.1. Surface Protection:
Begin by carefully protecting all sensitive areas surrounding the marble surfaces to prevent any unintended damage during the restoration process. This may involve covering adjacent surfaces, walls, or fixtures.
2. Grinding to Remove Stains & Scratches:
Employ precision grinding techniques to address stains and scratches on the marble surface. This step involves the use of specialized tools and abrasives to level the surface and eliminate imperfections.
3. Polishing to a High Sheen:
Follow the grinding phase with a meticulous polishing process. Utilize progressively finer polishing compounds and pads to enhance the marble's natural shine, achieving a high-gloss finish. This step not only minimizes scratches but also brings out the inherent beauty of the stone.
4. Sealing with 2 Coats of Sealer:
Seal the restored marble surfaces with two coats of high-quality sealer. The sealer creates a protective barrier, guarding against future stains and damage. Ensure even and thorough coverage to maximize the effectiveness of the sealer.
This straightforward process outlines key steps to rejuvenate marble surfaces, addressing both aesthetic and protective aspects. It's a systematic approach that combines precision in addressing imperfections with a focus on enhancing the overall appearance of the marble.

Baylen is 9 years old and was diagnosed at age 6 with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in October 2020, in the middle of the pandemic. DMD is a rare disease caused by a genetic mutation that prevents the body from producing a protein called Dystrophin, to which there is currently no cure. In lieu of Dystrophin, his muscles are slowly being encompassed with scar tissue. Without Dystrophin the scar tissue will eventually take over his muscles until they cannot perform adequately for his body.
Since his diagnosis, he has taken to lego building and gaming, which are activities he can participate in without causing any damage to his muscles. Unfortunately the game room in his house is located upstairs while his room is located downstairs making it difficult for him to participate in these activities without assistance or pain from walking up the stairs.
One of the biggest issues is at night, when his legs are in pain, he ends up in his parents room which prevents anyone from getting a restful night's sleep. A room where he feels comfortable and safe would greatly help both him and his parents. It would also be beneficial for his room to have more space for lego building and play video games without having to walk up the stairs.

This vacation home in Falmouth, MA needed lots of TLC inside and out when the family bought it. One of the first projects they completed was replacing the roof. Being by the ocean, it was important that this roof could withstand snow, driving rain, temperature fluctuations and wind gusts up to 130mph – so they chose a GAF Timberline HD roofing system. We completely removed the old roof and started fresh by inspecting deck boards for any rot or insect damage. The boards are then re-nailed before applying underlayment to the whole roof deck. GAF Cobra Ridge Vent, ice and water shield, and drip edge – our roofing systems prevent ice dams and water intrusion from driving rain. A properly vented roof allows air to circulate in the attic to maintain both a constant temperature and prevents excessive moisture buildup.

September 21st is the first day of Fall. I know we don’t want to think about it yet, but it is good to prepare and get the chimney swept early. Why? According to the Farmer’s Almanac, they are predicting a colder and snowier Winter. But you say, “eh, I got a gas fireplace.” Better yet, “I don’t use my fireplace, so why should I sweep it, and clean it early?” Let’s discuss why all types of chimneys and fireplaces need to be swept.
Why Do All Types of Chimney’s and Fireplaces Need to Be Swept?
When we think of the fireplace, we picture the real wood burning fireplace with the sounds of crackling wood. With regular use of the wood-burning fireplaces, a byproduct called creosote forms and over time, lines the side of the chimney flue. This needs to be swept at least once per year as creosote is flammable. However, all chimney’s, regardless of whether it burns wood or utilizes gas, needs to be professionally inspected and swept annually.
Many homeowners mistakenly believe that a gas or unused chimney is immune to problems since it doesn't produce a byproduct. However, these chimney systems face their own unique dangers. Gas fireplaces, especially those that are high-efficiency, can lead to the buildup of corrosive deposits. Over time, these deposits can degrade your chimney liner. Getting it inspected by a certified chimney technician will control this issue so it doesn’t turn into a problem.
4 Key Reasons to Prioritize Your Annual Chimney Inspection
The annual chimney inspection is more than just a sweep; it’s a comprehensive health check for your entire chimney system. We call it the 14 Point Inspection. A certified chimney technician will look for:
1. Fire Hazards: Again, for wood-burning chimneys, the removal of creosote is important to prevent a chimney fire. Gas fireplaces release corrosive deposits. If you don’t use the fireplace, you never know what debris may have settled in. If you want to use the fireplace, please be sure to have it professionally inspected and swept before use.
2. Obstructions: There’s a whole world outside of your home, and especially in the Fall, our little friends are searching for a warm place to stay. Your chimney looks pretty good. And, let’s not forget how the wind in the Chicagoland are does a great job of moving debris around that can get up and under the chimney cap or directly into the chimney if you don’t have a cap. These blockages need to be cleared for you and your home’s protection.
3. Structural Damage: A chimney technician will be able to spot cracks, water damage, or deterioration of the chimney and chimney liner that could compromise the system's safety.
4. Ventilation Issues: Ventilation is key for your home to breathe. The certified chimney technician will ensure proper draft and airflow, which is the best way to get rid of toxic gases.
NFPA
Remember, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends an annual inspection for all chimney types. This simple, proactive maintenance can save you from costly repairs. Don't wait for a problem to become obvious.

I’m often asked if you should seal a tile before grouting and the answer is a definite yes, and this Encaustic Cement tiled bathroom floor installation in Stockport is a great example as to why. The tiles had not been sealed before grouting and then, once the tiler went to grout the newly installed tiles with a grey grout, the colour ran into the tiles, staining them and leaving them looking grubby and dirty. Had the tiles been sealed it would of made the process of removing the grout from the surface of the tile much easier.
If you haven’t come across them before Encaustic cement tiles are often hand painted and are available in a range of beautifully artistic patterns, so it was a real shame that these tiles were allowed to be spoilt by an avoidable mistake. As you can imagine, the property owner was keen to have the tiles professionally restored, and she contacted me to get the job done. I took some photographs but I’m not sure that they do justice to the problem.
Rather than use a liquid cleaning product, I opted to use diamond encrusted handheld burnishing pads to remove the grout stains. Our burnishing system comprises four pads of varying grits. I started with the Coarse grit burnishing pads applying to the tiles it with a small amount of water as lubricant to grind down the grubby marks. Following this I worked my way through the system, applying Medium, Fine and Very Fine pads to gradually restore the appearance of the floor. Once the burnishing process has been completed I rinsed the tiles and then accelerated the drying process using a heat gun to prepare them to be sealed.
Removing any excess moisture before sealing is essential as even a small amount can cloud the sealer and prevent it from properly protecting the tiles from dirt and stains. Once satisfied that the floor was dry, I proceeded to seal it using Tile Doctor Colour Grow. As an impregnating sealer Colour Grow penetrates deep into the pores of the stone to fill them and thus prevent dirt from becoming ingrained. Colour Grow’s colour intensifying properties also really accentuated the patterns of the Encaustic Cement tiles.
Now that these fantastic tiles have been properly sealed it will be far easier for the customer to keep them clean in future. Needless to say, she was very happy with the result. We recommend topping up your sealer on a regular basis to ensure problems like those which occurred here do not damage the appearance of your tiles.

The tiles shown in the photographs below are classic distressed Black and White Italian Marble installed in the kitchen of a property in Bamber Bridge which is South of Preston. Some of the tiles had an issue with loose grout which I suspect was due to the suspended wooden floor and a small amount of movement had resulted in the grout cracking.
Ideally more support would be needed under the floor to prevent this, in the meantime however I recommended removing the grout and replacing with a flexible grout product that could cope with the movement. The tiles also needed a clean, polish and reseal so it made sense to address the issue with the grout as part of the work.
Working as a two-man team we started by cleaning the floor with a set of diamond burnishing pads starting with a coarse 400-grit, followed by 800 and 1500 grit. Water was used to lubricate the process and the floor was rinsed with water between pads with the fine slurry generated by the process extracted using a wet vacuum. These pads remove ingrained dirt and then slowly refine the appearance of the Marble building up its polished appearance in the process.
The next step was to rake out all the grout which as discussed was compromised and needed replacing. We had to be very careful when removing the grout due to the electric heating mat under the floor, any damage to that would require ripping the floor up. With the old grout removed and the floor cleaned the floor was then grouted using Mapei Ultra-colour which is a flexible and fully waterproof grout more than suitable for this situation.
Between us we managed to pack a lot into day one which was tough, however with the hardest tasks out of the way day two should be a lot easier.
Day two started with an initial clean making sure to remove any excess grout smeared on the surface that can affect the look of the tile if not removed. This was followed by the application of the last of the set of burnishing pads which is a 3,000-grit pad that really brings up the polish on the marble. You only need a small amount of water sprayed onto the floor when applying this last pad so by late morning the floor was dry and ready for sealing. The customer wanted a better sheen appearance than they previously had, fortunately we find the Diamond burnishing pads do this well, they also tighten up the pores of the stone as well which means less sealer is needed.
The floor was then sealed with Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is an impregnating sealer that improves colour and soaks into the stone occupying the pores and thereby preventing dirt from becoming ingrained. Once complete the floor looked great and the client was very happy.
Sealers and Polish do wear down with use over time so before leaving I discussed our annual maintenance plan option which will ensure the appearance of the Marble floor always looks good. The plan involves returning once a year to further polish the floor with a high-grade burnishing pad and to add more sealer if required. We also discussed the use of Tile Doctor Stone Soap for regular cleaning, it is a pH neutral cleaner which is ideal for stone floors like Marble which are acid sensitive.

Using a chainsaw is a quick way to make work of fallen branches, damaged trees, and more. However, unless you have been plenty of experience, you may not be able to use this tool safely. For those who have never used a chainsaw before, it is a good idea to start with a lighter saw to prevent injury. It is also a good idea to enroll in a training course. If you plan to use a chainsaw in a professional company, it is even mandatory. Five Star Tree Services has created a quick guide that will help you decide if using a chainsaw is the best option for you.
Chainsaw Maintenance
Before you start using a chainsaw, you need to know if the blades are properly sharpened. Dull blades can cause jagged cuts or even cause injury. A sharp blade allows the saw to cut smoothly and produce straight cuts. The next step is to review is the cutting chain. It should be adjusted to the right tension, so the chain doesn’t move when the engine is idle. Make sure there are no loose screws and that the chain brake is in proper working order.
Operating a Chainsaw
Once you ensure that the chainsaw is safe to operate, it is time to get it started. Do you know the right amount of throttle and pressure to use? What about which cut would be best for your current project? Each type of cut will affect the wood differently, so it is important to keep these factors in mind when using a chainsaw. Situational awareness is also an important part of chainsaw use. No one should be within 10 feet while you are cutting. Also, avoid getting distracted by people seeking your attention since it only takes a second for a grave mistake to occur.
Protection During Chainsaw Operation
Proper protection is essential when operating machinery. When using a chainsaw, you should have on personal protection equipment such as; chainsaw pants, steel toe boots, gloves, ear protection, high visibility clothing, a helmet, and eye protection. All of these items should be in good working order and made from high-quality materials. Protecting your face, neck, chest, and abdomen is critical when working with any type of cutting tool.
The best way to keep yourself protected while wearing your personal protective equipment (PPE) is to maintain control over the chainsaw. Gloves may reduce control for many people, but a firm stance and proper balance can work wonders for maintaining control. PPE usage is very important, but it is equally important not to get lulled into a false sense of security by wearing it.
Practice Makes Perfect
It is best to practice using your chainsaw before taking on big projects. This will help you learn to move your body and your head in a safe way and a way that supports a clean cut. Most often, work with chainsaws is completed on ground that is uneven or covered in obstacles. Practicing will ensure that you can adapt to your environment without risking damage to your property or bodily harm.

Trees, like people, are living beings that need care, nutrition, and a healthy environment in order to thrive. Although tree death is a normal part of their life cycle, with the right care and proper conditions, they can live for thousands of years. Trees are an important part of our environment, and without them, humanity itself will cease to thrive. Therefore, it is important that we do everything possible to properly care for the trees on our property and in our area to maintain their vitality.
The Benefits of Commercial Tree Care
Here at Five Star Tree Services, we care about the environment and have dedicated our business to pruning, cutting, and maintaining trees and hedges. We offer a wide range of services at a price you can afford. Below, we have put together a shortlist of reasons why you should schedule regular commercial tree care services for your property.
Reduce Liability
A sick tree or a dead branch can cause bodily harm to a person if they happen to be near the tree when it falls. If you own a business, however, there is more to falling branches than the potential for harm or property damage. A customer, employee, or contractor who is hurt by a falling branch or tree on your property has the right to sue. This can cause strain on your business and destroy your good image. Working with a professional Toronto tree care company will ensure that the trees on your property are always healthy and well maintained to prevent accidents.
Healthy Trees
There is no purpose in keeping dead branches on your tree. Not only do they occupy space, but they also sap nutrients that your tree needs to thrive. Dead branches are also a hazard since they can fall down at any time. Depending on the size of the branch, this can cause property damage or injury. Regular tree care by a professional company keeps dead branches to a minimum and provides protection to your family, customers, and property at the same time.
Aesthetics
Everyone likes to look at a nice lawn, colourful garden, and well-maintained trees. For commercial locations, customers are more prone to visit stores and businesses that present a well-kept exterior over those that don’t. Quality is always more important than looks, but in the world of commerce, appearances can spur higher quantities of foot traffic. Additionally, when curb appeal increases, property value increases. This is great if you plan on selling it in the future.
Proper Maintenance
It is easy to ask your employees or your kids to take care of your lawn, but chances are, it is a well-hated chore. Tree care, on the other hand, is not something that should be left up to chance, or handled by those with no experience. When you hire Five Star Tree Services, our team will ensure that the needs of your trees are met and that they are properly maintained. If you are interested in learning more about our services, give us a call at (416) 990-3355 today.
