Our client wanted an outdoor living space for her Border Collies and rescued cats. We used her existing patio and gave it a good power washing, fresh paint and we brought in Rough Sawn Redwood to create the fence and cat walks. We also added the trellis to support her healthy plants that would provide shade during the hotter months and bring several hummingbirds to home. PC: Aaron Gilless

This beautifully renovated St. Louis home blends historic charm with modern elegance, creating a luxurious, welcoming space. Thoughtful design preserves its original architecture while adding contemporary sophistication. This beautiful and functional laundry room boasts ample storage, convenient drying racks, and a stunning wall mural that adds a touch of elegance and visual interest to the space.

Located in the Houston Heights, the Waverly Residence is a modern home on an established street of two story homes boasting front porch typologies. The family’s desire for privacy resulted in a porch that rotates to internalize most of its function while still addressing the street. For this active family, yard activity and it’s visibility from within the home emerged as a priority for approaching the building’s relationship to the lot. Justifying the building mass to the Northern half of the site reinforces the scale of the design to the surrounding buildings and creates a large southern yard dedicated to play and brisket (is a Texas house a house without a barbeque?). The ground floor is clad in metal panel and a wood rainscreen that peels away from the structure to become both a fence and an entry threshold, blending the registration between the yard's privacy enclosure and the building skin. Variable width fiber-cement siding clads the second floor as a nod to the neighborhood vernacular. The pool and outdoor kitchen sit at the center of the yard, forming an island that divides the open play from private vehicular access at the alley. Shifted volumes delineate private space from the open public areas. The second floor extends over the public entryway to create a covered procession with cascading steps into the southern yard that traverses the length of the living spaces. The public program expands beyond the building enclosure to encompass the yard and living spaces. A horizontal shift in the ground floor volume produces both a private courtyard away from the lively public spaces and exterior delineation between private vehicular access and public entry. Within the open, ground floor plan, a change in elevation indicates the boundary between private and public space. Custom millwork provides ample storage for the young family. Playful patterns of enclosed storage with contrasting display boxes creates a cohesive millwork language throughout the home.

THEME The theme in this space is defined by the design and flow of the rest of this beautiful contemporary home. They needed the space to blend with the home while still providing the youngest family members with all the enjoyment of a dedicated play room. FOCUS The focus of this space changes with the configuration of the modular pieces around the room. One configuration could put focus on the television for movie night, another could create a stage for a musical performance, while another could close off the kids play area all together keeping the focus on adult conversation. Every configuration provides focus on the activity or plans for that moment. STORAGE Each of the modular pieces includes multiple storage options. The multimedia section ensures that all electronic equipment and remote devices have a dedicated home no matter where the section is placed. The large dedicated storage unit provides open blocks that can be filled with baskets of toys or books while creating the perfect wall in any configuration. The magnetic section allows for display of artwork or calendars while the lower box provides closed storage and a cushioned seating area. GROWTH These modular pieces will always be a useful and functional addition to this space providing the family with endless configuration options ensuring that the space will mature with the family. SAFETY Safety is always a concern and modular pieces require added attention to stability and security to ensure that they will provide the desired flexible functionality along with the safety of built in elements. Custom made brackets lock the sections together at multiple points to keep them linked once placed and the rolling castors under each section also lock into place to ensure that they will not continue to move across the floor.

Our La Cañada studio designed this lovely home, keeping with the fun, cheerful personalities of the homeowner. The entry runner from Annie Selke is the perfect introduction to the house and its playful palette, adding a welcoming appeal. In the dining room, a beautiful, iconic Schumacher wallpaper was one of our happy finishes whose vines and garden colors begged for more vibrant colors to complement it. So we added bold green color to the trims, doors, and windows, enhancing the playful appeal. In the family room, we used a soft palette with pale blue, soft grays, and warm corals, reminiscent of pastel house palettes and crisp white trim that reflects the turquoise waters and white sandy beaches of Bermuda! The formal living room looks elegant and sophisticated, with beautiful furniture in soft blue and pastel green. The curtains nicely complement the space, and the gorgeous wooden center table anchors the space beautifully. In the kitchen, we added a custom-built, happy blue island that sits beneath the house’s namesake fabric, Hydrangea Heaven. ---Project designed by Courtney Thomas Design in La Cañada. The newly design craft space serves as a great place to create art, study with two desks, a large sink and cabinetry for clean up and walls dedicated to hanging new masterpieces by the children in the family. The goal of this extensive remodel was to bring a home that was distinctly 80s into the present. Our clients were an active family with three rambunctious, growing boys. Durability and practicality were high priorities. The homeowners wanted to create a space where both adults and children were at home, and that included feminine touches for Mom. We knew they’d need storage and space to play, so we transformed the formal dining room into a dedicated playroom with plenty of built-ins for toys, puzzles, books, and board games. We took two impractical spaces and removed the center wall, creating a bunk room that feels fort-like and imaginative. For the parents, we created a haven in their primary suite with a proper sitting area surrounding a fireplace as well as a shower/bath wet room. New front doors and window treatments were installed to enhance the natural light and complement the much-improved aesthetic.
