I want my space to be functional, warm and cozy. I want to be able to sit by my fireplace, read my beloved books, gaze through the large bay window and admire the view. This space should feel like my sanctuary but I want some whimsy and lots of color like an old English den but it must be organized and cohesive.
Designer secret: Building the fireplace and making sure to be able to fit non custom bookcases on either side, adding painted black beams to the ceiling giving the space the English cozy den feeling, utilizing the opposite wall to fit tall standard bookcases, minimizing the furniture so that the clients' over sized couch fits, adding a whimsical desk and wall paper to tie all the elements together.

TOC design & construction inc.Sometimes a large rectangular space can be challenging, especially when you need to use oversized existing pieces of furniture. But there is no such thing as a challenge in TOC design’s mind, only solutions.
I took advantage of the grand space with its natural light by blending the old with some new contemporary pieces and making it feel more coherent.
In this large formal living space, we removed the old damage wood floors and replaces with 3/4" thick red oak 3 1/2" plank wood in a Java color by Mercier. The room was painted 6206-21 Sketch paper and tone on tone with a slight rose gold wall paper was used at the fireplace wall. The existing fireplace mill work also got a facelift with ultra white semi gloss paint. The space got all new moldings and trims. I kept the clients existing couches and oversized rug and added a large coffee and end tables as well as a console and 2 book cases in mat gold with glass shelving, this gives the space depth without it feeling too heavy.

Haus Interior DesignThe new-construction house in Bethesda, Maryland, had lovely millwork, including coffered ceilings, wainscoting, crown moldings and tall baseboards. But it lacked our clients' personality and style that reflected their Southern roots and love of coastal settings. We incorporated elements like wallpaper, paint and furnishings and without having to remodel, which made a huge transformation for this home and family of six. There is a varying but also consistent blue and white theme throughout the home from navy to slate, interspersed with cheerful patterns through the throw pillows and accent fabrics, as well as bold colors in the drapery and custom sitting room built-ins. There are also coastal vibes make an appearance through several paintings, woven grass shade, jute area rugs, and driftwood finishes, to create a light and breezy organic feel.

One being the bed placement against what was the original fireplace in the room. The second was the wall and area rug color and the general blandness of the yellow especially against the white of the original paneled door and window moldings.
