding of this residence. All in, this installation required 6,300 square feet of standing seam steel.

Originally built in 1915 in the Shingle style, this house was “modernized” in the 1940’s to be a center hall colonial. The transformation resulted in several eccentricities that, when combined with the history of the house, informed our design. We have been working with the family for many years, and have been responsible for the architecture, the interior design, and selection of all furniture, finishes, artwork, lighting, antiques, etc. We have also coordinated the efforts of numerous other consultants, including the landscape architect, the well driller, the landscape lighting designer, and more. We have also designed multiple custom furniture pieces, and worked with numerous artisans and craftspeople on specific pieces for the house. Our design retains the character and detail of original house, yet works in furniture pieces and design elements that seamlessly tie together a blend of western and eastern influences. We renovated and/or created following: family room, workroom, laundry room, guest suite, home office, and wine cellar in the basement; living room, dining room, sun room with bar, family room, powder room, kitchen, and breakfast area on the first floor; master suite and three bedrooms and two bathrooms on second floor; home office, and study on third floor; and painting studio, reading room, bathroom, and 3-car garage in carriage house. The home includes a Japanese Tearoom and a Japanese Guest Suite. The project included installation of all new systems, including forced air heating and cooling, hydronic radiant heating on all floors, new plumbing and bathrooms throughout, new insulation, and a new slate roof with copper gutters and leaders. We also renovated the carriage house where we added dormers, a porch, and transformed the building into a painting studio, with views out to the new Japanese Garden.

Here, the black tiles are infused with spotted reflective silver flecks. Set against this hard, dark surface are the white tiles configured with bold black roman numerals in random patterns, creating an interesting surrealistic effect of space and humor. The whimsical hatbox toilet by Kohler reiterates the simplicity and starkness of the night. A round pedestal sink lights up and adds to the illumination provided by the Perzel ceiling fixture on the ceiling.

Both the front and rear of this beautiful South Tampa home are illuminated, as well as the walkways down both sides. A feeling of security is an added bonus of a lighting system installed primarily for accent and beauty. We addressed the architectural features of the home, including adding recessed fixtures in the pavers to illuminate the entryway and second story lighting to showcase the areas over the garage. We also showcased the large oak canopies that flow over the front yard from both sides. The pool perimeter is warmly illuminated with the reflected light off the numerous andonidia palm clusters. The entire project is done in cast brass with LED illumination. Perhaps the most flattering part of this project is having the homeowner call us out numerous times to make additions and adjustments as they improve their home. It's a pleasure to work with homeowners and build long-term relationships as they add a pool or make landscaping upgrades, etc. We've received several referrals from this customer as well, the ultimate compliment.

This unique home on edge of downtown Calgary is a longer term project we had the privilege to design and implement. We were involved early in the extensive renovation process to provide input on design elements and help resolve logistical issues on the site. Among the many elements in the garden a large water feature was desired, in part to help mask traffic noise, as well as numerous areas to entertain, relax, and explore. Both large and dry-pack Rundlestone was utilized along with stamped concrete for much of the hardscaping. The slope was manipulated to construct the water feature which includes numerous falls, a stream, pond and bio-filter. Stucco walls were constructed on part of the property and river-stone walls were reconstructed to match the existing walls from the previous development. Extensive plantings throughout the grounds highlight and accent the hardscape and were designed for four seasons of interest.

The Terrace 29-inch Wall Clock offers a dapper, black resin frame with a crisp, contrasting, white face. Perfectly sized for a kitchen or living room, this timepiece will be the centerpiece of your room’s wall.
