Homeowner Ann Hall is dedicated to her front yard garden, always wanting to make a splash with color. With the front of the home facing south, the sun and warmth make it ideal for her flowering vision. “I wanted to make the front of the home something visually stimulating from the road and passersby,” said Hall of her design vision. In addition to the flowerbeds, the home entry is flanked by low brick feature walls, which serve as a backdrop for the flower beds as well as the perfect place for her two stunning large urns, which are brimming with flowers. As they grow, fruit trees at the driveway's edge enhance the privacy provided by the neighbor's hedge. They are fed by a graywater system that reclaims water from the laundry. Their location makes it easy for the on-the-go family to take a snack for the road or to offer fruit to passersby.

Sidelights and transoms are a smart and interesting way to make your front room brighter. We replaced the plain glass with custom stained glass sidelights to provide their family with privacy. This clear glass design allows for versatility when it comes to decorating their entryway.

The Center has a new co-working space to support creatives and makers as they incubate and grow their ideas. Roots First designed a lush collection of indoor plantings for the new space to provide an organic complement to the artisan-made furniture and custom lighting installations. The project also included a collection of small potted pollinator 'pocket meadows' that flank the entrance of the building to greet passersby and visitors. Instead of choosing from the typical palette of ornamental evergreens and annuals, we decide to design 'pocket-meadows' for the small exterior planters. The collection of plants not only provides a moment of surprise but will also help to feed and nourish our city-dwelling pollinators in the spring.

The essential importance of connecting a building to its landscape—both visually and physically— is an underlying philosophy in all of my work. This concept is reflected in my garden by the way in which windows and french doors link both the master bedroom and the studio to the private deck that is nestled between them. The notion is further reinforced by the flowering vine-covered trellis that screens the deck from an adjacent property, and by broad steps that lead from the deck to the patio and shade garden below. Overarching birch limbs provide shade and frame views of the valley to the east, while a border of various dense shrubs shields this tiny urban sanctuary from passersby.
