Inspiration for a transitional home design remodel in Los Angeles

Built in 1951, this sprawling ranch style home has plenty of room for a large family, but the basement was vintage 50’s, with dark wood paneling and poor lighting. One redeeming feature was a curved bar, with multi-colored glass block lighting in the foot rest, wood paneling surround, and a red-orange laminate top. If one thing was to be saved, this was it.
Castle designed an open family, media & game room with a dining area near the vintage bar and an additional bedroom. Mid-century modern cabinetry was custom made to provide an open partition between the family and game rooms, as well as needed storage and display for family photos and mementos.
The enclosed, dark stairwell was opened to the new family space and a custom steel & cable railing system was installed. Lots of new lighting brings a bright, welcoming feel to the space. Now, the entire family can share and enjoy a part of the house that was previously uninviting and underused.

Big changes at this Wayne Pa kitchen remodel. This homes original kitchen was tight and poorly designed for the space. We removed a wall between the kitchen and an adjoining sitting room as well as a ton of inefficient framed pantries and closets to open up the space. We installed a new 7 ½’ window overlooking the backyard patio and pool as well as bringing great natural light into the space. With a family of 5 this customer needed lots of storage and fridge space. We designed the new kitchen with this in mind. The Fabuwood cabinetry in the Galaxy Frost door style gives this kitchen a clean bright feel and all the pantries and 2 fridges give the customer all the storage they could dream of. The flooring was replaced throughout the first floor and kitchen with kid and lifestyle friendly Coretec waterproof luxury vinyl which will hold up to plenty of wet feet from the backyard pool. The steel grey granite with a leathered finish has a smooth textured feel and coordinates well with the flooring and other finishes. The tile backsplash was installed in a herring bone pattern adds to this awesome new look. Everything was expertly installed by lead carpenters Steve McHenry and Rick Morro. What a great project with happy homeowners.

Silver Buffaloberry is one of my go-to plants for edges and really tough dry places. Its a native to Colorado and has beautiful silvery leaves. It is one of the first plants to flower in the spring, even when the nights are freezing. As the bees adventure out, they really appreciate the Buffaloberry. It also forms a relationship with beneficial bacteria in its roots which 'fix' nitrogen in the soil, allowing it to thrive in poor dry soils. Its toughness and nitrogen fixing ability make it a perfect 'pioneer' to increase soil fertility and open the way for more tender and sensitive plants. Additionally its berries are edible and hang on the branches from mid summer until late fall. The berries are astringent and slightly soapy, definitely not a choice sweet berry, but quite interesting and a joy for birds in the fall and winter.

This simple and elegant master bedroom combines modern style with touches of refined traditional elements to create the perfect contemporary retreat for these busy parents of three. Oodles of storage, bold colourful prints, paired with classic tonal whites throughout make this a beautifully functional master bedroom. The low-profile modern bedframe allows the king size bed to feel inviting, but without overpowering the space, while the large drapery panels add interest, soften the angular hard edges of remaining furniture, and provide much needed privacy from the neighbours.
