Dramatic framework forms a matrix focal point over this North Scottsdale home's back patio and negative edge pool, underlining the architect's trademark use of symmetry to draw the eye through the house and out to the stunning views of the Valley beyond. This almost 9000 SF hillside hideaway is an effortless blend of Old World charm with contemporary style and amenities. Organic colors and rustic finishes connect the space with its desert surroundings. Large glass walls topped with clerestory windows that retract into the walls open the main living space to the outdoors.

Charming Old World meets new, open space planning concepts. This Ranch Style home turned English Cottage maintains very traditional detailing and materials on the exterior, but is hiding a more transitional floor plan inside. The 49 foot long Great Room brings together the Kitchen, Family Room, Dining Room, and Living Room into a singular experience on the interior. By turning the Kitchen around the corner, the remaining elements of the Great Room maintain a feeling of formality for the guest and homeowner's experience of the home. With much careful planning and design this classic Old World library radiates style, warmth and grace. Layers of custom hand finished woodwork add great architecture detail to this gorgeous library. Entering in from the foyer, arched French doors were custom built to blend with the homes beautiful front entry. The intricate woodwork in rich cherry, include layered crown molding, raised panels, bookshelves and a desk unit. A handcrafted mantle with a pilaster encased overmantle with a white arabesque marble surround highlight the fireplace. The vaulted ceiling exposes handcrafted timbers, adding to the old world feel. Uniquely designed light channels hide low voltage LED accent lighting that illuminates all open shelving and ceiling crown molding. A crystal Chandelier adds the crowning touch over the baby grand piano. Plantation shutters were custom stained to match the color and finish of the woodwork. Then elegant custom draperies were added. The design is complete with luxurious leather recliners and a hand knotted wool and silk rug. Old World European, Country Cottage. Three separate cottages make up this secluded village over looking a private lake in an old German, English, and French stone villa style. Hand scraped arched trusses, wide width random walnut plank flooring, distressed dark stained raised panel cabinetry, and hand carved moldings make these traditional buildings look like they have been here for 100s of years. Newly built of old materials, and old traditional building methods, including arched planked doors, leathered stone counter tops, stone entry, wrought iron straps, and metal beam straps. The Lake House is the first, a Tudor style cottage with a slate roof, 2 bedrooms, view filled living room open to the dining area, all overlooking the lake. European fantasy cottage with hand hewn beams, exposed curved trusses and scraped walnut floors, carved moldings, steel straps, wrought iron lighting and real stone arched fireplace. The Carriage Home fills in when the kids come home to visit, and holds the garage for the whole idyllic village. This cottage features 2 bedrooms with on suite baths, a large open kitchen, and an warm, comfortable and inviting great room. All overlooking the lake. The third structure is the Wheel House, running a real wonderful old water wheel, and features a private suite upstairs, and a work space downstairs. Organized around a freestanding soaking tub set against a full height feature wall of mixed mosaic tile. A frameless glass shower enclosure, the floor is penny tile or small format mosaic in white, and the ceiling carries exposed painted beams.

Our clients live in a typical, traditional suburban home. One homeowner had been collecting wine and requested a dedicated room for storing, tasting and entertaining that felt as if he were in a California wine cellar. Our design team created a room with Old World touches including a dramatic arched entrance bordered by decorative faux stone quoins. The doorway has two dark wood and glass doors. Key features include two built-in dual zone, wine refrigerators, a flagstone look floor, mural on the back wall with an arch that looks as if there is a wine cellar behind it. Furnishings include a custom made, circular epoxy table with a live edge, 4 bar stools, two upholstered chairs and end table. Rough-hewn look beams adorn the ceilings and the walls and ceilings are hand troweled plaster with a glaze.

The comfortable elegance of this French-Country inspired home belies the challenges faced during its conception. The beautiful, wooded site was steeply sloped requiring study of the location, grading, approach, yard and views from and to the rolling Pennsylvania countryside. The client desired an old world look and feel, requiring a sensitive approach to the extensive program. Large, modern spaces could not add bulk to the interior or exterior. Furthermore, it was critical to balance voluminous spaces designed for entertainment with more intimate settings for daily living while maintaining harmonic flow throughout. The result home is wide, approached by a winding drive terminating at a prominent facade embracing the motor court. Stone walls feather grade to the front façade, beginning the masonry theme dressing the structure. A second theme of true Pennsylvania timber-framing is also introduced on the exterior and is subsequently revealed in the formal Great and Dining rooms. Timber-framing adds drama, scales down volume, and adds the warmth of natural hand-wrought materials. The Great Room is literal and figurative center of this master down home, separating casual living areas from the elaborate master suite. The lower level accommodates casual entertaining and an office suite with compelling views. The rear yard, cut from the hillside, is a composition of natural and architectural elements with timber framed porches and terraces accessed from nearly every interior space flowing to a hillside of boulders and waterfalls. The result is a naturally set, livable, truly harmonious, new home radiating old world elegance. This home is powered by a geothermal heating and cooling system and state of the art electronic controls and monitoring systems.
