Many of the homes here in Denver are laid out in such a way that the kitchen actually faces the front of the home and the windows look into the yard. This can create an issue of privacy for occupants. Stained glass can prevent passersby from looking into your home and make a more comfortable environment for your kitchen. This contemporary style window was designed to match the geometrical shapes in the kitchen.

The homeowners enjoy sitting on their side porch and wanted privacy from passersby. KnockOut Roses along the sidewalk are backed by Forsythia for early spring interest and Nellie R. Stevens Hollies for behind them. From the porch, Nandinas grow in front on the Hollies while the grand Lagerstroemia creates a dark pink cloud of summer blossoms. An attractive small planting along a city sidewalk with lots of summer color and quite a variation of foliage to catch the eye of passersby. The Stowes White Pine anchors the bed along with the small sandstone pieces, which provide a backdrop for the annuals. The roses and the iris provide season long color.

In the front yard, one of Southview's landscape architects designed a welcoming courtyard/front entry. Just large enough for a table, a couple of chairs, a small fountain, and flowers, the courtyard is separated from the street by a low mortared limestone wall. The space hints at privacy but invites the neighbors in for conversation and evening refreshments.

This pair of matching stained glass windows was added to the dining room of this home to create a more private, exclusive feeling. The plain glass that had previously been in the windows allowed passersby on the side of the road to see into the home. The textured and frosted appearance of this glass added a higher level of privacy for the space. That way, family dinners would be more relaxed and intimate.

Rather than starting with an outcome in mind, this 1,400 square foot residence began from a polemic place - exploring shared conviction regarding the concentrated power of living with a smaller footprint. From the gabled silhouette to passive ventilation, the home captures the nostalgia for the past with the sustainable practices of the future. While the exterior materials contrast a calm, minimal palette with the sleek lines of the gabled silhouette, the interior spaces embody a playful, artistic spirit. From the hand painted De Gournay wallpaper in the master bath to the rugged texture of the over-grouted limestone and Portuguese cobblestones, the home is an experience that encapsulates the unexpected and the timeless.

This mural includes three 4 x 8 foot panels. The mural depicts a historic building in downtown Grand Rapids and shows passersby reflected in the window. Two homeless children stand in an open door and look directly at the viewer. The mural was created to bring attention to the many homeless children living in abandoned buildings in our neighborhoods.

The old tea roses in front of this colonial era Cape Cod home were looking a bit tired, and I suspect this "The Fairy" shrub rose is actually closer to what might have been originally planted in this location. With small compound blooms and low size it is perfectly in scale with the compact fence and yard, and cheers passersby on their way to the beach in early to mid summer! Easy to grow as low shrub or trained on small fence/ trellis. Plant in sun, in well drained soil. Hardy to zone 5 or colder if happy, grown on it's own root stock to if frosted let it come back.

The wrought iron fence that separates the front garden from the sidewalk is softened by glorious California Morning Glory, which should be distinguished from the highly invasive African Morning Glory often seen in LA gardens.
