Gut renovation of a triplex apartment in New York city meat packing area. In this project, we identified the challenge of renovating a triplex as finding a way to integrate the stairs, so as to not take up the entire width of a narrow house, as well as to minimize the feeling of constantly having to run up and down to connect floors. This twelve-foot-wide townhouse consists of a cellar living room, a master bedroom suite on the upper floor, and a kitchen and dining area on the entry level. In trying to weave together these different floors, the aim of the project was to transform the stairs and steps into a fluid space that combines transition and rest. The steps were designed to be integrated with the architecture, cantilevering from the wall and almost disappearing. The living room on the ground plane folds into the garden through steps and a full-window wall, effectively extending the garden into the living room. From the garden to the entry level, the stairs were transformed into a platform and space for meditation within the open-space living room, dining room and kitchen. The introduction of a skylight midway through the length of the triplex permits natural light to flow to the back of the home, blending into the natural light coming in through the window facing the garden. The skylight also revealed a view of the trees hanging over the townhouse, framing the master bedroom suite from above and extending down with a view towards the garden

Viewed from the right angle platform mid-way up the ramp one can appreciate the curb appeal that brings you all the way to the front door. It adds distinction to the bay window making it a focal point as you approach. Again, the accent lighting is simple but effective regardless your level of ability.

orrowing from the image of the platform tent, two seasonal, guest cottages share a linear cedar deck and are grouped in dialogue marking a clearing in the forest. Conceived as a summer retreat for guests of a nearby residence, each cottage is houses distinct yet supporting functions. At the end of the main deck axis sits the larger of the two structures, accommodating a small kitchen, bath, living area and sleeping loft. The smaller structure contains a screened porch on the lower level and a children’s bunkhouse on the upper level. Sharply pitched gabled forms are devoid of ornament and local white cedar will weather over time to a silver gray without the need for paint or stain. The main level of each building is punctuated by large sliding doors which open and effectively link the interior spaces to the decks and forest immediately adjacent. The opening and closing of these small follies and their large apertures reference their seasonal use and protect the interiors during the winter months. A whitewashed interior celebrates the simple stick frame construction and is sheathed in locally milled spruce boarding boards whose imperfections enhance the informal nature of the gathering spaces. Industrial light fixtures, simple hardware and humble materials create a relaxed environment where sitting on the deck and gathering with friends take center stage.

This is the pool of precision - one big math problem that sparkles with water, glass tile, and fire. The primary view from the front door straight through the back door is across the widest part of the pool to the fire and water feature. The other 2 views from the dining and family room had focal points lined up with the lines of sight. The gushers were lined up on both lines of sight. One of the challenges was the required diving board for the five boys in the house. So the diving board was hidden in the raised wall with stone matching the house. Spill edges were incorporated in all the raised walls to create a subtle waterfall for sound and visual effect. All the elements had to line up with sightlines of the doors and windows so the patio pattern would then keep its precision as well. The details were in the materials, color, pattern, and the combination of materials. The blue fire glass matches the glass waterline and veneer. Subway detail carried through paving detail, patio cap, to travertine pattern and glass tile pattern. The tumbled Travertine was used on the patio and coping and the deck was patterned to match in color and texture. This kept the monochrome look. The dwarf mondo grass was incorporated in the patio to create a more organic setting and blend with the home's rustic contemporary feel. Project designed by Mike Farley

Wine Cellar Innovations launched this series after observing the growing trend towards more contemporary wine cellar designs. The series was carefully developed in order to appeal to the most discerning wine collector. The original design involves wood bottle supports. These are installed within platforms, ranging from the ceiling to the floor. The design for this project also reflects the cable racking system that WCI introduced just a few years back. It’s a minimalist but unique way to showcase your collection! We decided to bring it up a notch by offering the bottle supports in acrylic. Since acrylic is almost as transparent as glass, the effect is even more dramatic. The contemporary vibe is even more enhanced in this project with the use of black metal trim along with acrylic and glass. You might also be wondering how the client can reach the bottles given the insane floor-to-ceiling height of the racking assembly. Surprise, surprise! There’s actually an elevator at the bottom that allows the client to reach up to the highest bottle level.
