Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh perspective. This was the case for FGA’s Atherton clients, empty-nesters, who were eager to reimagine their home of many years as they embarked on their next chapter: hosting grandchildren. To start, FGA kept a few outer walls to preserve the home's more expansive footprint, while opening up and reimagining the layout. The new home with a grand entry hall is oriented to highlight the long garden view. Stylistically, the goal was to lend the new home an older aesthetic that suited the surrounding neighborhood - a home that “felt like the oldest house on the block,” in the words of the client. The structure also recalls the iconic style of Bernard Maybeck who designed the husband’s childhood home. FGA studied Maybeck’s methods for intricately layering rafters, outriggers, and brackets to create a sense of familiarity and ruggedness, but modified elements to feel modern and refined. The heavy timber was specially sourced, carefully measured, cut and numbered offsite, and then meticulously reassembled on the premises. The earthy exteriors with bright cedar shingles, deep dark green trim, and textured red brick are balanced with a crisp interior palette. White cerused oak, mustard yellow library-dining millwork, a black marble bar, and copper hardware details are playfully contemporary. Recalling the exterior masonry, a handsome brick fireplace anchors the generous living room and neighboring office. From the living, dining, and kitchen, tall steel and glass French doors open onto a deep porch for easy entertaining and breezy backyard views.

This end of the house consist of one large room housing game tables, seating, media center, TV along with a multi person bathroom and storage for hunting supplies. The premise for the Lakeview was to make it feel like an old hotel that had been refurbished and not be something new. Located in an historic building, you approach through the restaurant and bar on the main floor with the front desk shared with the bar.

The premise for this remodel was to update their cramped white kitchen with an open concept. With the laminate peeling off of the doors and the kitchen lacking functionality, it was up to us to achieve a more flowing space. They decided on using Merillat cabinetry in cherry wood with a Paprika stain, finished on a Bayville door. This combination matched their already gorgeous entertainment center perfectly. To achieve a more aesthetically pleasing space we removed half of the wall that was bordering the hallway. With that, we also had to remove the arch that was separating the hallway with the living room. This opened up the whole room and allowed us to give the homeowners a large peninsula low bar with plenty of overhang to seat 7 guests comfortably. We removed the standard drywall pantry and installed a 8' tall pantry that matched the cabinetry. In the hallway we opted for a classic wine bar set up with an X wine cube above and a wine refrigerator below. Stacked cabinets throughout give the entire area a grandiose feel while also adding much needed storage. Other subtleties included changing the refrigerator and sink locations to attain a kitchen that made sense to the homeowners.

The six foot wide floor-to-ceiling glass wall provides drama with its simplicity. A feature wall was created in the shower to house the plumbing and was kept sleek and simple with natural looking tiles. The barnboard looking floor was inspired by the surrounding barns on the property. The graceful lines of the tub are reflected in the vessel sinks that sit atop the two maple Miralis vanities. A mirrored toe kick was used to create the illusion of suspension while still providing long term structural stability. The wooden ledge above the vanity acts as a landing zone for toothbrushes and makeup which maximizes the space of the shallower vanity. The clean lines of the space draw your eye to the outside and the air and light flows through the bathroom.
