Philadelphia Row Home Renovation focusing on maximizing storage for a young family of 5. We created a "mudroom" in the front of the row home with a large living room space for family time + hosting. We used kid-friendly furnishings with performance fabrics that are durable and easy to clean. Prioritized eco-friendly selections, utilizing locally sourced + American made pieces.

Aspect 221 is a multi-experiential home designed for a multi-generational family. Set on a sloping corner property in a 1960's Golden Valley neighborhood, this home offers a variety of ways to connect to the immediate landscapes and distant views. The house itself is divided vertically with interaction between families occurring through the centrally located sculptural stair. Horizontal movement in each direction leads to distinct environments provided for the families; multiple habitats offering variety of space, light, and privacy. Expanding towards the west, the property takes advantage of the sweeping views and provides a perfect opportunity for a walk-out lower level and tuck under garage. The young family occupies the middle and upper floors, while the parents occupy the lower level. Each family has their own private entry and dedicated outdoor space. The home has 4 distinct outdoor spaces; a north shade deck and south sun deck, as well as an upper east lawn and lower west lawn. These spaces provide multiple habitats for the families to come together or move apart, offering variety and privacy. We designed Aspect 221 with a nod to the various “aspects” offered by the site and its natural context. The base of the house is a black monolithic plinth anchored into the hillside, containing the garage and older parent’s home. This allows the upper two floors, enclosed in a fractured white and wood box, to remain humanly scaled and to move and gesture freely by twisting the middle floor off axis, and then twisting the upper floor off axis again. Each level offers views in varied directions revealing the site in different ways as you rise in elevation. I was hired by the parents of a soon-to-be teenage girl turning 13 years-old. They wanted to remodel her bedroom from a young girls room to a teenage room. This project was a joy and a dream to work on! I got the opportunity to channel my inner child. I wanted to design a space that she would love to sleep in, entertain, hangout, do homework, and lounge in. The first step was to interview her so that she would feel like she was a part of the process and the decision making. I asked her what was her favorite color, what was her favorite print, her favorite hobbies, if there was anything in her room she wanted to keep, and her style. The second step was to go shopping with her and once that process started she was thrilled. One of the challenges for me was making sure I was able to give her everything she wanted. The other challenge was incorporating her favorite pattern-- zebra print. I decided to bring it into the room in small accent pieces where it was previously the dominant pattern throughout her room. The color palette went from light pink to her favorite color teal with pops of fuchsia. I wanted to make the ceiling a part of the design so I painted it a deep teal and added a beautiful teal glass and crystal chandelier to highlight it. This project was designed, and developed by Rhodes Architecture + Light while Josh Meharry was a team member. After seeing this roof design the clients dubbed their new house “Garuda” after the Hindu Demi-God with wings so large they darkened the sky, and the name stuck. These clients were a couple who were wanting a house for them and their dogs that could also house each of their parents who came often to visit them from India for prolonged stays. They wanted to have plenty of common space for everyone to spend time together as well as a sense of privacy between each of the three bedroom suites. The resulting design consists of two lower “plinths”, each one housing one of the parent’s ensuite bedrooms which open onto private exterior patios in the rear yard. The upper level that bridges over and cantilevers beyond the lower plinths contains the communal living spaces and the couple’s bedroom suite, while the tops of the lower plinths then become roof decks for the spaces above. The void between the lower plinths serves as the primary entrance, and this space opens into a double height space with skylights that draw you up and make you feel connected to the upper living spaces despite the level change. Other unique spaces and elements were integrated into the design at the client’s request such as a Puja (prayer) room that opened into a screened exterior landscape area with a small fountain, as well as a rock climbing wall in the interior entrance atrium. The garage was tucked below and accessed from the side to keep the doors largely out of view, and a large movie room was also integrated on the lowest level. The clients requested natural and warm materials, which lead to exposing the concrete floors throughout the interior and the use of corten rusting steel panels on the exterior of the lower plinths and wood soffits at the roof and underside of the upper floor.

This artistic and design-forward family approached us at the beginning of the pandemic with a design prompt to blend their love of midcentury modern design with their Caribbean roots. With her parents originating from Trinidad & Tobago and his parents from Jamaica, they wanted their home to be an authentic representation of their heritage, with a midcentury modern twist. We found inspiration from a colorful Trinidad & Tobago tourism poster that they already owned and carried the tropical colors throughout the house — rich blues in the main bathroom, deep greens and oranges in the powder bathroom, mustard yellow in the dining room and guest bathroom, and sage green in the kitchen. This project was featured on Dwell in January 2022.
