This project features a gorgeous home on a secluded street in Lytton Park, Toronto. Having lived in the home for about 10 yrs. my clients had under & over used rooms and so our remit was to make the main floor and laundry room more functional and more suitable for the family and flow in the house. This was obtained firstly by opening up the entrance foyer. We pushed the closet back into the adjacent room and took down the archway separating the spaces. We increased the size of the hall closet and laid the same herringbone floor throughout. By adding a partially glazed door to the end of the foyer we were able to steal some light back into this once dark area. The white glass beaded chandelier is an understated show-stopper! The original dining room was converted to a home office / music room. It’s a beautiful serene space and the light – there are windows on three walls in this room – provides a wonderful glow. This room is all about the details – layers of subtle patterns and textures are blended with metallics and woods. The kitchen eat-in area was transformed to a covetable bistro. We maxed out the seating by building a custom banquette and adding stunning wicker chairs that have a beautiful detail on the back. We also maxed out the storage by adding drawers beneath the seating and incorporating a broom / storage closet at the far end of the banquette. The grass-cloth herringbone paper and the brass sconces provide a lovely backdrop. The laundry room was reconfigured with lots of functional storage and wraparound countertops. All that remained from the original property was the pool and pool terrace. The house was raised approximately 5 feet to meet new FEMA codes and rebuilt under the design team of the owner, a well-known interior designer. Barbara was part of the landscape architectural team that helped create a sense of place for the new house. The landscape design included the addition of new walls and steps to the front door, new custom fencing surrounding the pool, an outdoor shower, landscape lighting, a custom fountain in the back yard, a sandbox (used as a relief area for the dog) and all new plantings. She coordinating obtaining bids and then supervised installation of the project.

Our client tasked us with creating a versatile workspace for their family, including a daughter in college. Space was at a premium in their downtown loft, so we needed to create an efficient space that could be changed in the future to fulfill other needs. Our solution was a custom metal desk on casters, topped with concrete quartz. The office has little natural light, so white lacquered cabinets and metallic wallpaper were used to add life to the space.

The Council Crest Residence is a renovation and addition to an early 1950s house built for inventor Karl Kurz, whose work included stereoscopic cameras and projectors. Designed by prominent local architect Roscoe Hemenway, the house was built with a traditional ranch exterior and a mid-century modern interior. It became known as “The View-Master House,” alluding to both the inventions of its owner and the dramatic view through the glass entry. Approached from a small neighborhood park, the home was re-clad maintaining its welcoming scale, with privacy obtained through thoughtful placement of translucent glass, clerestory windows, and a stone screen wall. The original entry was maintained as a glass aperture, a threshold between the quiet residential neighborhood and the dramatic view over the city of Portland and landscape beyond. At the south terrace, an outdoor fireplace is integrated into the stone wall providing a comfortable space for the family and their guests. Within the existing footprint, the main floor living spaces were completely remodeled. Raised ceilings and new windows create open, light filled spaces. An upper floor was added within the original profile creating a master suite, study, and south facing deck. Space flows freely around a central core while continuous clerestory windows reinforce the sense of openness and expansion as the roof and wall planes extend to the exterior. The design team helped the owners create the home of their dreams out of a parcel with dense woodlands, a pond and NY State wetlands. Barbara was part of the team that helped coordinate local and state wetland permits for building a mile long driveway to the future house site thru wetlands and around an existing pond. She facilitated the layout of the horse paddocks, by obtaining tree permits to clear almost 5 acres for the future grazing areas and an outdoor riding ring. She then supervised the entire development of the landscape on the property. Fences were added enclosing the paddocks. A swimming pool and pool house were laid out to allow easy access to the house without blocking views to the adjacent woodlands. A custom spa was carved out of a piece of ledge at one end of the pool. An outdoor kitchen was designed for the pool area patio and another smaller stand-alone grill was provided at the main house. Mature plantings were added surrounding the house, driveway and outbuildings to create a luxuriant setting for the quaint farmhouse styled home. Mature apple trees were planted along the driveway between the barn and the main house to provide fruit for the family. A custom designed bridge and wood railing system was added along the entry drive where a detention pond overflow connected to an existing pond.

Melanie's inspiration for this luxurious room was an artfully crafted Tresserra Bolero pool table that was built for recreation with incredible style and function, exemplifying the sophisticated and sporty Hampton resident. Our firm created a glamorous entertainment space where family and friends can get away and spend time together playing backgammon, chess, billiards and even a simple game of tic tac toe. A Guy Stanley Monopoly board painting greets you as you enter the room, a nod to the past. We used grass cloth wallpaper to create warmth, intimacy and texture, bringing a bit of nature into the space. The deep velvet custom sofa sits in front of a custom mirrored media cabinet, which sits below a large TV. The cabinet and TV are flanked by Carl Springer stools from Todd Merrill with glamorous Bakalowitz inspired sconces above. The Arteriors Indogene chandelier illuminates the metallic hand painted ceiling, which we designed to resemble the star filled Hamptons sky. A Jane Martin diptique ties in the room's color palette and is complemented by the whimsical sculptures that stand on either side. One ironically named "Road Runner" is also a reference to the past. A yellow lollipop sculpture by Desirez Obtain Cherish sits adjacent to an art-inspired fireplace. Melanie Roy Design created a modern, high style recreation space for family and friends to relax and spend time together in an elegant, comfortable space that complements the chic Hamptons lifestyle, showing that family fun can be stylish whether in the country or the city.
