Shingle Style Overlooking the Beach The site is a prominent one, on a corner lot overlooking the popular Pear Tree Point beach, so privacy was key to designing a comfortable residence for this young family: a home that provided private yard-spaces while retaining lovely water views. A Shingle-Style house with front, side and upper porches and interior spaces that invite leisure was a natural choice for this beachside site. By designing a series of outbuildings – a pool house with guest quarters, a garage and shed – that parallel the road, the pool and backyard entertaining spaces are nicely secluded. Separating the spaces transforms this 5,900 square-foot residence into an intimate and informal home. The buildings are of varying visual textures; the main house is clad in cedar shingle while the vertical board-and-batten of the 900 square-foot garage evokes a barn. Sited along the North edge of a double lot property, the Berman Residence is designed to celebrate the Southern California house-to-garden relationship. The building’s linear plan parallels the garden on the Southern lot, creating an equal counterpart to the indoor space along its entire length. At ground level, the house opens generously to the garden using a system of independently sliding wood screen and glass doors. This kids' bath features a double vanity and fun pop of green on the mirror frame and cabinet fronts. Floors were done in a simple white penny round and the vanity consists of Caesarstone countertops and undermount Kohler Ladena sinks. Located six feet from the sand, this residence seeks to reframe the contextual reference of its inhabitants in order to mitigate its highly trafficked location and create a private beach retreat. In parallel to its unobstructed ocean view, the design carves out infinite pockets of nature within the architecture. From the dining room’s bamboo garden to the expansive skylight above the stairwell, moments of serenity have been carefully composed throughout the home in order to make each frame as infinite as the horizon line of the Pacific Ocean.

As a conceptual urban infill project, the Wexley is designed for a narrow lot in the center of a city block. The 26’x48’ floor plan is divided into thirds from front to back and from left to right. In plan, the left third is reserved for circulation spaces and is reflected in elevation by a monolithic block wall in three shades of gray. Punching through this block wall, in three distinct parts, are the main levels windows for the stair tower, bathroom, and patio. The right two-thirds of the main level are reserved for the living room, kitchen, and dining room. At 16’ long, front to back, these three rooms align perfectly with the three-part block wall façade. It’s this interplay between plan and elevation that creates cohesion between each façade, no matter where it’s viewed. Given that this project would have neighbors on either side, great care was taken in crafting desirable vistas for the living, dining, and master bedroom. Upstairs, with a view to the street, the master bedroom has a pair of closets and a skillfully planned bathroom complete with soaker tub and separate tiled shower. The dining room serves as a transition space between the entry and kitchen/living areas. The hidden transom window above the art wall accentuates the clients' personal photography collection, while the transom window in the foreground adds light to the central living area. Contemporary rugs were sourced from Oriental Rug Gallery in Austin, TX to add a soft texture over the walnut floors. The existing mid-century brick walls were painted a warm white to tone down the variety of materials found in the space. An open-grain cypress is used on the ceiling. The ivory Linda Chairs from Bontempi also complement the wood tones used in the space, and the translucent glass and leather Bubble Chandelier by Pelle adds light while maintaining the open feeling of the room. The master bath in this mid-century remodel has been completely reimagined; a long double-vanity counter, large window, two new skylights, light finishes, custom white oak millwork, and contemporary lighting all contribute to its open feel. Soft modern furnishings and light fixtures complement the home's fusion of contemporary and mid-century architecture. The plush rug and tufted bench offer comfort in the fully tiled bathroom. Tile is from the Savoy line of Ann Sacks, undermount sinks are the Kohler Ladena, and faucets are the Talis-S by Hansgrohe.
