UserAnchored by the homeowner’s 42-foot-long painting, the interiors of this Palm Springs residence were designed to showcase the owner’s art collection, and create functional spaces for daily living that can be easily adapted for large social gatherings.
Referencing the environment and architecture in both form and material, the finishes and custom furnishings bring the interior to life. Alluding to the roofs that suspend over the building, the sofas seem to hover above the carpets while the knife-edge table top appears to float above a metal base. Bleached and cerused wood mimic the “desert effect” that would naturally occur in this environment, while the textiles on the sofa are the same shade as the rocks of the landscape.
Monolithic concrete floors connect all of the spaces while concealing mechanical systems, and stone thresholds signal vertical level changes and exterior transitions. Large wall masses provide the optimal backdrop for the homeowner’s oversized art. The wall structures ground the interior, while the opposing expanses of glass frame the desert views. The location and use of operable doors and windows allows the house to naturally ventilate, reducing cooling loads. The furnishings create spaces in an architectural fashion.
Designed and fabricated for flexibility, the pieces easily accommodate the owners’ large social gatherings. The dining table can be split into two and the sofas can be pushed out along the walls, opening the center of the space to entertain. The design of the interior spaces and furnishings seamlessly integrates the setting, architecture, artwork and spaces into a cohesive whole.
Scott Christopher HomesLocated in the heart of a 1920’s urban neighborhood, this classically designed home went through a dramatic transformation. Several updates over the years had rendered the space dated and feeling disjointed. The main level received cosmetic updates to the kitchen, dining, formal living and family room to bring the decor out of the 90’s and into the 21st century. Space from a coat closet and laundry room was reallocated to the transformation of a storage closet into a stylish powder room. Upstairs, custom cabinetry, built-ins, along with fixture and material updates revamped the look and feel of the bedrooms and bathrooms. But the most striking alterations occurred on the home’s exterior, with the addition of a 24′ x 52′ pool complete with built-in tanning shelf, programmable LED lights and bubblers as well as an elevated spa with waterfall feature. A custom pool house was added to compliment the original architecture of the main home while adding a kitchenette, changing facilities and storage space to enhance the functionality of the pool area. The landscaping received a complete overhaul and Oaks Rialto pavers were added surrounding the pool, along with a lounge space shaded by a custom-built pergola. These renovations and additions converted this residence from well-worn to a stunning, urban oasis.

EVA Architecture, LLCThe Lakota Residence occupies a spectacular 10-acre site in the hills above northwest Portland, Oregon. The residence consists of a main house of nearly 10,000 sf and a caretakers cottage/guest house of 1,200 sf over a shop/garage. Both have been sited to capture the four mountain Cascade panorama plus views to the city and the Columbia River gorge while maintaining an internal privacy. The buildings are set in a highly manicured and refined immediate site set within a largely forested environment complete with a variety of wildlife.
Successful business people, the owners desired an elegant but "edgey" retreat that would accommodate an active social life while still functional as "mission control" for their construction materials business. There are days at a time when business is conducted from Lakota. The three-level main house has been benched into an edge of the site. Entry to the middle or main floor occurs from the south with the entry framing distant views to Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier. Conceived as a ruin upon which a modernist house has been built, the radiused and largely opaque stone wall anchors a transparent steel and glass north elevation that consumes the view. Recreational spaces and garage occupy the lower floor while the upper houses sleeping areas at the west end and office functions to the east.
Obsessive with their concern for detail, the owners were involved daily on site during the construction process. Much of the interiors were sketched on site and mocked up at full scale to test formal concepts. Eight years from site selection to move in, the Lakota Residence is a project of the old school process.

While this client's master bath had those elements, it had also lost it's luster making it cold, hard and uninviting. Our goal with this remodel was to modernize the contemporary elements while creating a warm and comfortable space to begin each day. The element of line is displayed in the shower through the use of thin vertical tiles that draw your eye upward toward the custom ombre mosaic. Form is communicated through the soft curves on the faucets, vessel sinks and freestanding tub. Each one has a flow similar to the silhouette of a woman, bringing beauty and comfort. Shape occurs in the geometric inset of the marble floor, which is heated through a sub-floor system. The warmth of this space is not only felt with the feet but also with the heart. Session is the latest addition from Eilersen, who has once again created a sofa for the most discerning of audiences. The construction is supported by slim legs made of brushed stainless steel, which achieves the familiar ambition of completing the shape through functionality.
As with all of Eilersen’s sofas, it is designed, produced and assembled to withstand the wear that occurs naturally at a popular place for relaxation and rest. “With Session, we have created a sofa that is as beautiful to look at as it is comfortable to sit in. The consistency of the construction is an achievement from a design point of view, but the most important thing for me is that the seating comfort is optimal, as well as that it continues to be so,” says designer Jens Juul Eilersen.
Just add a personal touch
The sofa has a fixed back, and the two loose back cushions can be moved around at pleasure. The seat is Eilersen’s renowned down top, which with its core of foam - and swaddling of down and duck feathers - ensures comfort and lasting resilience over the course of time. The Session is a modular piece of furniture and can be upholstered in textile or leather. Therefore, the possibilities for enjoying a sofa with a personal touch are virtually infinite. This means that Eilersen’s customers can choose the colour and structure that precisely matches their own preferences and dreams.

Precast stone was used on the pool's raised walls. Horizontal on the pool coping and then vertically for the wall fascia.
This elevated infinity pool had to meet a variety of unique design
challenges. (1) The bottom of the pool shell is 10ft-12ft above grade, and the bottom of the pool is flat to be able to achieve maximum pool depth above base flood elevation requirements. This
pool is in a FEMA flood zone – VE Zone and the flood water must be able to pass underneath the pool in the event of any type of flood event should one occur. (2) You’ll also notice this pool also has a raised wall/seating ledge around the pool’s perimeter. The pool wall is about 20 inches above the deck due to the bottom of the pool shell needing to be 10ft above FEMA base flood. The house could only be built so high due to Sullivan’s Island building regulations and the pool had to be designed coming out of the deck of the 1st floor elevation to achieve the 4ft depth. The homeowners also wanted the level spa to disappear as much as possible into the pool design, so we sloped the dam wall towards the spa.

Corinthian Fine HomesThese clients have a large family with teen kids and wanted a modern updated basement to accommodate their social activities and draw the kids to their house to hang out. With plenty of room in the basement, we designed a full-service bar, equipped with a sink, dishwasher drawers, icemaker, beverage refrigerator and liquor storage. Framing was added over the bar to accentuate the shape of the bar and give the feeling of a floating bulkhead. A wall of glass mosaic was added to give texture and depth to the space, along with a leather upholstered overlay on the front of the bar. The counter tops are a combination of Quartz and Eucalyptus wood with poured resin over the top for protection. There is a lounge area with a projection TV and 84” wide screen with plenty of seating and storage for games. The other end of the basement hosts a ping pong table set aside for the serious players. The existing lighting was removed and a new lighting layout with fixtures were installed to address any activities that might be occurring in the various spaces. The end result is an incredible living space in the basement for both the teens and their friends, as well as the adults to enjoy games on the big screen as well as a rambunctious game of ping pong.
