Progress shot - this was taken before the built-in planters were stained. This deck was raised to correspond to interior floor levels. The remaining garden areas were organized around its central role. In a future phase, a bedroom window will be exchanged for French doors. The deck is open on one side toward a new dining area relocated to the former driveway, and enclosed on three sides by verdant screens in one of the built-in planters. The square planter on the left in this photo marks a turn into the lower level "living room" of the backyard, and the stairs. It will eventually hold a small flowering tree. Optically clear window film from Suntrol has many benefits. Not only can it save you up to 1/3 on energy costs all year round, but it provides 92% more insulting power than glass alone, filters 99% of UV rays, protects your furnishings and prevents glare on TV and computers!

We used the log to create a table garden which also serves as a visual barrier along the edge of the decking. Behind it will be a "rain curtain" water feature, which will create a sound- and visual barrier toward the neighbor. The "rain curtain" was not yet built at the time I took this photo.
