The maple is the main vertical accent. Though there are another couple of mid-sized plants occupying key areas, most of the plantings constitute a low, textural tapestry of green.

The backyard had an existing stone plinth that was incorporated into the pergola design. In this progress shot, which was taken right after a wind storm, the area still needs to be planted .The seating area will eventually be screened by an espaliered fig, and the open trellis on the left will house a grapevine.

Looking from the garage toward the dining area. There is no lawn in this backyard. All walkable areas are covered in flagstone, and the beds display a tapestry of textures and color.

As you can see, there was enough headroom under the end of the "phantom counter" to fit some drawers in.

This is the 'Before' picture. The owners desired a change from the manicured, water intensive lawn and meatballed trees and shrubs. Being in a walking neighborhood, they also wanted a way to access the front door from the sidewalk, without having to enter via the driveway.

The stair from the upper patio and the stairs leading down to the garage had nothing connecting them, so we added a lower concrete walkway, while leaving ample space for new plantings.
