Timeless Classic. The landscape must complement the architecture of the house, so designing this garden for our antique reproduction needed to harken back to a different time. Material choices such as antique brick, reclaimed granite, and natural-cleft bluestone were all incorporated into the composition to create a timeless beauty all within the context of a bygone setting. Directly adjacent to the driveway and guest parking, the ‘kitchen garden’ was surrounded by a custom-built cedar fence with a self-closing cannonball gate. Herbs and cutting perennials fill the space as well as a small bench for reflection or to take a break from tending to the garden. From a functional standpoint, this has become the most-used entrance to the house, with the original main door serving only as decoration. The arrival sequence is easy to understand and has the guests passing through the landscape on a well-lit path via our hand-built copper lantern atop an architectural post. Planting was purposely kept to a minimum with mostly perennials and a couple of common lilacs — all keeping within the design intent. Existing natural-cleft bluestone was repurposed with a linear approach for a dining and lounging terrace in the rear of the property. Three sides are surrounded by sun-loving plants with grass coming right up to the patio offering a seamless transition to the yard beyond. Simple, elegant, and timeless.

Our clients came to our North Showroom in Cedar Park, TX wanting to completely renovate the outdated cabinets and countertops in their newly purchased home. The flow of the kitchen was not aligning with their new family needs, and the style did not match their modern vision. The dated kitchen left a lot of unused space, and had pain points that disturbed the flow and symmetry of the space. We developed a design to take advantage of the room height, spacious area, and natural light from the bay window nook area. Our designer Dave met with the clients in the showroom and discovered the needs and wants to make the kitchen remodel a success. After understanding the client’s vision and requirements, they begun the collaboration on their kitchen design. During this phase we concluded we could achieve the kitchen design with in-stock cabinets from Kitchen Cabinet Distributors (KCD), a national recognized in-stock cabinet provider. We could have chosen a custom kitchen cabinetry line, however KCD’s offerings were the perfect fit for the design and allowed for an opportunity to save some of the budget for full quartz backsplash vs. tile. Our designers help you navigate the different lines we carry and are thoughtful to not steer you to more than you need to succeed. The first order of business was to change the orientation of the island, and move its position to frame the new galley arrangement. This would allow for better egress around the island and prevent tight spaces for a busy new kitchen. Secondly, now was the time to take advantage of the room height and install new stacked wall cabinets with clear glass panels on the top row. This made the kitchen renovation feel more grand, bright, and inviting. The glass provided opportunity to tie in the lighting scheme and lend more warmth to the design. Coupled with the toe kick and under cabinet lights in the base cabinets, the kitchen invites you in. Dave also took full advantage of the kitchen layout by using upper cabinets and no open shelving. We also wanted to find a new home for the built-in microwave as a stainless hood was now going to frame the cooktop / oven combo. We modified the cabinet in the island to trim in a microwave, at the same time keeping it out of view from the living area. Building on this approach, we also took the trash bin out of the kitchen space and provided a dedicated double trash bin cabinet. Aesthetics were very important in this design.

She has an eye for unique ways to use vintage pieces and incorporating those into some of the most interesting and compelling displays. What has made this design relationship work is simply one of respect. I know when to give her that push outside of her comfort zone and incorporate her collections with selections that work with what she has, but that offer a new spin on putting it all together. From that initial "spruce up" has come a makeover in her Living Room and currently one completed in her Family Room. Although there are signs of my design throughout her home, the detail and selection of the collections and vintage finds are all Sally!! I truly think that is how Design should be. Blending old and new, and a Designer listening to what makes the client happy. Client: It was fun to be in style for a year or two, but it’s back to being the quirky lady. I started collecting in my teens and enjoy the hunt for new finds of all types. Cori helped me to enjoy my collections in a new and modern way! As always I had too many things. With her designer eye she taught me to blend the old and the new and to use different materials. The best part was going shopping with one of my best friends, who just happens to be a designer!! She is definitely the ying to my much needed yang.

Photography by Caryn B. Davis Located in the Cornfield Point area of Old Saybrook along Long Island Sound, this project brought a classic, yet forgotten beach house back to life. Through a little detective work and some creative ingenuity, we restored and enhanced the exterior to it’s former glory and transformed the interior to a highly efficient and functional home all the while uplifting its quaint cottage charm. On the exterior, we recreated a wonderful, airy front porch with cozy bench seats that look out to the water. The white cedar shingle siding is pre-bleached with a subtle flair at the bottom and a delicate break at mid-elevation. The asphalt shingles are not only beautifully matched with the siding, but offer superior reflective qualities to dissipate the heat of the summer sun. On the interior, we joined the front seasonal porch with the family room to form a larger, open living and dining space with paneled walls and ceilings anchored by the original round stone fireplace. In the rear, we carefully crafted a galley kitchen and laundry space with an adjacent first floor master suite. The diminutive house and property posed multiple practical and regulatory challenges which were overcome by a strong team effort, due diligence, and a commitment to the process. John R. The owners spend a lot of time camping and traveling and wanted the home to capture the same feeling of freedom that the outdoors offers. The spaces are practical, easy to keep clean and designed to create a free flowing space that opens up to nature beyond the large triple glazed Passive House windows. Built-in cubbies and shelving help keep everything organized and there is no wasted space in the house - Enough space for yoga, visiting family, relaxing, sculling boats and two home offices. The most frequent comment of visitors is how relaxed they feel. This is a result of the unique connection to nature, the abundance of natural materials, great air quality, and the play of light throughout the house. The exterior of the house is simple, but a striking reflection of the local farming environment. The materials are low maintenance, as is the landscaping.
