The chance to build a lakeside weekend home in rural NC provided this Chapel Hill family with an opportunity to ditch convention and think outside the box. For instance, we traded the traditional boat dock with what's become known as the "party dock"… a floating lounge of sorts, complete with wet bar, TV, swimmer's platform, and plenty of spots for watching the water fun. Inside, we turned one bedroom into a gym with climbing wall - and dropped the idea of a dining room, in favor of a deep upholstered niche and shuffleboard table. Outdoor drapery helped blur the lines between indoor spaces and exterior porches filled with upholstery, swings, and places for lazy napping. And after the sun goes down....smores, anyone? SITE The house is located in Seawatch, a residential development in Seagrove Beach, FL. It is a long and narrow beachfront lot on the Gulf of Mexico, A 30' high sandy cliff meets with the Gulf shore on the lot’s southern edge. A thick layer of sea grasses protects the dunes that create this cliff, helping to prevent erosion and provide a green platform upon which the house sits. PROJECT Two distinct spaces orchestrate the layout of this house. An insular protected courtyard occupies the center of the composition. In contrast, the beach face is comprised of a Living Area, Master Bedroom and Roof Terrace that unfold to the Gulf. The first floor is accessed by a loggia that runs along side the Courtyard. Two guest bedrooms on the south and east, the Garage to the north and a garden wall to the west line the Courtyard. Entry to the main house is by way of a tight enclosed Entry Hall that opens to the curved wall, which addresses the Gulf. Tall slender slots of glass puncture the massive concrete wall of the Living Area. The second floor consists of the Master Bedroom and Study. The massive south wall in the bedroom is articulated as a long horizontal slot, contrasting the vertical windows below. A two-level roof terrace, partly in shade, partly in the sun tops the house. It is here on the Roof Terrace that the two worlds of the enclosed Courtyard and the expansive horizon of the Gulf are experienced. Photo by: Jack Gardner

This farmhouse style home was already lovely and inviting. We just added some finishing touches in the kitchen and expanded and enhanced the basement. In the kitchen we enlarged the center island so that it is now five-feet-wide. We rebuilt the sides, added the cross-back, “x”, design to each end and installed new fixtures. We also installed new counters and painted all the cabinetry. Already the center of the home’s everyday living and entertaining, there’s now even more space for gathering. We expanded the already finished basement to include a main room with kitchenet, a multi-purpose/guestroom with a murphy bed, full bathroom, and a home theatre. The COREtec vinyl flooring is waterproof and strong enough to take the beating of everyday use. In the main room, the ship lap walls and farmhouse lantern lighting coordinates beautifully with the vintage farmhouse tuxedo bathroom. Who needs to go out to the movies with a home theatre like this one? With tiered seating for six, featuring reclining chair on platforms, tray ceiling lighting and theatre sconces, this is the perfect spot for family movie night! The Ipe deck that we constructed is a perfect platform for outdoor yoga. The solid hardwood surface provides an ideal balance of stability and cushioning, allowing the practitioner to be comfortable while performing their postures. The water feature adds even more tranquillity to this space, creating a peaceful environment in which to practice yoga. We also created a set of concrete retaining walls on the south side of the yard. These walls help to raise and extend the available outdoor living space, allowing for more activities in this space than ever before. The durable construction of these walls will ensure that they remain strong and resilient for years to come. Overall, the combination of Ipe decking and concrete retaining walls has given this outdoor space a completely new look and feel. It is now an inviting area in which to practice yoga, entertain guests, or just spend time with family and friends. We are proud of the transformation we have been able to bring about, and hope that our clients can enjoy their enhanced outdoor living space for years to come.

First Place in the Residential New Construction Under 3,500 Sq. Ft. Category of the 2016 ASID Texas Dallas Design Community Design Ovation Awards The wife's style is country chic and the husband is into industrial modern. My goal was to incorporate as many of the existing furnishings as possible and add new ones to bridge the gab between the couples design styles. New pieces allowed us to choose modern shapes, yet cover them in more traditional fabrics. The taupe sofa in the living room and dining table chairs fit the bill perfectly. The husband requested a platform bed in the master bedroom so we chose one with a camel back style headboard. Additionally, the night stands acted in the opposite; traditional in style, yet contemporary in finish. It provides a wonderful balance and juxtaposition to the room. The living room fireplace was inspired by a photo from Houzz. It's an absolute joy to create spaces for my clients to love and love their family in.
