To provide a gradual transition for the family from their home, situated on a high plateau, to the brook and pool below, we designed numerous patios and decks at multiple levels. The house features large, divided light arched windows. Throughout the first floor, we created lit vaulted ceilings that give the living areas a spacious, open quality. A wide central hallway forms the spine of the house, opening onto a dining room, with columns that support a curved yoke-shaped header that is repeated in the entrance gate on the grounds. Renovations were scheduled in four precisely planned construction phases that allowed the family to continue living in the house during the building process. This elegant, yet informal home, in its serene setting, is the product of Morpurgo Architects’ seamless union of the house and the site.

The existing layout posed peculiar challenges, with an "L" shaped configuration and a cramped shower area. Strikingly, the absence of windows pushed us to explore inventive design concepts.

The low budget, family house project posed a challenge of conveniently arranging multiple rooms in small area. Pre-reconstruction edges of the walls were toned down, in order to conform to the new, minimalistic aesthetics and letting two colors prevail in the interior was also the part of the concept. The white walls and the large mirrors make the space appear sizable. The wooden components of the interior bring an unifying ambience into play. The technical lighting illuminates the rooms without distracting the eye. Since the climate didn't allow for that, we built the home with 12” thick super insulated walls with quality windows that frame the amazing views, which achieved the desired cozier feel. A big overhang was added on the west to provide some outside covered space which protects the living room from the late sun until it goes down behind the mountain across the way. The client opted to install a ground source heat pump to offset heating and cooling costs, as well as a soapstone masonry heater to beat the winter chill. Exterior materials (Cement board products and metal roof) were chosen for low maintenance properties and fire resistance in this very remote location. A guesthouse/office was located just far enough away for privacy and oriented to capture the up valley views and the view across the drainage, from the office space on the second story, where windows on three sides of the dormer make you feel like you are outside.

The front door sits smack dab in the middle of the room, dividing the space in two. This family of five needed a larger living room and couldn't figure out how to balance the space. We created lines for the eye to follow that would open this home up and really showcase the amazing African artifacts hidden throughout. The husband is an avid collector of Sub-Saharan art and we used his passion as inspiration for the decor. A historic home and ancient artifacts? We needed to throw in a modern twist to get this home up-to-date. We incorporated pops of color and fun, bold prints to bring out the home's wild side. A houndstooth rug and new display case did just the trick. The wife prefers midcentury modern decor so we incorporated a fun lamp and these awesome lounge chairs from Houzz to incorporate her style into the space.
