Designed to maximize the views of Stockbridge Bowl, there are views from every room. Creative space planning provides for a kitchen/dining area, living room, home office, two fireplaces, three bedrooms and three full bathrooms. Built-ins for work spaces, storage, display and niches for sitting optimize all available space.

The client’s brief was to create a space reminiscent of their beloved downtown Chicago industrial loft, in a rural farm setting, while incorporating their unique collection of vintage and architectural salvage. The result is a custom designed space that blends life on the farm with an industrial sensibility. The new house is located on approximately the same footprint as the original farm house on the property. Barely visible from the road due to the protection of conifer trees and a long driveway, the house sits on the edge of a field with views of the neighbouring 60 acre farm and creek that runs along the length of the property. The main level open living space is conceived as a transparent social hub for viewing the landscape. Large sliding glass doors create strong visual connections with an adjacent barn on one end and a mature black walnut tree on the other. The house is situated to optimize views, while at the same time protecting occupants from blazing summer sun and stiff winter winds. The wall to wall sliding doors on the south side of the main living space provide expansive views to the creek, and allow for breezes to flow throughout. The wrap around aluminum louvered sun shade tempers the sun. The subdued exterior material palette is defined by horizontal wood siding, standing seam metal roofing and large format polished concrete blocks. The interiors were driven by the owners’ desire to have a home that would properly feature their unique vintage collection, and yet have a modern open layout. Polished concrete floors and steel beams on the main level set the industrial tone and are paired with a stainless steel island counter top, backsplash and industrial range hood in the kitchen. An old drinking fountain is built-in to the mudroom millwork, carefully restored bi-parting doors frame the library entrance, and a vibrant antique stained glass panel is set into the foyer wall allowing diffused coloured light to spill into the hallway. Upstairs, refurbished claw foot tubs are situated to view the landscape. The double height library with mezzanine serves as a prominent feature and quiet retreat for the residents. The white oak millwork exquisitely displays the homeowners’ vast collection of books and manuscripts. The material palette is complemented by steel counter tops, stainless steel ladder hardware and matte black metal mezzanine guards. The stairs carry the same language, with white oak open risers and stainless steel woven wire mesh panels set into a matte black steel frame. Our goal here was to offer our clients a full spa-like experience. From the unique aesthetic to the luxury finishes, this master bathroom now has a completely new look and function! For a true spa experience, we installed a shower steam, rain head shower fixture, and whirlpool tub. The bathtub platform actually extends into the shower, working as a bench for the clients to relax on while steaming! Convenient corner shelves optimize shower storage whereas a custom walnut shelf above the bath offers the perfect place to store dry towels. We continued the look of rich, organic walnut with a second wall-mounted shelf above the toilet and a large, semi-customized vanity, where the louvered doors accentuate the natural beauty of this material. The white brick accent wall, herringbone patterned flooring, and black hardware were introduced for texture and a trendy, timeless look that our clients will love for years to come. Who wouldn't want to keep their apartment in Buenos Aires? This family did. Which meant their new home in Bloomington was a fresh start and needed remodeling as well as furnishings—rugs, seating, art and everything in between. Local architect Russ Herndon revamped and opened up the kitchen in this 1970s ranch, moving awkwardly placed doors in three different locations to improve the traffic flow and allow for optimal furniture placement. SYI swept in to furnish and finish the public spaces with a careful mix of vintage and new, neutral and bold, family comfort and modern chic. The homeowner (turned friend) was a wonderful collaborator and speedy decision maker. Only one hard and fast rule governed the process: no yellow and blue, the colors of Brazil, Argentina's arch rival in soccer.

Our NYC studio designed this gorgeous condo for a family of four with the goal of maximizing space in a modest amount of square footage. A custom sectional in the living room was created to accommodate the family without feeling overcrowded, while the son's bedroom features a custom Murphy bed to optimize space during the day. To fulfill the daughter's wish for fairy lighting, an entire wall of them was installed behind her bed, casting a beautiful glow at night. In the kitchen, we added plenty of cabinets below the island for maximum efficiency. Storage units were incorporated in the bedroom and living room to house the TV and showcase decorative items. Additionally, the tub in the powder room was removed to create an additional closet for much-needed storage space.

We designed the house to maximize the sweeping views of Indian Peaks mountain range, while simultaneously optimizing passive solar design. The open floor plan brings natural light and passive cooling into every part of the house; the vaulted ceilings create an airy, sunny feeling. Every room opens to generous patios and decks to facilitate easy indoor/outdoor living. White Oak floors, granite counters and local flagstone finishes lend a warm modern texture to the home. We carefully preserved one hand-built quartz wall that was part of the house that formerly occupied the site, and restored the original adjacent homestead, successfully receiving Historic Landmark designation. This very energy efficient home (HERS 40 – uses 60% less energy than allowed by code), uses solar–photovoltaics, foam insulation, Energy Star windows & appliances, LED lighting, and a high-efficiency mechanical system. This cramped 1970s master bathroom was in need of an organized overhaul with modern selections. A custom barn door with mirror on both sides and unique overlay on one side creates a beautiful invitation to this retreat. The particularly designed bathroom floor provides an eye catching iridescent tile strip that is repeated in the shower as the vertical band. Opposite of the new shower fixtures is a tall bump-in with shower shelves where the lowest shelf doubles as a toe ledge for shaving. The new sink vanity cabinets offer optimal organizational areas including a drawer that incorporates a USB plug-in for a charging station and an outlet for all the hair styling tools. Outside this bathroom area is a special dressing area with custom cabinets to incorporate storage and organization for laundry hampers, clothes, jewelry and purses. This petite kitchen was previously closed off from the dining and living room. The compact size of the kitchen made it difficult for the client to host their large family gatherings. With the new design, the spaces were joined by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room. The space of the kitchen was optimized by recessing items into adjacent walls. The refrigerator was recessed into the wall of the adjacent garage. The ovens, pantry, and appliance garage were recessed into the wall, borrowing a few square feet from the bedroom closet and living room. The finishes throughout the kitchen celebrate the clients love of travel and collection of keepsakes from around the world. The mosaic printed tiles on the backsplash and refrigerator wrap bring an eclectic mix of encaustic tile designs from around the world.
