Deep in the historic district of Salem, Massachusetts, our design-build team worked to create a beautiful conservatory glass roof system to bring light, beauty, and functionality to our client. The end result is a custom glass roof lantern crowning a freshly constructed year-round addition which elegantly compliments an already extraordinary home. The space was designed to accommodate dual-purpose usage; the homeowner enjoys light gardening in one portion of the conservatory and morning coffee in the other. We strategically placed a glass partition and door to enable independent climate controls for the greenhouse and den. Incredible moldings and copperwork coupled with a custom Marvin door and window package dress the vertical walls while a custom open lantern glass roof provides an amazing view from the interior. Sunspace Design glass roof lanterns are constructed with solid mahogany components and concealed steel designed to withstand the powerful elements characteristic of New England weather. The comfort and shelter created through our rigid engineering gives our clients the freedom to relax in the natural light—and in this case appreciate a horticultural hobby—for all four seasons. Tidbit from our website ~ This 20' × 30' prefab cabin kit is a large post and beam model, that comes with design options to create a functional space to suit a variety of needs. This kit has a versatile frame that can be set up as a cabin, cold storage, two or three bay garage, living quarters, as a livestock barn or any combination of. This particular cabin kit is a favorite as a 1,200 square foot tiny house. Designed to meet tough building standards, our 20×30 cabin kit features heavy 8×8 post and beams supporting a full loft and a steep 8/12 pitch gable roof. The timber frame offers endless possibilities for customizations. Optional dormers in the loft can provide light and additional space. This cabin kit also comes with a choice of 8’ or 10’ first floor ceiling heights to allow either more room on the first floor or in the loft. Shed roof overhangs ranging from 4’ to 12’ wide on any or all of the exterior walls can accommodate simple firewood storage, create additional interior square footage, or open covered space. Our 20×30 timber frame cabin is our most customizable and expandable design, all at a great, affordable price. Multiple siding and roofing options ensure your finished 20×30 cabin can match existing buildings on your property. Consider adding a complete insulation package to turn this quality frame into a cozy four season cabin. The 8×8 post and beam framing members allow ample space to easily install thick insulation with high R-values. Gayler’s design team and construction crew worked closely with the aquarium experts. Several meetings were held to discuss and review every aspect of the 250-gallon saltwater fish tank. Among those details it was determined that the cabinet needed to be built with a steel frame in order to support the weight of the 3,000-pound tank. A chase cooling system was also installed below the tank in order to keep the water at a required, cooler temperature. New cabinetry had to be measured with extreme care to cover the original cabinet footprint. Since the existing kitchen tile flooring would be difficult to find, Gayler also took special care during construction to protect the tile. The dated cabinetry in the kitchen and butler’s pantry was replaced with all new semi-custom inset maple cabinets painted in a Swiss Coffee finish. A full overlay, custom-built kitchen hood, also in painted maple, anchors the kitchen’s large size and is complimented by a full ceiling-height backsplash in a herringbone pattern. Since the tile was custom-made, it had variations. Gayler Design Build took meticulous care to select and lay the tile to preserve the beautiful pattern. The kitchen counters, the island, and the butler's pantry are finished in a marble-inspired Sereno Bianco Quartz. To the delight of our client, they selected all new high-end appliances. Their appliance package included a SubZero 36” Integrated column refrigerator and freezer, a Wolf 60” dual fuel, 6 burner with a double griddle, a Thermador oven and microwave, a Thermador warming drawer, a Cove 24” dishwasher, a SubZero 15” Ice Maker and a SubZero 24” undercounter wine refrigerator. Finally, pendant lighting, open and glass shelving, and dual sinks make a dramatic statement to this fantastic kitchen and butler's pantry transformation.

In this 1905 Tudor home, the intent of this design was to take advantage of the classic architecture of the home and incorporate modern conveniences. Located in the Joseph Berry Subdivision in Detroit, this stellar home presented several design challenges. The most difficult challenge to overcome was the 11” slope from one end of the kitchen to the other, caused by 110 years of settling. All new floor joists were installed and the floor by the side door was then recessed down one step. This created a cozy nook when you first enter the kitchen. A tiered ceiling with strategically planned cabinetry heights and crown molding concealed the slope of the walls at the ceiling level. The second challenge in this historic home was the awkward foot print of the kitchen. It’s likely that this kitchen had a butler’s pantry originally. However it was remodeled sometime in the 70’s and all original character was erased. Clever pantry storage was added to an awkward corner creating a space that mimicked the essence of a butler’s pantry, while providing storage desired in kitchens today. Keeping the large footprint of the kitchen presented obstacles with the working triangle; the distance from the sink to the cooktop is several feet. The solution was installation of a pot filler over the cooktop that added convenience and elegance (not sure about this word). Not everything in this project was a challenge; the discovery of a brick chimney hiding behind plaster was a welcome surprise and brought character back honoring the historic charm of this beautiful home.
