Inspiration for an industrial bedroom remodel in New York

This second home outside of Sebastopol, CA is perched on a ridge with sweeping views of Bodega Bay. The stunning scale of this environment also provides challenges to creating the feeling of shelter - making the house a home. Dakin approached this project with sight lines in mind, placing a large boulder so that it anchors a “near” view from inside the home to balance vastness of the ridge and ocean beyond. This attention to the owner’s perspective is also expressed through a layering of climate appropriate plants and California natives seen through the kitchen window. California evergreens such as camellias, silk tassels and madrones harmonize with existing sequoias, redwood groves and a wildflower meadow on site. The diversity of this climate zone is on display in this project, which also features succulents, Douglas fir and an olive grove. In addition to ocean weather, populations of gopher and deer on site made it necessary for Dakin to protect plant roots with baskets and select plant species resistant to deer.

Lake Burton gets its named from the town of Burton, which was the second largest town in Rabun County with a population of approximately 200 but now lies below the lake's surface. The town (and the lake) was named after local prominent citizen Jeremiah Burton and was situated along the road from Clayton, Georgia to the Nacoochee Valley. Andrew Jackson Ritchie served as the postmaster for the area for several years. Gold was first discovered in Rabun County where Dicks Creek and the Tallulah River come together and was the reason for the town's founding in the early 1800s. The Lake Burton Fish Hatchery and Moccasin Creek State Park are located on the western side of the lake. Lake Burton is home to several species of fish, including Spotted Bass, Largemouth Bass, White Bass, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Redear Sunfish, White Catfish, Walleye, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Yellow Perch. With the north wall fo the home closed off for insulation efficiency, north facing skylights were added to increase the amount of natural light to the connective space. A small desk space at the top of the stairs populates an otherwise efficient space, and an open void to the stairwell keeps an open and comfortable feeling to the upper hall. Naturally finished wide plank oak hardwood maintains a light and contemporary feel, while a vaulted ceiling provides an increase to the feeling of space to the upper bedrooms and evokes a traditional form.

Serpentine dry stacked granite walls celebrate regional materials while transforming this sloping yard into a multilevel extension of home. It features a secluded fire pit that looks out over a striking view of the stormwater pond below and mountains in the distance, activated by the occasional glimpse of local wildlife populations including bald eagles and deer. By Nancy Erdmann | Photography by Steve Thompson For someone who loves to garden and has done so in many areas of the U.S., taking on the challenge of a rocky, boulder-strewn hillside lot in the Sonoran Desert is something that Carey Bertsch relishes. “I was born in Scotland but grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. My husband, Robin, is from Indiana. We have always loved everything about the Southwest. The sunny, arid climate; the lifestyle; the flora; the fauna—they all resonate with us,” she remarks. As such, the couple, who are based in Colorado, decided to purchase a part-time residence in Arizona. They found a Santa Fe Territorial-style home that’s tucked into the base of a steep slope in North Scottsdale’s Estancia community. Populated with natural boulder outcroppings, the property’s landscape was rudimentary at best. “But we saw the potential and knew it could be so much more,” recalls Carey. She and her husband lived in the house for several years before making any major changes; they recently completed a total exterior remodel.

The bathroom is textured with grey tiles on all surfaces. As a result, the white fixtures and objects that populate the space are highlighted, creating a simple yet effective design.

These Lino Lakes homeowners decided it was time to update their lake home. The local woodpecker population was not happy with Craftsman's Choice when we pulled off the existing cedar siding and replaced it with James Hardie fiber cement siding. We installed 6" Timberbark lap siding, Monterey Taupe straight edge shakes, with cobblestone trim. We also made them custom James Hardie shutters with a pine tree cutout.

One of McKinley Burkart’s most aesthetically traditional projects, the Island Residence is a 15,000 square foot house made of pavilions and low bridges, completely surrounded by water. McKinley Burkart worked closely with landscape architects to design a residence that is fully integrated with its site. Water flows from a small fountain and trickles down, flowing throughout the site under glass bridges featuring the koi fish that populate the stream. The house implements Asian planning principles of connecting indoor and outdoor space using pavilions and bridges yet brings forth a West Coast, heavy timber aesthetic throughout the whole residence.

It has a normal surface area of 71 acres and depths of over 60 feet. It is now owned by Polk County and managed by the Copper Basin Utility District as an area water supply. Swimming and boating is allowed, however, the use of gasoline powered boat motors is prohibited Campbell Cove Lake Dam is of earthen construction. The core is homogeneous, earth. The foundation is soil, rock. Its height is 77 feet with a length of 402 feet. Its capacity is 2430 acre feet. Normal storage is 1394 acre feet. It drains an area of 1.84 square miles. The lake was originally stocked by the Tennessee Game and Fish Commission with large mouth bass, shell crackers, bluegill and channel catfish; the lake also has a healthy population of perch and crappie. Persons fishing must have a valid TN. fishing license. There is a public boat launching area available for use year round.

A tired 80’s kitchen remodel was more than the new owner of this home could tolerate. Adjacent to it was a well lit reading room, and an idea was sparked. A new layout and design was conceived. Next, reclaimed wood from an old cabin was then collected to become the raw materials for the cabinetry and flooring. The cabinetry wood was milled and painted, the flooring was tooled just enough to show a century’s worth of weathered paint and still be an appropriate surface. High end appliances on the perimeter of the room and the main workspace in the center of the room allow for the many original windows with their low sills to remain. Finishing touches include the select primitive cabinets and a well populated hanging cast iron rack. The kitchen opens to a brick paved patio overlooking a deep backyard. The space that the old kitchen occupied is now an informal reading/family space.

The homeowners of this transitional contemporary home near Albany, Vermont, are avid bird watchers. When building their new home near the Green Mountains, they wanted windows and doors that provided natural views while also helping to protect the local bird population. The homeowners used bird-friendly, bird-strike-deterring glass to meet both of these goals. The homeowners used the services of the Marvin at 7 Tide Brand Experience Center in Boston, Massachusetts, to help curate the window and door choices for their project, including confirming their desire to use bird-friendly glass in Marvin Ultimate collection windows and exterior doors. To complete their home, they selected interior doors from TruStile.

Gracious home with a large, poorly appointed kitchen. Large closets occupied most of one wall, and basic white cabinets and countertops provided an uninteresting but workable space. The kitchen had none of the current upgrades and far less cabinet and countertop than the space could accommodate. We removed the closets and filled the kitchen with rich stained cabinets topped with crown molding. Light quartz counters with natural stone backsplash and under cabinet lighting create an outstanding work space. The empty walls are populated with cabinets, countertop, and pantries. A much larger island with seating and pendant lighting is the center piece of this warm, elegant, beautifully appointed kitchen.
