This urban townhouse took on new life when it was renovated for a couple relocating from New York City. The owner’s sophisticated taste, cultivated from world travels, paired with the character of the existing home and resulted in a fresh and colorful gem in the heart of the historic downtown.
Extensive approvals from the local Historic District Commission preceded an addition on the rear of the time-honored building and a complete restoration of the exterior. The addition encompasses a first-floor, finished garage with arch doors that open to the gardens, ideal for entertaining. Above the garage accommodates the master bedroom, walk-in closets and a bathroom suite. The exterior restoration allowed the addition of window pediments, shutters with authentic hardware and gaslight features. Pocket gardens surround the townhouse and boast multiple plantings that complement a historic environment.
The interior of the home was restructured to allow for reworking of the main stair. The reconfigured flight can now carry the weight of books and art alongside ascending residents and guests. Amid construction, two previously hidden fireplaces were uncovered. By the end of the renovation, four fireplaces were entirely refurbished and now lend immense aesthetic to interior design.
The interior finishes within the home keep visitors engaged and impressed. From imported Italian tile to contextually historic light switches, the colorful décor is appealing to all senses. Specially painted walls coordinate with furnishings, bookcases and art.

This three-story live/work building accommodates a business and a private residence. The front showroom and reception area features a stair with a custom handrail and veneer brick wall. Moving through the main hall you will find a coffee bar and conference room that precedes a workroom with dark green cabinetry, masonry fireplace, and oversized pub-height work tables. The residence can be accessed on all levels and maintains privacy through the stairwell and elevator shaft. The second level is home to a design studio, private office and large conference room that opens up to a deep balcony with retractable screens. On the residence side, above the garage is a flex space, which is used as a guest apartment for out of town guests and includes a murphy bed, kitchenette and access to a private bath. The third level is the private residence. At the front you will find a balcony, living room with linear fireplace, dining room with banquette seating and kitchen with a custom island and pullout table. Private spaces include a full bathroom and kids room featuring train car inspired bunks and ample storage. The master suite is tucked away to the rear and features dual bathroom vanities, dressing space, a drop down TV in the bedroom ceiling and a closet wall that opens up to an 8x12, his and hers closet. The lower level is part of the private residence and features a home gym and recreation spaces.

White walls create a gallery-like environment for the homeowners’ bold, modern artwork, and midcentury modern furniture fits nicely with the home’s clean lines. Glass-topped tables add to the room’s openness, while a large, gray rug breaks up the pale wood floors and defines the seating area.

My clients had always been inspired by the grand Tudor Revival homes of the early 20th century and commissioned Hull Historical to recreate the authentic custom millwork, paneling and doors for their new Tudor Revival home. Our inspiration came from 2 great English homes, Stan Hywett, a great Tudor Revival home in Ohio, built for the founder of Goodyear Tires. Also, the Woodbine Mansion, built in 1911 for the son of the Pabst Brewing Company. We were fortunate to purchase three rooms of architectural millwork from the woodbine home, which was originally fabricated by the Huber Company of New York. Upon completion of this project, the architectural salvage comprised 15% of the final quantity of paneling installed. The remainder was custom fabricated by Hull Historical at our shop in Fort Worth, TX and installed at the clients home.
The commission, based on historic precedent, constituted antique paneling on the main floor, beamed ceilings and all the doors in the home. The new paneling, including the kitchen cabinetry is made from a combination of new quarter-sawn white oak and antique white oak salvaged from old barns and buildings. All the oak was fumed in an ammonia-filled chamber to produce a cocoa color and deep feel giving the millwork rough character and a timeless look that my client loved.
The millwork also served to give the home a hierarchy, with simple paneling combined with board and batten doors downstairs, then more ornate paneling, with carvings on the main floor. Additionally, the main floor features mostly 8 and 10 panel doors. All woodwork was hand-pegged with oak pegs. Some of the paneling features a unique Mason’s Miter, a historic joinery technique inspired from stone work.

This historically recognized Mid Century modern home, originally designed by Architect Francis Joseph McCarthy in 1949, was remodeled and expanded with a deep appreciation and respect for the original. The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Preservation, the federal standard for were maintained in the design of this project. Key elements of the original home: vertical privacy louvers, floor to ceiling wood window walls, interior and exterior wall finishes, were restored. The additions follow the fundamental formal and spatial language of the original while introducing new materials and detail. Embracing the formal and spatial precedent of the original, the new additions form stacking and shifting ‘L’ shaped plan elements floating above the courtyards. These courtyards enhance the original inside-outside lifestyle desired for this home. Mid Century design features such as louvers, a simple shed roof, an abundance of glass, are highly valued and maintained in the new design.

In this newly constructed Westminster home, the kitchen was designed to complement the home’s traditional architectural framework while elevating the material story through thoughtful, layered additions.
Rather than altering the original cabinetry, we worked with the existing warm oak millwork as the foundation, introducing custom lighting and handcrafted seating to bring depth, texture, and refinement to the space. Sculptural glass pendants provide soft scale and glow above the island, while tailored leather and wood bar seating adds a furniture-quality layer that balances the cabinetry’s warmth.
Natural stone countertops and backsplash surfaces carry subtle movement and tonal variation, grounding the room in organic texture. Brass plumbing and hardware introduce a polished contrast, tying into the metal finishes used throughout the residence and reinforcing material continuity from space to space.
The result is a kitchen that feels integrated and architectural rather than decorative — refined, grounded, and aligned with the home’s classic layout, where craftsmanship and material integrity take precedence over statement.

Old architecture combined with new fresh contemporary art and upholstery, Patti Allen created a great space for her long time friend’s second home. She brought fresh contemporary furniture coupled with current edgy colors to call this Asheville retreat their home. Her clients wanted to work around their love for art and special pieces they have acquired.
The rooms had a great feel because of all the light coming into the room that naturally spotlighted their art to make it the focal point. They also had a lot of natural textures with the brick walls so they brought in several pieces of metal to compliment the industrial feel.
The tufted sofa gave comfort and clean lines. The Vanguard chairs gave another option for upholstery in the room but keeping it in a smaller scale to fit in the room with the other pieces. The pops of yellow and turquoise highlighted the clients desire for color.
They used Elite barstools with stainless steel metal that gave simplicity to show off their beautiful granite.
The dining room table was by Stanley furniture and she used Century upholstered chairs to compliment the living room.
The art deco chair is by Dwell Studios. The Stanton geometric rug helped ground your eye and give definition to the seating areas.
The Master bedroom was by Precedent and the fabric flowed nicely with the wall coverings by Lee Jofa. The nightstands were by Vanguard and she spotlighted fuchsia with the chaise.
The guest room had a wall that worked great with the American Leather sleeper sofa against the brick wall. Their art went great with it.
This was a fun project for Patti because she truly enjoys working with lighter pallets, textured fabric and clean architectural lines with pops of color.
