The original kitchen in this home had a cramped galley style kitchen with a poor work flow. The original cabinetry was dark and outdated. By removing the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, we were able to obtain the open concept the clients were hoping for. With the addition of a kitchen island, we managed to salvage the same amount of kitchen storage after demolishing a wall of cabinets while adding some additional seating for kitchen entertaining and breakfast on the go. The built-in appliance wall creates a seamless path of travel from the kitchen to the laundry room. The dining room was also severely cramped and featured floral wallpaper and felt disconnected from the kitchen. The walls along both sides of the dining room were removed to open it up to the kitchen and living area. Our design team opted to accent the dining area with a gorgeous brass chandelier that plays off of the brass fixtures in the kitchen. A custom bench seat using the same cabinets used in the kitchen creates a sense of cohesion throughout the new open plan. Those same cabinets were also carried into the living room to frame the fireplace.

A steeply sloping property in the Franklin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles is the site for this 200 square foot writer’s studio, labeled the “Black Box” for its minimal geometry and dark stained cladding. Floating above an existing residence and capturing a panoramic view of Griffith Park and its famed Observatory, the Black Box serves as the office for a technology author and columnist. Entry to the structure is obtained by ascending the hillside stairs and passing below the tree canopy enveloping the studio. A custom fabricated steel fenestration system opens to the entry platform though a pair of telescoping doors. The assembly turns the corner and terminates in a picture window, directing the occupant to the expansive views. The Council Crest Residence is a renovation and addition to an early 1950s house built for inventor Karl Kurz, whose work included stereoscopic cameras and projectors. Designed by prominent local architect Roscoe Hemenway, the house was built with a traditional ranch exterior and a mid-century modern interior. It became known as “The View-Master House,” alluding to both the inventions of its owner and the dramatic view through the glass entry. Approached from a small neighborhood park, the home was re-clad maintaining its welcoming scale, with privacy obtained through thoughtful placement of translucent glass, clerestory windows, and a stone screen wall. The original entry was maintained as a glass aperture, a threshold between the quiet residential neighborhood and the dramatic view over the city of Portland and landscape beyond. At the south terrace, an outdoor fireplace is integrated into the stone wall providing a comfortable space for the family and their guests. Within the existing footprint, the main floor living spaces were completely remodeled. Raised ceilings and new windows create open, light filled spaces. An upper floor was added within the original profile creating a master suite, study, and south facing deck. Space flows freely around a central core while continuous clerestory windows reinforce the sense of openness and expansion as the roof and wall planes extend to the exterior. The apartment had not been touched since its construction 30 years prior and was in dire need of an complete renovation. The owners’ main goal was to convert the once crowded space to an open plan, filled with light. The solution lay in a different layout. Changing the previous configuration of bedrooms along the window wall which resulted in very little sunlight reaching the public spaces. Breaking the norm of the traditional building layout, the bedrooms were moved to the back of the unit, while the living room and kitchen were moved towards the new large facing windows in the front, resulting in a flood of natural sunlight. Grey flooring was applied throughout the apartment to maximize light infiltration, the use of natural materials and blue accents were used to obtain a serene and calming atmosphere.

The owners of this contemporary home wanted a sleek and stylish space that was practical for their everyday lifestyle. By installing White Macaubas honed quartzite countertops, they were able to obtain the look of white marble without its porous qualities and maintenance. This project was completed for a client who recently moved from a California mansion to a Georgia penthouse in order to be closer to family. It was a huge down size so it was important for our design team to help obtain that same grand appeal that the client was accustomed to, within a significantly smaller home. We created an open space plan that would allow for entertaining many guests at once. With proper scale in consideration, we chose to use large furniture that would make up the living room and dining space to reinforce that grand effect. Lending to this concept we hung drapery higher than the window frames and a bold ceiling fixture in order to compliment the height of the ceiling. Along with these accommodations we utilized the clients existing collection of eclectic wall art to fill the bare walls. In the end we were able to create a space that did not feel foreign to our client, but rather like home.

The sofa Auto-reverse by Arketipo Firenze, versatile and with a strong personality, derives from the idea of expressing a double soul in the living area. Its apparent casual and untidy look is in contrast with the order and extreme care for the details, to obtain an object with a sharp style and of high quality. The thin structure, elegant and discreet, enwraps and contains the seat cushions, the back and the arms, emphasized by flounces all around the perimeter which grant a definite movement to the line and add a tactile and visual softness to the sofa. The important zip, applied to the four sides of the cushions, fastens the two-sided cover, one in leather and one in fabric, gives rigour to the sofa and underlines its peculiar design. The result is a sofa in which the softness and warmth of the fabric coexists with the elegance of leather. A peculiar mix of materials to create different chromatic combinations and sophisticated matches. The structure seems to float above the ground thanks to the thin, minimal feet made of square section metal.

Complete overhaul of the common area in this wonderful Arcadia home. The living room, dining room and kitchen were redone. The direction was to obtain a contemporary look but to preserve the warmth of a ranch home. The perfect combination of modern colors such as grays and whites blend and work perfectly together with the abundant amount of wood tones in this design. The open kitchen is separated from the dining area with a large 10' peninsula with a waterfall finish detail. Notice the 3 different cabinet colors, the white of the upper cabinets, the Ash gray for the base cabinets and the magnificent olive of the peninsula are proof that you don't have to be afraid of using more than 1 color in your kitchen cabinets. The kitchen layout includes a secondary sink and a secondary dishwasher! For the busy life style of a modern family. The fireplace was completely redone with classic materials but in a contemporary layout. Notice the porcelain slab material on the hearth of the fireplace, the subway tile layout is a modern aligned pattern and the comfortable sitting nook on the side facing the large windows so you can enjoy a good book with a bright view. The bamboo flooring is continues throughout the house for a combining effect, tying together all the different spaces of the house. All the finish details and hardware are honed gold finish, gold tones compliment the wooden materials perfectly.

Photo taken by Barbara Wilson, RLA A small residential, seaside property located on Saugatuck Island in Wesport was rebuilt after devastating damage by a hurricane. All that remained from the original property was the pool and pool terrace. The house was raised approximately 5 feet to meet new FEMA codes and rebuilt under the design team of the owner, a well-known interior designer. Barbara was part of the landscape architectural team that helped create a sense of place for the new house. The landscape design included the addition of new walls and steps to the front door, new custom fencing surrounding the pool, an outdoor shower, landscape lighting, a custom fountain in the back yard, a sandbox (used as a relief area for the dog) and all new plantings. She coordinating obtaining bids and then supervised installation of the project.
