Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed the low-slung Gainsburg House in 1946 in the spirit of his father’s Usonian House prototypes of the 1930s. The new owners sought to reverse years of insensitive alterations while including a new kitchen, dining and family rooms, updated bathrooms, lighting and finishes, with accommodation for contemporary art display. The house was conceived as one area within an overall site geometry and the exterior can be seen from all interior angles and spaces. Our new palette compliments the original finishes and reinforces the existing geometry, enhancing a rhythm that moves throughout the house and engages the landscape in a continuous spatial composition. Duck Crossing is a mini compound built over time for our family in Palmetto Bluff, Bluffton, SC. We began with the small one story guest cottage, added the carriage house for our daughters and then, as we determined we needed one gathering space for friends and family, the main house. The challenge was to build a light and bright home that would take full advantage of the lake and preserve views and have enough room for everyone to congregate.
We decided to build an upside down/reverse floorplan home, where the main living areas are on the 2nd floor. We built one great room, encompassing kitchen, dining, living, deck and design studio - added tons of windows and an open staircase, vaulted the ceilings, painted everything white and did whatever else we could to make the small space feel open and welcoming - we think we accomplished this, and then some. The kitchen appliances are behind doors, the island is great for serving and gathering, the tv is hidden - all attention is to the view. When everyone needs their separate space, there are 2 bedrooms below and then additional sleeping, bathing and eating spaces in the cottage and carriage house - it is all just perfect!

The multi-purpose furniture transforms the compact space for different uses. The coffee table is on casters which is used for dining and storage. The side table tucks under sofa. The sofa is also a guest bed and storage below. Photo: Eileen Descallar Ringwald

With a grand total of 1,247 square feet of living space, the Lincoln Deck House was designed to efficiently utilize every bit of its floor plan. This home features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a two-car detached garage and boasts an impressive great room, whose soaring ceilings and walls of glass welcome the outside in to make the space feel one with nature.

Entry is now crisply defined with a surround of fenced walls with an arched metal door repeating the home's architecture, The old porch support columns were reclad to create a grander entry. A lit address light was added, smooth new concrete walk, and welcoming plantings greet guests. The old maple tree has been well-pruned to allow more light into the entry. Plants are bright and have four seasons interest. The red fence will be painted matching black soon. The new entry was poured to meet the angle of the stair risers and the city sidewalk. The existing exposed aggregate concrete retaining walls were skimmed and painted to mimic the stucco finish of the house. The iron fencing will be all black.
All now appears to be original to the home's era.
