Simply Home DecoratingThis beautiful North Vancouver home belongs to a nature-loving and health-conscious couple, Emma and Vince (names changed), their two young children, and their dog, Jasper. When they contacted us about renovating and furnishing their kitchen and family room, we walked in and saw a world of potential waiting to be uncovered.
Before: Larkhall Crescent Home:
Like many original North Vancouver homes, the interior was definitely dated. We encountered late ‘80s finishes in powder pink and teal green, old carpet, and a kitchen that wasn’t maximized to suit this family’s modern-day lifestyle. However, the size of the rooms offered us a ton of space with which to get creative.
Knowing our clients’ love of cooking, need for work spaces (Emma and Vince both work remotely), and growing family, we developed a design concept that would increase usable space, optimize storage, and create intimacy in this large area. As for the style, we were inspired by their European roots, inventing a new and modern take on “Belgian Farmhouse” style. Now, the home is truly one-of-a-kind.
After: Warm & Cozy Family Room:
Fresh, bright, and comfortable, this living area has been transformed! We started with the fireplace as a focal point, selecting aged brick tiles for added texture and a crisp wood mantle. The taupe-coloured sectional infuses the room with visual warmth and serves the added purpose of separating the family room from the kitchen.
Emma and Vince were also keen on using non-toxic materials in their home, and we were happy to oblige. To meet their needs, we sourced natural wood elements and sought out Canadian-made products - that adhere to high health standards - whenever possible.
Look closer at the elements of this space, and you will find this stunning, honeycomb-patterned rug in earthy gold, beige, and charcoal tones. It’s plush to the touch and full of visual texture that brings this room’s colour palette together. We sourced these two-tone chairs with caning, petrified wood side table, black sconces, and botanical prints in greyscale from local artist, Heather Johnston.
We topped off the space with this dark wood and rattan console that offers storage facing the kitchen and presents an opportunity to display cherished items. The result is a cozy lounging space brimming with comfort and functionality. It’s perfect for enjoying quality family time, or Emma can simply slide the coffee table away to make room for her morning yoga practice.

Moody & Welcoming Kitchen for Healthy Living:
This kitchen looks very different from how it started, right? Though we didn’t touch any walls, the kitchen has almost doubled in usable space! We created a long, extended island with storage, an outlet for small appliances, and seating for comfortable prep, after-school snacking, or mingling among friends.
On the other side of the island, the family has even more storage and an integrated dishwasher within easy reach of the sink, perfect for quick clean-up. From this angle, you can also see the expansive custom Shaker cabinetry in white and the integrated double ovens. These facilitate their cooking experience and gave us the opportunity to add an additional surprise…
A coffee garage station and more hidden storage! Keeping these items located along the perimeter allows them to be accessed by the family or their guests without someone getting under the cook’s feet. These are the little details that make everyday life easier and more enjoyable.
Moving deeper into the kitchen, the seamless induction cooktop topped with a freestanding concealed hood fan commands attention in a soft yet prominent way. The natural wood accent mirrors the fireplace mantle, and the choice of off-black wood-grain cabinets not only continues our black-and-white colour palette but adds a sense of depth and contrast. The corner sink is located to the right and perfectly positioned with a view of their thriving backyard.
To invite more of this family’s character into the space, we mixed metals for interest — matte black, dark pewter, and warm brass — and created open shelves in white oak for their plants and decor. You can also glimpse the tumbled edge of the backsplash tile, which echoes the rustic brick of the fireplace. It adds that farmhouse charm while still feeling timeless and sophisticated.
Last but not least, we designed this dining banquette in the bay window (with integrated bench storage, of course), where the family can share a meal together, the kids can do homework, or Emma and Vince can work and enjoy a change of scenery from their offices. Like the other spaces in the home, it was designed to be beautiful, multi-functional, and long-lasting.

We decided to reconfigure the kitchen, dining room, and family room in order to create an open style floorplan that allows this small home to live up to it’s full potential. An all white kitchen plays host to a hint of color on the island for the perfect amount of personality in this space. Mid-century era light fixtures and dining room table play homage to the home’s roots while still being fresh and new for this young family.

RL Design and BuildThis backyard and pool remodeling project involved a complete transformation of the outdoor space into a sophisticated and functional retreat. The swimming pool was entirely resurfaced with a fresh plaster finish, restoring its vibrant color and smooth texture while improving durability. The pool’s edges were upgraded with elegant bullnose concrete paver coping, providing a rounded, polished finish that blends safety with visual appeal. To address the natural slope of the yard, a dramatic three-tier terrace system was constructed using retaining walls. These terraced levels not only provide structural support but also create defined spaces for planting, seating, and movement. Integrated into the landscape are custom-poured concrete benches, offering permanent, low-maintenance seating areas that match the texture and tone of the surrounding pavers and walls.
An outdoor kitchen was added to maximize the yard’s entertaining potential. Designed for both form and function, it includes built-in appliances and storage framed in matching stone finishes. Above the kitchen, an Alumawood lattice patio cover offers partial shade and a refined architectural touch, combining the appearance of wood with the durability of aluminum. The open lattice design allows dappled sunlight while helping to define the cooking and dining area.
Perimeter enhancements include the installation of decorative wrought iron fencing and a matching gate, adding both security and style to the space. A dark, dated bedroom in El Paso is transformed into a bright, serene retreat with a fresh color palette and modern styling in El Paso Tx.
Before:
This El Paso Tx bedroom featured a deep navy accent wall with a traditional fireplace surround. While the crown molding added character, the dark wall color made the space feel smaller and heavier, limiting its potential as a relaxing retreat.
After:
We completely brightened this El Paso bedroom by painting the fireplace wall and surrounding area a crisp, soft white to open up the space and reflect natural light. The original fireplace surround was preserved, now standing out as a timeless feature. A wall-mounted TV above the fireplace adds modern convenience, while carefully chosen furnishings, warm wood tones, greenery, and a textured area rug create a calming, stylish atmosphere. The result is a peaceful bedroom escape that blends comfort with elegance.
Taylor Dawson DesignsImagine going to visit friends or family and this is where you get to lay your head down at the end of the day! This room had great potential with an existing wall colour and custom cabinet unit that these clients loved. Often people think to get a fresh new look you need to start from scratch, however that is not the case. We upcycled the existing custom cabinet by painting it with a warm white chalk paint AND we think it turned out lovely! For this space we added a single bed with a rattan petal shaped headboard giving this room a whimsical feel. By angling the bed to the door, we were able to create a welcoming environment. What makes this room stand out the most is the unexpected hanging wall rug. Its vibrant colours and subtle pattern are the perfect backdrop for this small space. Hints of brushed gold, small accents and vibrant accent cushions complete this look, making for a quaint guest retreat your guests won’t want to leave.

Jordan Design Build GroupThe owners engaged us to conduct a full house renovation to bring this historic stone mansion back to its former glory. One of the highest priorities was updating the main floor’s more public spaces which serve as the diplomat's primary representation areas where special events are hosted.
Worn wall-to-wall carpet was removed revealing original oak hardwood floors that were sanded and refinished with an Early American stain. Great attention to detail was given to the selection, customization and installation of new drapes, carpets and runners all of which had to complement the home’s existing antique furniture. The striking red runner gives new life to the grand hall and winding staircase and makes quite an impression upon entering the property. New ceilings, medallions, chandeliers and a fresh coat of paint elevate the spaces to their fullest potential. A customized bar was added to an adjoining sunroom that serves as spillover space for formal events and a more intimate setting for casual gatherings.

The brief for this modern coastal home was to create a place where the clients and their children and their families could gather to enjoy all the beauty of living in Southern California. Maximizing the lot was key to unlocking the potential of this property so the decision was made to excavate the entire property to allow natural light and ventilation to circulate through the lower level of the home.
A courtyard with a green wall and olive tree act as the lung for the building as the coastal breeze brings fresh air in and circulates out the old through the courtyard.
The concept for the home was to be living on a deck, so the large expanse of glass doors fold away to allow a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoors and feeling of being out on the deck is felt on the interior. A huge cantilevered beam in the roof allows for corner to completely disappear as the home looks to a beautiful ocean view and Dana Point harbor in the distance. All of the spaces throughout the home have a connection to the outdoors and this creates a light, bright and healthy environment.
Passive design principles were employed to ensure the building is as energy efficient as possible. Solar panels keep the building off the grid and and deep overhangs help in reducing the solar heat gains of the building. Ultimately this home has become a place that the families can all enjoy together as the grand kids create those memories of spending time at the beach.

Mosaik Design & RemodelingThis 1972 NW Contemporary home had great potential from the start with interesting architecture and West Hills Portland location with mature landscaping. The kitchen and powder bath lacked style and needed serious updating. From the cramped layout and closed off feel in the kitchen to heavy texture and original 1970’s décor in the Powder bath, it was time for a change.
The main wall between the kitchen and Family room was removed and the kitchen entry was widened which made the kitchen feel more integrated and brighter. All existing hardwoods and dark 70’s brick in the Entry were replaced with 4” natural white oak hardwoods, which further connected and updated the kitchen and adjacent rooms. The new kitchen layout gave way to a large island and more useful storage and a better flow.
The “Sea Serpent” blue on the island is complemented with the stained Alder and white for a fresh element. Open cubbies in Alder cubbies and white Kanso mosaic tile from Ann Sacks grouted in black all add interest to this warm, clean-lined Scandinavian vibe for this young family.

Michelle Berwick DesignThere are some rooms you design to be current, or trendy, or fresh and new. Then there are Some that are designed to tell a story. This room is a collection of furniture and items that have been in the family for decades. I think all the members get nostalgic when entering this room. The maroon leather chairs from Dads old billiards room. The family portraits with 80s hair dos (which by the way don't ever throw out, who cares if they are a little dated display those bad boys). A rug that has seen at least two generations of babies grow up. All items collected over time. We added in some new drapery/pillows/Romans, some new lighting, and a few new accessories and voila.

UserLight gray walls and ceilings, which are accented with white trim, allow this traditional dining room’s accessories to play to their full potential. The Chinese Chippendale china cabinet is a family heirloom that has been updated with a coat of fresh royal blue paint. The interior is finished with a bright white lacquer, setting off the homeowner’s collection of antique china and blue and white porcelain jars.
The dining table is stained deep espresso and given a high gloss finish. The gold metallic accents of the table provide a touch of glam befitting the crown jewel of the room - a chandelier of clear glass orbs dangling from a gold frame.
A trio of hand painted botanicals can be seen in the foyer, and in the living room beyond the foyer is a purple tone-on-tone floral high-backed chair that stands on a deep violet and charcoal grey over-dyed rug. These tones beckon back to the dining table’s centerpiece of lavender hydrangeas.

When John David Edison Interior Design Inc. was looking for rug originality for a Florida living room featuring a coloured glass collection, we invited them to browse our look book "inspired". Available to all our interiors professionals, this comprises over a hundred designs arising from Creative Matters signature Art Days when we immerse ourselves in fresh inspiration. They spotted potential in concept #019 from the fusion section and from there flowed the creation of this thoroughly modern rug where saturated ocean blues and amethyst become almost transparent when divided by wild sea mist-hued striations.
Jordan Design Build GroupThe owners engaged us to conduct a full house renovation to bring this historic stone mansion back to its former glory. One of the highest priorities was updating the main floor’s more public spaces which serve as the diplomat's primary representation areas where special events are hosted.
Worn wall-to-wall carpet was removed revealing original oak hardwood floors that were sanded and refinished with an Early American stain. Great attention to detail was given to the selection, customization and installation of new drapes, carpets and runners all of which had to complement the home’s existing antique furniture. The striking red runner gives new life to the grand hall and winding staircase and makes quite an impression upon entering the property. New ceilings, medallions, chandeliers and a fresh coat of paint elevate the spaces to their fullest potential. A customized bar was added to an adjoining sunroom that serves as spillover space for formal events and a more intimate setting for casual gatherings.
